Does anyone have any experience in going to college overseas or know anyone who has? I'm at the point in my life where I need to make a really important decision. I have given myself two options and one of them would be moving out of the country and going to college. I wish to keep the other option private, so please respect my wish and don't ask.

I spent a year abroad in USA studying and it was a fantastic time, though I did have all my fees paid for by by home university.

My girlfriend (who is American) just spent a year over here in the UK studying and she really enjoyed it. She was also able to get help with funding from her home university.

Studying abroad can be expensive, especially if you'll be funding it without state/federal aid, but I personally believe it would be worth it. I know a lot of people who have studied abroad and they have all loved it. You get to totally immerse yourself in another culture, meet new people, plus if you're heading somewhere like mainland Europe, or even the UK, the opportunity to travel further is fantastic.

I spent 7 weeks studying in Luxembourg last summer. I wish so much now that I would have gone for a year. Do it; it's a great experience.

i did a year abroad program a couple of years ago through my university. its much better to find a course at a university in your home country that has the year abroad integrated into it.

i wouldnt advise becoming an international student for the full length of ur college career because it will be crazy expensive. whereas if u do a year abroad as part of ur course, then u just pay ur normal fees to ur home university.

if u can though..do a year abroad...itll be the best year of your life

Anyone know if they're strict about minimum gpa stuff? I fucked up my first few semesters for various reasons but now that I'm back on track, I'm a little worried that I'll have problems studying abroad in the spring of '09.

it depends on what school you go. Some schools if you got the money then you got the time. Some are strictly Gpa requirements have to be met.

I'm going to Beijing for the next academic year. I can't wait.

As for funding, there are a bunch of scholarships and such available, depending on where you're going. I don't know of too many off hand, but if you're going to Germany, check out daad.org, and if you're going to anywhere in Asia, http://www.iie.org/programs/Freeman-ASIA/ may be of some use.

At my school you have to have a minimum 3.0 - but, they make an exception if your last 3 semesters have been over that. I just got my GPA up to that 3 - so, I was quite excited. I'm hoping to spend Spring 08' in England.

I spent six months in Scotland and it was the best semester of my college career. I'm trying to go back for grad school. Tuition is so much less there than it is here ($16,000 tuition for grad school and I'd have my Masters in a year).

If you're worried about funds, check to see if you can get employment as a student. I know in the UK you can work 20 hours a week as long as you're a full-time student.

I was thinking about doing this, is it good to do it during high school? There's a program going to London for a few months doing Film. I plan on doing Film in college, so would this be good for me? I'm entering my Junior year in high school right now.

exchanges are fun but it can be frustrating at times if you dont understand their language.

I never did a study abroad program (although I did visit England over the summer, and it was amazing), but I know plenty of people who have. I wish I had considering my college doesn't have the most exciting campus. If you are interested in going to school out of the country, I highly recommend it since immersing yourself in another culture gives you the opportunity to meet different people and explore new places.

Thats a little much for just spring break. Go here (http://www.isecard.com/) , and this should help out with like discounts and all that jazz. I'm using it to go to France in the summer, needless to say I'M FUCKING EXCITED! I hope i helped out a little. Good luck with your trip.

Um, I'd like to do this probably at some point. I think I'd be worried about missing everyone back home, though. Can someone explain why it would be the best semester/year of their lives? I mean, Europe is fuckin great, but when I did it for two weeks I was doing it with people I loved and loved enjoying it with. By myself, with those people back home, I can't help but think I'd be missing home.

I went to London for a semester and it was the best experience of my life. To me, the timing was perfect. I was in college, wanted an adventure and was looking for an experience I wouldn't forget. I met a lot of cool people, saw a lot of awesome things and gained a completely new perspective on life. I would say that you get what you put into it. There were people on the trip that couldn't adjust to not having the comforts of back home. Other people loved the fact that they were a "fish out of water" so to speak. There were a couple of people who went on the trip together (bro/sis, bf/gf) and they tended to stick together. The rest of the group didn't know anyone, so we were forced to break out of our shell more than the people who were paired up.

Well, the biggest reason other than money preventing me from doing this would be that if I did it, it would HAVE to be during the summer. My schedule is too packed with stuff to take a semester to go play in Italy and not take 15 or 17 credits. The summer is the only time, at least for more than a month, that I can see my girl, who does not go to the same school as I do. That makes it harder for us to plan it out, because we'd be in different programs, etc. Obviously it's premature for me to be a) assuming I'll do it and b) assuming we'll still be together, but if this were to happen this upcoming summer, I'd probably have a hard time. I don't know, I'm dumb.

True. But it's not too early assume anything because you know it's gonna take some time to plan it. And about the money thing, if you go through your university or what ever you can still go abroad and just pay the regular tuition. And about your girl, with all do respect ofcourse, don't not go just because her. That would be a giant mistake.

Yeah, London was pretty cool, kinda got boring after a while though. The whole study abroad experience was great. I had a lot of fun, and all of the friends I made there are my best friends now. I don't know anyone who's ever had a bad time studying abroad.

Does your school have an agreement with theirs? Like my college had an agreement that we could study abroad at certain universities and the credits would transfer no problem, and the same with study abroad students coming to the US. It's the only way I could see students coming to the college's horrible, horrible city. Hell, Americans didn't even know why they went to the school haha.

They have a whole bunch of pay as go phones over there. I went to, I think, carphone warehouse and got like a 5 pound cell phone. Then they put a SIM card in it, which you use until it runs out of money and then you can just top it up again.

I'm thinking about Sunderland in two years because that's the school affiliated with my school that has the only Journalism program. So you would recommend England? Did you travel out of the country a lot or at all? Did you go for a semester or a year? I'm thinking about a year but I have no idea if I could handle being away from my family for that long, even though now I'm typically spending 4 months at college without seeing any family because of the distance from home. It might be kind of personal but did you have a hard time being away from family for that long? Was it easy for you to get to meet and get to know people?

I would ABSOLUTELY recommend England. It's one of the few places in Europe where you don't have to learn another language, which makes day to day life a lot easier. As it is there are a lot of adjustments. I only spent a semester there, and I was torn between being ready to leave and never wanting to leave. It's the little differences in life - not being able to drive to the supermarket (if you are in a city), constantly traveling (which is fun, but exhausting), missing a lot of the foods you love at home, having to find odd times to get in touch with people from home because of the time-difference, not being able to shoot out a text to someone from home, ect. I too went to college kind of far away and wouldn't go home more than once a semester. As a kid I would go away for a month to sleepaway camp. So I was used to being away from family. I missed them, but, not so much that I couldn't handle it. As for friends, I wound up making amazing friends, although they were all American. I came through a program, so we all arrived early for an orientation week and that was how I met them. I'm honestly not sure how I would have made friends if I didn't come through the program though.

As for travel, I went to Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid and Seville and Wales. Since you still actually do have classes, you can't always travel on weekends and there was so much ot do in London anyway. I did blow my opportunity to travel over hte month long spring break though.

Another semi-personal question here...What was the financial aid situation like? I've read that they take into consideration that you are studying abroad and therefore give you more money. I'm not sure if I would want to live off-campus or in dorms, what did you do? I don't know if they don't give you as much money if you have non-campus housing...? Did you get a lot of scholarships? Were there scholarships based on more than just GPA?

I'd love to take an extra Study Abroad program in addition to the dual degree program that I am already doing. Financing it is my main question here - anyone would like to share their experiences?

My school charges you the same amount that I would otherwise pay. There were the additional expenses of flying, traveling, life being a bit more expensive. But, I dont think my financial aid changed. I'm not sure though. It varies by school, as do scholarships. As for living, i lived on campus, which again, was one of the benefits of going through a program. They handled all the housing stuff, because lord knows finding a place in Europe would be difficult. I'd strongly recommend it. I went through Butler university. They charge a bit more, but handle all the little stuff, organize weekend trips, are there for you if you ever have an issue, and it's how you can make friends.

She's supposed to fly out of Milwaukee, after that horrible storm.

So, I brought up going abroad to my mom, and she was replied, "okay.." I took it as if she doesn't believe I'm going to do it. Keep in mind, my mom is a huge travel person. I think she doesn't know how easy it is to go abroad. My plan is to do it when I transfer in about a year.

The reason why I'm bringing this up, is how did your parents take it, when you told them you were going abroad?

I showed her the cost of the program I was looking at and she said "Okay, I have no problem with you going."

I was actually pretty surprised.

When I told my parents I wanted to study abroad, they were thrilled. They never got to do much traveling and really wanted me to do it since I'd probably never have the chance to do something like that again.

I am planning on doing a study abroad program in Japan for Spring 2012. Really excited and hope I get accepted to do so.

Since Japan does their terms far differently than here in Canada, it would be from the very beginning of April until mid-August 2012.

I spent 7 weeks studying in Luxembourg last summer. I wish so much now that I would have gone for a year. Do it; it's a great experience.

How was Luxembourg? Tell me all about it. I'm studying abroad there for two weeks at the end of May.

Are you staying/studying in the city or somewhere else? I was in Differdange, which is a really neat little town, but went to the city fairly often. I loved Lux; it's located centrally enough that it's easy to travel, say, on weekends (I went to London, Rome, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Berlin), but it's got a lot of nice local attractions as well (wineries on the Moselle, castles in the northern part of the country, WWII cemetery where Patton is buried, some cool little French/German towns--Metz and Trier, respectively--right over the borders, etc.). Let me know where you're staying and I'll give you some local-specific things to check out.

Thanks for all the info so far. We're staying in the Grund most of the time then we're staying on a vineyard in Remich the last weekend. The first weekend we are going on an overnight trip to Brussels. The first night we're having a welcome dinner at Porta Nova (Glacis). Some of the other things we're doing: meeting with other US students in Differdange, company visit to the European Investment Bank, trip to Vianden, trip to Metz, company visit to the Skype headquarters, company visit to the Banque Centrale de Luxembourg, trip to Trier, company visit to Paypal/Amazon, visit to the European Court of Justice and a boat trip on the Moselle River. I don't know if I'll be able to visit other countries during the two weeks, so I might stay and travel around after June 12th. What is the best method of travelling around Europe?

What university is it through? Sounds like a lot of the same stuff we did (Vianden, boat trip on the Moselle). The students you're meeting in Diff are (probably) business students from our program (Miami University's MUDEC program).

The Grund is great if you're staying in the city; it's where most of the nightlife is. Within the city, you can walk most places, or take the bus. Outside of that, we traveled by train most of the time, and I highly recommend it. I got a Eurail Pass (http://www.eurail.com/eurail-passes), which worked out really nicely (you have to get it in advance in the states). It'll get you pretty much everywhere within the EU (I had to buy tickets separately to take the chunnel to London) and brings you right into the heart of most cities. We also flew to Rome via RyanAir, which was...interesting. No-frills, budget airline with some weird stipulations about check-ins and the like (and a REALLY early flight back that had us spending the night before in the Rome airport), but it got us there and back in one piece.

Oh, and if you don't know French, learn some key phrases in French. That's what everyone defaults to when there are language barriers.

I go to Sacred Heart University in CT. Our trip coordinator said we'd be going to a castle that is owned by Miami U of Ohio. I was actually looking at the Eurail Pass last night and seeing the different country passes they had. I would at least like to go to Paris and one of the major cities in Germany.

That'd be the Château de Differdange. I love that place. Grab dinner at San Marino (right down the hill) if you get the chance.

No problem.

Um...bring me a Bofferding glass? I broke one of mine while doing dishes the other day haha (it's one of their two major breweries--the other being Diekirch--you'll see signs all over the place). Really though, just enjoy it. It's a great country.

And I'm always up for answering questions about it, so yeah, feel free to quote, PM, whatever.

England's tuition fees are hitting a record high in 2012. To add salt to the wound, jobs are relatively scarce as well in the country. However, professionals (Doctors, Judges) still have employment available.

I personally don't think it is; I try to be super optimistic with the possibility of studying somewhere else. If you have the chance to go for a full year and have the funding/scholarship/financial aid then go for it.
