I decided to make a discussion thread on this film, seeing as how it is one of my favorite movies.

Discuss.

i'll say what probably everybody else will. dynamite direction, incredible set pieces/costumes, and one hell of a villain. the feel for time and place was immaculate

maybe it would be more interesting if i listed the things i didn't like about it.

-i thought cameron diaz was woefully miscast
-leonardo dicaprio in one of his least appealing performances. i just felt he was so stiff throughout the whole movie. did not hold well at all next to DDL
-the conclusion was so dissapointing, and that the whole movie culminated to an ending that felt tacked on and rushed. just my opinion though...

I agree with these two, especially the first. They could've cast someone so much better but with that aside I still adore this movie.

I see that now, haha. When I opened the thread I just skimmed the first few responses and only saw praise for the movie.

DDL was born to play roles like that, he should play Hank Rearden in Atlas Shrugged if it ever gets made. But i agree with the ending being rushed, I thought it was a great movie up until that point. a bit of a let down at the end.

I need to watch this again its been way to long. Yea Diaz was the only complaint I had they could of done way better casting than that. John C Reilly was a bad ass in this movie

Cameron Diaz is miscast in this picture, but everyone else is perfect - especially Daniel Day-Lewis and John C. Reilly.

I like this movie more and more every time I watch it ... kind of want to put it on now.

I'd agree with your first two points, but I really enjoyed the ending. The idea that the Lewis-DiCaprio (yes I can't remember their characters' names) conflict was almost meaningless compared to the larger factors at work really made this movie great in my opinion. Though I can see why people dislike it, its almost a cop out.

DDL is Bill "The Butcher," and DiCaprio is Amsterdam Vallon

Bill the Butcher is a fucking psychopath, I love it.
He's so intense. There is seriously no one else who could've done that role justice like Daniel Day Lewis did. Not a one.

I think I'd agree with all of that. Not a bad movie, but not up to the very highest standards that Scorsese has set himself.

Departed is solid, I just like Gangs more.

I hope that for the rest of his career, Scorsese uses DiCaprio in every film he does.

Haha, I was just reading the argument people got into over Jarhead in the Revolutionary Road thread. I enjoyed Jarhead for what it's worth and still love the ending. Road to Perdition will always be my favorite though, I think.

Did they trash Jarhead? It was one that grew one me more and more. After I saw it, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

American Beauty is wonderful and so is Perdition. I love Perdition because the shots look like still paintings. There isn't a ton of movement or anything. I need to watch that again.

Well it was mostly just one guy trashing it (he really seemed to dislike that movie and Sam Mendes himself to a degree):

American Beauty = Good, but overrated.
Road To Perdition = Average.
Jarhead = Bad.

Considering the amount of praise this man gets (people act like he's perfect) I just think he's quite overrated.

Excited, despite the fact Mendes is arguably the most overrated director working today.

don't get me wrong, i'm not a fanboy.

american beauty had it's moments, but i think it was extremely overrated. jarhead was bad, but i think it's problems were more with the script than the direction. road to perdition i thought was fucking excellent though.

i just don't think he's anywhere near the most overrated director working. he's slightly overrated at best. my only point is that there are a shit ton less talented directors that get the praise he gets.

Seriously? I'd go so far as to say Jarhead wasn't just bad, it was awful.

My favorite shot in Road to Perdition is still when Daniel Craig blows that puff of smoke from his mouth. Conrad L. Hall was a brilliant cinematographer.

Ohhh, TJ. Should have known. I remember him saying how overrated Mendes is.

TJ also went and paid to see The House Bunny so I don't know if we can take him too seriously. ;-)

I always forget Craig is in Perdition. Need to watch it now! Got me excited.

Haha, I seem to get that same reaction whenever I bring up Craig's role in Road to Perdition. Everybody always tells me, "oh yeah, I forgot he was in that." I feel like, to me, that was his breakout role. I know other people say Layercake, but I feel like Perdition really grabbed people's attention.

lol at House Bunny. TJ seems like a cool guy, but I think I side with you on the Jarhead argument haha.

Yeah, Craig was a real bastard in Perdition. I always forget Jude Law is in it too! Wow. It's all coming back. I just think of Tom Hanks and Mendes.

I haven't seen Layer Cake yet either. Any good?

And TJ is cool, but I personally just can't figure out how Jarhead is an "awful" movie.

I think that Daniel Day-Lewis makes Gangs of New York a great movie. The man is simply incredible. Cameron Diaz, on the other hand, should have choosen a different profession.

I think Road to Perdition and American Beauty are both amazing. I think Jarhead is decent. I think the direction and acting are great but I really wanted the plot to go somewhere else (meaning I wanted to see Gyllenhall fuck some people up). But then again, isn't that the point of the movie? For the most part, all of the soldiers over there are just waiting for something exiting to happen and we kind of get to experience that

Jude Law plays a real creep with a disfigured face and Craig plays a real bastard.....man I love that movie.

Layer Cake (I knew I messed up the spelling of the title in my last post) was great. Shocking ending with an intricate plot leading up to it and some great acting thus making it understandable why some would point to it as his breakout role (despite my argument for Road to Perdition). I know people compare it to Lock, Stock which is a mildly fair comparison but I would go as far as to say that Layer Cake actually paces itself a little better.

I read several negative reviews of Jarhead but I never really agreed with them so I don't know that I get it either.

I'm gonna be honest, I haven't seen it since the day it was released, and I think it's my general dislike of Jamie Foxx that is keeping me from revisiting it. I can already say, however, that after watching that Rev. Road trailer several times, it's almost definitely going to be my fav Mendes movie by a MILE.

I think thats one of the big reasons why I liked it so much. You expect a certain thing in these types of films but you don't get that with Jarhead. Plus it was just how that atmosphere makes a person goes insane.
