I don't understand why everyone find's it so important to "label" bands. I know I have before, but it does get kinda old. Like when people ask me what I listen to I try to stay away from saying "punk" because what is punk? Some people would say The Clash, or some band like Crass .. and then you say Matchbook Romance is? And all that emo-rock, emo-punk .. I don't know, I think it gets way out of hand. So when people ask I either say "I don't know," or "underground music," even though most of it may not be. Or usually I'll say harder stuff, and if they think Disturbed or Slipknot is what I mean by hard, then I just simply ignore them. So yeah, labeling is just as cool as calling people/bands posuers and sell outs. It's to cliched and way over used. So what do you all think..

I think labelling causes a lot of prejudging of various groups, but it IS necessary to a point. For example, if someone who likes ska asked you to describe a group like Poison The Well, I doubt you would say, "Well, they sound like music."
You would need to label them, somewhat, in order to describe their style a little more.

I love it, probably because I'm a person that likes being organized and statistical things like genres are heavy on organization.

it's annoying to me when people basically hate a whole certain genre and won't give bands a chance because they have characteristics shared with other bands, but i generally like music that's harder to label.... when i worked for a promotion company listening to demos, i had to list what type of music each demo was and sometimes that was like the easiest thing in the world just to write down "pop-punk" but i found the best demos were from bands i had to put a million keywords down to describe them

Yeah, I know what you mean. But I was just trying to stay away from labeling bands as emo, or pop-punk .. becasue I didn't think punk was supposed to be popular in the first place, so why would you add the pop part? I dono, I just don't understand I suppose.

be glad you don't live in texas, i mean i love texas, just everyone here and their cheatin husbands old hound dog listens to country
You need to label bands if you're a reviewer or something like that. It also comes in handy when describing a band to someone. It would be better if people would stop throwing bands into genres they don't belong in, but oh well. Calling Matchbook Romance emo is like calling Slayer latin jazz.

punk isn't popular, pop-punk is, therefore the pop part.
punk isn't popular, pop-punk is, therefore the pop part.
Pop doesn't really mean popular in this case, just that the muisic is lighter and "poppier." Most of the so called pop punk bands out there now are closer to plain old pop than anything else.

I hate labels... because there will always be some one who won't agree with you when you're labelling a band.
I think everyone labels the music they listen to in different ways. I don't know...I mean.. I may say I think Finch are emo for example, but some one else will say that they're screamo or whatever.... you know what I mean?
And .... I don't get the label "pop-punk", because I have always thought that pop is everything that punk is not?
I just think its a stupid label.

It isn't all rock. I don't know. Labels change. That's what I don't like about them. Punk in the '80's is a whole lot different than punk now, or, say, punk in the 50's. If they used the word punk in the 50's.
Pop-punk is a really bad word. Emo, too. Ack. Alright. Labels are necessary, though.

I love it, probably because I'm a person that likes being organized and statistical things like genres are heavy on organization.I agree with you big time. It's just the type of person I am. I've always organized things that I love. All my life, whether it was a shelf of my favorite videos, my Star Wars action figures, and nowadays, my musical genres. The rest of my room would be a mess, but if you would look at my collection of Oz books, or ANYTHING else that I loved, they'd be perfectly lined up on my shelf in chronological order. That's why I do it with music.
its easy when people ask just say, bands you wouldnt like or probably have never heard of. then they usually just go about their businessWhat if I want them to like it?
I hate country music. I HATE country music. I totally agree with you on that one, that genre is just so crappy. There are no exceptions to that at all.Now that's just narrow-minded. You haven't heard all country, so you can't say that. I can understand if you generally don't like it stylistically, you're not required to listen to it, but you shouldn't make broad statements like that. I have no desire to listen to country, just as I have no desire to listen to rap, and lots of genres, but I wouldn't make such a harsh generalization.
Pop doesn't really mean popular in this case, just that the muisic is lighter and "poppier." Most of the so called pop punk bands out there now are closer to plain old pop than anything else.I'm not sure if I'm right, but my belief is that "pop" has nothing to do with popularity, sound, or musical style. My belief is that if the lyrics are about love, relationships, girls, heartache, etc, it can be considered "pop". Therefore the original political punk = not pop. Today's punk about girls and broken-heartedness = pop... or... (get this) "POP-PUNK". (ooh!)

If they used the word punk in the 50's.According to MSN Encarta Online, pretty much ALL music of the latter half of the Twentieth Century somehow evolved from "Rock". That's right, Rap, Hip-Hop, Metal, Disco, Gospel, even Mainstream Pop evolved from the 1950's Rock pioneers, such as Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. And I believe that the word "Punk" HAS been around for that long, however it used to be a noun meaning "hoodlum", long before it was ever applied to music as early as the mid-seventies.

so if i write a polka song about love and heartache, it's actually a pop song?

Yes, I believe so. It would be "polka-pop", or "pop-polka", or maybe even just "polka" for short.
What are polka lyrics usually about? Do they even have lyrics? I'm not sure I've actually heard polka before, I just know that it involves accordians and funny green hats with feathers. Actually I know what a polka waltz sounds like, such as the "Thunder and Lightning Polka" by Johann Strauss, but that certainly doesn't have lyrics.
