I need to lay down demo drums for some songs I'm writing (think Offspring-ish). What's the program you recommend? Price doesn't matter, it just needs to be something I can write drums with that's good.. I'll eventually be using them in Cakewalk Sonar7, but that doesn't matter.

I want a DRUM MAKER (software to make drums) not something to record real drums :)

thanks!

BFD is the best I've heard.

I agree on BFD. Also Check out Addictive Drums: http://www.xlnaudio.com/

How much are those programs? I've been looking for something to make decently realistic sounding drums with, but my problem is I only have a budget of free.

Right now I'm using the Proteus VX that came bundled with my interface and Cubase. It only really has one decent sounding kit.

Addictive Drums is $250
Reason and BFD are both $400

Reason includes more synths and other modules, not just drums.

BFD is great for drums, but with some skill in reason you can get great results too, especially with the Reason Drums expansion kit.
Never tried Addictive Drums, but if it's cheaper, awesome.
Also, if you're going to buy some software and you're a student, go to academicsuperstore.com, i got a great deal on Reason- academic pricing is amazing.

An E-MU interface actually, but I believe the Cubase bundle is the same. Why do you ask?

oh you meant midi interface? I miss interpreted, i thought it was just a general recording interface, i was thinking of getting the presonus firestudio and it comes with cubase 4.

No, I got an E-MU 0202 usb audio interface.

You sure that the Firestudio comes with Cubase 4 and not Cubase 4 LE? Mine is Cubase LE, Cubase 4 wasn't out yet. Cubase 4 looks really nice though.

oh e-mu makes usb interfaces? i wasn't aware. It might come with LE but i need to check back on that, what's the difference between the two?

I just tried using Session Drummer 2, as it came with Sonar7 -- it's so unnecessarily difficult, I want to go nuts. I just want to be able to easily write my own drum parts for rock songs, preferably through VST. Does BFD fit that need, do you think?

I can play drums, I just can't realistically record them in my small apartment, like I can with bass/guitar/vocals.. so I know how to write drums, but the overly complicated software is a pain in the ass. It seems it's all MIDI (unnecessary) and very trance/beat-related, not rock related.

Acoustica Beatcraft (http://acoustica.com/beatcraft/screenshots.htm) is very, very simple (and powerful).. take a look if you haven't seen it. It basically allows simple switches (like writing a drum tab) on a full kit. Unfortunately, it's not VST, which is a real bitch. Also, the kits sound like ass.

Any recs?

The Cubase LE I have is a light edition of Cubase 3. It's just an edition with fewer features that they usually bundle with hardware stuff. Still works just as well.

Beatcraft isn't bad, I've been using that. I'm sure it's pretty cheap to buy as well.
