There we go again, throwing around the r word. That's going to be the story of this election, whether or not the situation calls for it. Also, applying it to such frivolous situation as this will take away from when someone truly makes a racist remark later on.

Simply because African-Americans play to the racial stereotypes or make jokes about them does not mean those stereotypes are less racist. Incidentally, I'd like to know what a "truly racist remark" is, because if one is waiting for more blatant attacks on race, then they're going to miss the coded language that is so often used when speaking about minorities.

On a serious note, though I don't think it was exactly racist, but it was definitely inappropriate. I don't want to sound like I am defending Fox News, but I do know Fox News is not the only news channel that has had inappropriate headlines. Sometimes, I feel like they do it on purpose now. People who hate Fox news seem to watch it more than the people who don't.

this isn't true at all. If someone like Glenn Beck said this on CNN or Micheal Savage did on his radio show, there'd still be a mess. This isn't being "blown out of porportion at all" because it's disrespectful purely based on race. You're not seeing any slanders against McCain's wife.

It was unprofessional for sure. If we want to get into race though... at the risk of sounding pretty damn trashy myself, I've watched a lot of Maury in the past year or two and the term "baby mama" is thrown around by numerous races. Urban Dictionary also doesn't mention race at all in any one of their seven user-submitted definitions.

I don't know, I didn't read that and think of a specific race. That's just me though.

It's possible. I had no idea that Michelle had said that before Fox used it, but I guess "baby mama" has no race-specific connotations to me. I just read it and figured that, in our terrible mainstream-news world where the most important aspect is the eye-catching headline, they were just using rhyming to help viewers remember that headline.

I don't know if that makes me non-racist or naive... haha.

Two out of the three definitions are pretty offensive to an educated, married woman. While anyone could type anything there, I would say that considering it's slang and most of the definitions on the site for the term agree with the way i'm claiming its used, that it's a fair argument for me to be making. The fact that people typed this definition shows it has this connotation.

Why does everything have to be racially motivated when dealing with minorities? It can't possibly be a news source using her own words as a caption? News companies do that all the time. Capitalize on politicians faux paxs and turn them into their headlines.. I wasn't aware that "baby mama" only applied to black people. Maybe someone should have told Tina Fey that..

Who would refer to themselves as a slut, even as a joke. Certainly not a politician, or their wife. Come up with a reasonable example. However, It's Michelle Obama's fault for exposing herself to that. Why put yourself in that position.

While not Fox related, I thought I'd share another clip of the lovely racism our country continues to spout, and the lack of coverage it receives...

At a Republican convention they sold this pin....

That's low, although the "Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Deportation" one is just as bad. At least the Texas Republican Party's not letting the vendor who sold the racist Obama pin sell at any more of their events.

agreed, but it's still disturbing. you'd think they would have seen this and automatically kicked them out. i mean really.

Not saying it is, but it's definitely witty. I'm not approving of it at all, just like that Obama Monkey.
You consider that witty?

I could've thought that up when I was in kindergarten.

Embracing one's race and playing the "race card" are not the same thing.

He didn't have to talk to an all black church about fatherhood... there are plenty of terrible white fathers that haven't been around...

Who would refer to themselves as a slut, even as a joke. Certainly not a politician, or their wife. Come up with a reasonable example.

so the crux of your argument is "well you can't come up with an example that *I* think would happen, so you're wrong." That's kind of asinine, especially since i never thought she would refer to Obama as her baby's daddy.

However, It's Michelle Obama's fault for exposing herself to that. Why put yourself in that position.

Ah yes, blame the victim. That's the logical route to take.

It's really FNC's fault because they're reporting this for no real reason other than to make her look bad. I mean how newsworthy is this little phrase? Does her referring to him like that give some vital insight into how he's going to handle the Israeli-Palestinian crisis? Does him being a baby's daddy make him pro-national healthcare? i don't get it.

And sure, Fox may not be showing the utmost respect towards Obama. But how many news outlets have done the same to the Republicans. You can't have it both ways.

there's actually a big difference here because the media still uses kid gloves on Bush/republicans. When Bush misspeaks and says something stupid (instead of when he says dumb things on purpose), you don't see people using his words in headlines like this. The only people that are really picking up on his mispeaking are places like the Daily show, which aren't really news.

but even if i'm wrong here, there's infinitely more respect given to Republicans by the media since the media isn't fucking attacking their wives. They attacked Teresa Kerry in 04. They attacked Hillary Clinton during the Clinton presidency and now they're attacking Michelle Obama. How often has the media been critical of Laura Bush? Or Cindy McCain? I'm sure we could find things that they could be criticizing them about, but they aren't doing it.

but why does everything have to be an issue of race? It just can't simply be a reference to something she said? I don't get why everything has to ultimately come back to race? It's this thought that everything has some ulterior "racist" motive that is stopping America from moving beyond it. Just look at Al Sharpton.

oh come on. this is fox news, they've been peddling racism for years, and have already made racist attacks against obama like the "terrorist fist bump". Maybe if it were another news organization doing this, i wouldn't be as inclined to think it was racist (still i poor taste), but this is like hearing a Klansman say the n-word and you replying "he's not being racist, he's just rapping".

but in all seriousness, the reason this is racially motivated is FNC was using ghetto slang and pointing out that Michelle Obama used it to casually remind viewers that she's black, and fit her into a stereotype that she obviously doesn't fit in.

I don't see how anyone can "play the race card" since every time anyone talks about racism anyway, it becomes an uphill battle to prove one isn't playing the race card.

They love a lot of people. They love people that always seem to give their best effort. People used to hat Burrell, but they like his emotions now. They love Chase Utley. They love Brian Dawkins. They love Westbrook. They love every Flyer not named Lasse Kukkonen or Jim Dowd. They just care about 100% effort, you give it and we can see it, you'll be cheered.

People are behind Westbrook bitching about his contract. In fact, there are some Philly fans who'd prefer to have Owens over McNabb if they had to chose.

McNabb has been real mouthy and has continuously talked shit on Philly.

Yeah, that's the funny thing and Philly players have begun to understand. We boo the result, not necessarily the person. It's just some guys always make a bad result.

McNabb isn't booed, but he isn't loved. Largely because he's always hurt and opens his mouth a lot to try and stir the pot.

Ok I don't post on here a lot, but that is not even close to the same thing. Here is a recap of the events:

Michelle Obama introduces her husband as her baby's daddy.
FoxNews then makes a joke that is not all that funny about THE WORDS SHE SAID.
A group of people want to cry racism.

I can see why that would be considered racism though. I mean why would anyone anywhere do such a horrible thing as make a joke about what someone else has said? She is black so it makes it especially bad! Those silly racists at FoxNews, how dare they!!

You obviously don't post here since you don't know what you're talking about. This is some weak ass analysis of what transpired in this thread.

What happened here was this: someone made the point that FNC was merely reporting on Michelle Obama's missteps (in this case, calling Obama her baby's daddy). I pointed out that this probably wouldn't happen if something came out that made Cindy McCain look bad. Here's a major Cindy McCain missstep (stealing drugs meant for the third world is a pretty big deal).

We're not seeing Fox News call Cindy McCain a drug addict, which proves my point. You're getting caught up in the details and missing the main point. Much like you can make the claim that Michelle Obama ACTUALLY SAID those words, I can make the claim that Cindy McCain ACTUALLY WAS a drug addict. So why isn't fox addressing her as such?

I can see why that would be considered racism though. I mean why would anyone anywhere do such a horrible thing as make a joke about what someone else has said? She is black so it makes it especially bad! Those silly racists at FoxNews, how dare they!!

It's a racist joke, especially when you consider the other racist things Fox News says and does about the Obama family, like claim they're Muslim (with the assumption that being Muslim is bad) or the terrorist fist bump thing. Like i said before, we can't really give fox the benefit of the doubt here given its track record.

could one argue the point that Fox was just trying to sound cool? Using slang from a decade ago, trying to lure in all you youngsters?

Fox is like the old man trying to connect to his son. They buy a leather jacket, spike their hair with gel, attempt to like hardcore music and pull their dicks out to show your 15 year old girlfriend. No matter what they do, they wont be cool. They will only embarrass you, but nonetheless, they are still your father.

Sorry, colloquial Arabic took over. Yeah, I can't stand the woman though, I just can't describe how frustrating it is to hear her bat-shit crazy opinions.
