None More Black - Loud About Loathing
Record Label: Sabot Productions
Release Date: November 8, 2004
Who?
A Philadelphia-based melodic punk band that existed from 2001 to 2007, None More Black was formed after the break-up of frontman Jason Shevchuk’s former group, Kid Dynamite.
How is it?
With their debut LP, File Under Black, None More Black seemed to be carrying on the hardcore punk sound of Kid Dynamite, but with a little more melody, and catchier guitar riffs (not to mention noticeably longer songs). However, with this EP, they began moving ever closer to a decidedly hookier sound, as evidenced by the lead-off track, “Oh, There’s Legwork.” It’s a powerful opener, and kicks off the EP wonderfully, ranking as one of the band’s best cuts. However, it may have been a bit too strong, as it is the most outstanding track here, thusly making the songs that follow seem a bit weaker by comparison upon initial listens.
That being said, after repeated spins, the rest of the songs do being to stand out on their own, specifically “Traffic Is A Global Word”, a bouncy, rollicking song that showcases the band’s impressive rhythm section, and even features whistling, something most bands wouldn’t be able to pull off without sounding tacky or contrived. Yet, it fits the song perfectly; it’s little bits of flavor and experimentation like this that show off the band’s character and unique take on punk rock. And the other four songs, from the snarling “Peace On Mars, ‘Cause You Ain’t Gonna Get It Here” to the jangly "I’ll Buy You The Fucking Single", aren't too shabby either.
While not the highlight of the band's career, Loud About Loathing does a fantastic job of presenting None More Black's potential, a potential that would become much more evident with their next full length, This Is Satire.
The Lawrence Arms; Kid Dynamite; Smoke or Fire; punk rock that isn't afraid to experiment
