Every riff written after about 1974 was already written by Tony Iommi.

The Beatles. Look at the combination of their critical acclaim, influence, sales, hits, experimentation, etc. No one even comes close.

And how can you say their music is dated? They are the number 2 biggest selling artist on the soundscan era (1991-current). Millions and millions of people will disagree with them being dated. Their music is timeless.

Black Sabbath is the best band to ever play music. They made the best music EVER. Their music is better than that of the Beatles. That is my point. I don't really care if some 16 or 17 year old has never heard their albums-- that's their loss.

Black Sabbath's influence is enormous. Every single "rock" (metal, hardcore/punk, etc.) band formed after about 1970 or 1971 owes something to Sabbath.

EDIT: Even the Beastie Boys sampled Sabbath.

Yes. Most of the people on the site only listen to the bands that are promoted on this site and their influences. It's going to be difficult to find more than 5 or 10 people on here who love stoner metal, for example. As much as people like to think this is a messageboard where people talk about all types of music, it's not.

When HellFest was canceled a few years ago and a secret show in NJ was announced for that Sunday, most people on this site thought it was going to be Taking Back Sunday or Brand New. It was obviously going to be Lifetime. Now, everyone on here loves Lifetime. Don't kid yourself.

But I don't think that has anything to do with the website or the posters as a group. It is because the majority of people on this site are in high school or younger. I am not knocking on them, but it's just an age thing. I think tastes broaden as you get older. And I still don't think your point works because there are bands outside of the focus of this website that most everyone knows a bunch of songs from and enjoys listening too. So that's your preference, dude. Christ. To sit here and argue about who's better, and all you have to come up with is "the riffs are siiiiiick." Yeah, fuck that. That's not what makes music better. If you enjoy them for their heaviness, cool.

I, of course, would go with Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is superior to Iommi, truth. Zeppelin were more inventive, and a hell of a lot more creative. Lyrically it's not even a question. Sabbath is good, and they were influential, but there's a lot more artists/bands that were much better, and much more essential.

Black Sabbath isn't as accessible as the Beatles. Bands that get posted on here cite everyone from Elvis Costello to Radiohead as influences. Few cite Black Sabbath. That's all I was trying to say.

-They aren't the most creative

I love Sabbath and have alot of their albums. I still know that it's really not even that close of a race between The Beatles and Sabbath as the best band ever. On any metal websites they may say Sabbath is the greatest band ever, but any well rounded music person knows that no one touches The Beatles.

Although, I know Rolling Stone Magazine is not the end all, be all of music critics, they list The Beatles as the greatest artist of all time and Black Sabbath number 85. I think Sabbath should be higher than that, but no higher than number 20.

I wasn't even trying to get into an argument either. The Beatles and Sabbath = apples and oranges. So many people in here are so self righteous.

For those who have not heard Sabbath aside from "Iron Man" (which is nowhere near Sabbath's best song), check out these albums in their ENTIRETY:

Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Master of Reality
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Vol. 4
Sabotage.

You'll thank me later.

oh yes!

This thread is full of self righteous 16 year olds. Get over yourselves and your opinions.

I think Sabbath is the best band of all time. Was it a bit hyperbolic of me to say that in a thread? Yeah, sure. Do I care? Absolutely not.

no worries. wasn't trying to slight your opinion. at least you made a credible claim as opposed to say uh.... paramore.

I was an idiot about music when I was 16. So is everyone else. You'd be surprised how much your taste will change.

EDIT: and you actually have good taste in bands. You've proven me wrong.

Was Ozzy the one who peed on the alamo? I can't remember who it was. Anyways, I enjoy Black Sabbath. I'm not a fan of the song Iron Man though.

Yes, it was him.

Also, Iron Man is a fucking stupid song. But Sabbath still have some pretty swt tunes, that one put aside.

One of my favorites. Master of Reality and Vol. 4 are my favorite albums from them. All of their first 5 are excellent though. Some of the albums with Dio are good too though. I love Mob Rules.

Give it the fuck up already. They're not the greatest. The Beatles are, and I'm not a fan. I've listened to Black Sabbath's Self Titled, Paranoid, and Master Of Reality multiple times. They were all just okay. They can't touch The Beatles in innovation, influence, or sales. Get over yourself. You're the arrogant, self righteous one.

When they become the best band of all time I'll become best friends with the Pope and the President. I mean c'mon, even if there was a fair way to call them the best band of all time the musical genius of The Beatles far surpasses the same riffes and subject matter that is Black Sabbath. I like Black Sabbath, don't get me wrong, but to make such a bold ignorant statement is just stupid. There is no way to tell who the greatest band of all time is because thats just an opionion made by a biased mind. Not everybody likes the same type of music, and not everybody likes the same bands. Thats what's so great about music, you get to choose what you like and who you like. Artists and bands are constantly releasing new material so the musical landscape broadens. And you can go wherever you want in this landscape, and you can pick your favorite spot, but that doesn't mean at all that's everybody's favorite spot.

Black Sabbath isn't better than any band from that time period in music (Beatles, Doors, etc.)

since this is probably one of my favorite bands of all time as i mentioned. it's my 1,000th shout and i'm skipping that corny thank you thread, i don't really have many people to thank anyway, i post on and off over the years. so i'm leaving a post here.

as the time has gone by, and i have been listening to black sabbath probably ever since i was a kid...as my dad's a huge fan, my favorite albums have changed. in chronological order i'd say my personal favorites would be something like vol. 4 > s/t > master of reality > paranoid. it was a tough call though where to place the s/t and master of reality, they're both almost equal to me. solitude is fantastic and i still can't wrap my head around the fact that those are actually ozzy's vocals. my first guess was actually bill ward. great band though. love them lots.

I love both Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and while I tend to favor Sabbath over Zeppelin, I do not necessarily think that Zeppelin is really "overrated". I think they're accurately rated. Sabbath's whole is better than the sum of its parts, while Zeppelin's parts are better than its whole. This isn't fact, of course, but merely my opinion.

I view Sabbath as the most important band of all time for me considering most of the music I listen to wouldn't exist if it wasn't for them.

On Led Zeppelin, it took me awhile to "get" them but I've grown to enjoy them as of late. Mostly Led Zeppelin II more than anything.

Anyway, more Sabbath talk. I've been listening to them since middle school but I didn't explore their albums until around high school and was blown away by Vol. 4, Master of Reality and their self/titled. Really started to appreciate them more then and now they are a top 5/10 band for me. I also like some Dio-era stuff, too.

Ditto. I more or less agree with everything here though. I've never been in love with Led Zeppelin like everyone else and honestly a lot of their stuff bores me but whatever.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is my personal favorite record of theirs, followed by Master of Reality and the self-titled.

As an old fart that remembers when Black Sabbath was new and different, I have a very subjective view on the band. I was just a young kid but i paid very close attention to music and the adults around me were always playing albums or the radio. The 70s was a dismally boring era for music. When we were lucky, my older brother and i were allowed to listen to the only stuff we thought was good - Hendrix, Zeppelin, Cream, and... well almost nothing else.
Then my older brother used his allowance to get this odd scary looking album with a witch woman in front of a castle. Black Sabbath's self titled album. That album is far heavier than anything that had come before, but it has deep groovy blues, a little jazz, Medieval guitar, etc. For me it was full of mystery and moods. I fell in love.
I would listen to all the original Sabbath albums. Never had interest in Ozzy solo stuff or post-ozzy Sabbath. i tried to like it, but i never did. Really, nothing else excited me until I heard punk in the late 70s.
So because i was a young kid laying back in the den with only red and blue dim lights, some incense my parents had lit, tripping away on those early Sabbath albums, my perspective is from the inside and very limited.
Some people think Sabbath is corny or worse. i can understand. But critics should understand the context of what they are criticizing. No one but Sabbath really tapped that deep dark mystery spirit so consistently and subtly. Sure, Zeppelin tapped into it in a song here or there, but not like Sabbath. Hendrix got into that a little too, with Voodoo Child, Voodoo Chile, and Machine gun. But Sabbath did it for a decade of albums.
one more note: unfortunately, Sabbath inspired "Heavy Metal" music. i think almost all of metal sucked and those that didn't were inspired by punk.
