Hey, sorry this is late...My browser closed both times I tried doing this before, lets see if it happens again. I've got my friend Adam from Desa (http://www.desadesadesa.com) doing picks with me this week as well. I'll get right into it!
Nada Surf (http://www.nadasurf.com) - Everyone remembers that song "Popular", and the zero hits they followed it up with. While there may not have been any mainstream sucess following their first record "High/Low", they did follow up with two amazing records that have been in my CD player for months. Check them out!
Locale A.M. (http://www.localeam.com) - It's a shame this band broke up. It really is, they made some really amazing music. If you don't have anything by this band and you wanna check them out, PLEASE IM me and I'll try to send you some stuff. My name is LinkEightyATRC, they're a band that had a huge impact on my life, and I think they're great.
Busdriver - I first saw Busdriver on that cLOUDDEAD tour a few years back, and I was really amazed at his fast rapping skills. His on record work is kind of reminiscent of Busta Rhymes. He's clever and comical, and that normally makes for a pretty entertaining MC. Check out the Busdriver.
Over It (http://www.overitonline.com) - I know Over It's been getting love here every other week by a member of the AP staff, and to be honest with you I never really understood why. I thought they were overhyped and never really gave them a chance...but after sharing the stage with them this weekend, and receiving a copy of Timing is Everything, and just hanging out with them a bit, I've been converted to an Over It fan. Great melodies and hooks are all over Timing is Everything.
and for the pick I'll probably receive the most hate for:
311 (http://www.311.com) - Everyone's heard of this band, they've been making hits for years. And while their style hasn't changed much, it remains fresh everytime they drop another record. I know there's a lot of cheesey lyrics and raps, but even with the amount of cheese spit by S.A. and Nick, there's just as many great melodies and harmonies...and the music is great!
and here's Adam from Desa's picks:
Hi Joel-
These are the CD's I'm currently stoked on:
Three Mile Pilot - Another Desert, Another Sea
My favorite album. The perfect soundtrack for staring out the window on a long trip or staying in your room for weeks at a time. buy yourself a copy of this album, then buy copies for all your friends. then realize this band broke up and get super depressed. you can see the singer in the Black Heart Procession, and the bassist/vocalist in Pinback.
also see: Pinback - Blue Screen Life, The Black Heart Procession - Three, Three Mile Pilot - Songs from an old town we once knew.
From Monument to Masses - The impossible leap in one hundred simple steps
Political and heavy without being stupid or sounding preachy. long songs, soundbites in the place of vocals, layered guitars, huge group vocal parts with no mics... sounds like DJ Shadow meets Fugazi.
also see: Yaphet Kotto - Syncopated Synthetic Laments for love, Refused - The shape of punk to come (duh) & Songs to fan the flames of discontent
The pAper chAse - Hide the kitchen knives
Ultra-creepy, hyper-obsessed. deep south evangelical sounding vocals over a torture-machine organ grinder. remember in college when you came home from that party to your dorm room and your roommate was crouched in the corner with the butcher knife with the lights out, talking about how he had to "cut out the evil"? yea, it's kinda like that.
also see: Xiu Xiu - Knife Play, Skinny Puppy - Too Dark Park
We Ragazzi - the ache
Why every kid into the Hot Hot Heat and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs isn't already into this band is beyond me. Dance-driven three-piece (keys, guitar-vox, drums). awesome song titles too, very much like the Prince "purple rain" album. Hott (with two t's).
also see: The Afghan Whigs - Gentleman, The Faint - Blank Wave Arcade, Xiu Xiu - A Promise
Coke Vs. Bills - 8 song demo
Matt Embree and Joe Troy from the Rx Bandits, riffing out as a duo, sharing vocal duties and sounding on the verge of destruction. This should be used for those skate boarding videos as the soundtrack for the part where they show all the skaters cracking their boards and eating shit. take it in the balls. sounds like the Jesus Lizard kind of.
also see: Satori - Three song demo, RX Bandits - Resignation, The Trust Foundation - The Pindrop
bam! laters dude.
