El_Jeffe
06/13/08, 07:19 PM
love the smiths! although not a fan of the wave of imitators since haha. the queen is dead is also my favourite of theirs

what morrissey did with his lyrics was astonishing, singing songs that dealt with topics that often didn't seem to belong in the pop realm. he really emphasized the possibility that a “simple” song could be as compelling, intimate, cultured & allusive, as any other form of great writing

the romance of morrissey’s vocals, fused with the affection of marr's melodic ways on the guitar was a beautiful thing. it's hard to believe the band was only together for such a short amount of time, yet were such an intense eruption of creativity. a couple decades on, their music has soaked into the masses & their influence is as obvious as ever, so many bands owe a great debt to the smiths

Kid B
06/13/08, 07:22 PM
I agree, they're one of the most important bands of all time. And yes, Morrissey was one of the best lyricists of all time too.

girlfriend in a coma, i know
i know - it's serious
my, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye

there were times when i could
have "strangled" her....

such troubled bleak, vindictive lyrics. but at the same time, whenever you listen to it, you could almost swear it was a love song (well if you're not paying much attention)

also, johnny marr is actually another really big finn fan, he appeared with the two finn brothers on their dvd 7 worlds collide & appeared again on the latest crowded house album, time on earth, for a few tracks

I can never decide whether I like The Queen is Dead or the self titled more.
The self-titled has some of my absolute favorite Smiths songs on it ("This Charming Man," "Still Ill," "Suffer Little Children"), but I find The Queen Is Dead to have a much better flow, and just better overall songs on it. I also love the production on The Queen Is Dead, and that is the one thing I dislike about the self-titled.

Osto
06/13/08, 09:51 PM
I like the production on the self titled a lot, but I can see why someone wouldn't. Vicar in a Tutu ruins the flow of Queen imo.

I actually think it's a good idea to listen to their albums chronologically, so I'd say start with The Smiths and work from there. They're all really good, so you really can't go wrong no matter where you start, but this way you can hear the evolution of the band and how they matured.

The only promptings I've had to listen to this band were from a bunch of humongous brand new fans. I like brand new, but was very cautious to listen to this band and simply be labeled as one of the braindead fucks who heard the name in 'mix tape' and then got all their cd's because jesse lacey's taste clearly consists only of the musical equivalents to the nectar of the gods.

that said, I remember REALLY liking that 'Sing Me to Sleep' song.

I liked this band before I knew Brand New existed. They are huge, can't believe people equate the too in the way I can understand with Manchester Orchestra and Neutral Milk Hotel.

It was more the personal pride of not saying I found the Smiths from brand new. Kind of crappy on my part.

Anyway, I'm shocked that this thread hasn't been created until today. The Smiths are one of the bands I've enjoyed since the years of my youth.

Where as it's understandable why so many people get into Manchester Orchestra and Neutral Milk Hotel through Brand New because they aren't that well known, Ben can't believe The Smiths, who are alternative rock legends, have been relegated to that same status for a lot of members on this site.

I didn't really know The Smiths until recently, knew OF them, just didn't listen that much,

My mum's partner heard me listening to an Anberlin cover of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and showed me the original track, along with the whole of TQID and it's brilliant, I love it.

Being a massive Brand New fan before I'd got into them, I can see the influence in places aswell so it's a nice little link. Anyone heard the 2nd untitled demo on the leaked EP? Sometimes called "Morrissey"? Sounds just like them haha. One of my favourite songs ever.

Well, seeing as this is a Smiths thread...and there is a Smiths reference at the beginning of the trailer...I'd say it was a perfectly appropriate post. At least as appropriate as another cynical boost my post count response.

Its good to see a place where there are smiths fans my age. where i come from not alot of kids take on this kind of music -sighs-. But i suppose they are missing out on something great. Im pretty sure the queen is dead is the most flawless piece of music I have ever heard but whenever I recommend it to someone else my age they say its gay. But thats the glory about the smiths, all their stuff is ambiguos making them neither right nor wrong. Love them.

Not really. Tbh, Strangeways was my least favorite of their studio albums, but again, that comes down to personal preference. I think the lyrics and musicianship on TQIS & MIM are some of the best from the Smiths.

third "classic" artist to really impact me, though the word classic is very loosely defined for me. im a bit slow tracking down my music roots but this band is an example of pure satisfaction in that department. theyve got such a distinctive aesthetic, what with their dreamy textures and prominent basslines, i almost imagine them with grizzly bear-esque production if they were a band today. also, i'd expected morrissey to be a charismatic and compelling frontman and he absolutely did not disappoint. i love his lyrics and voice, and whats more, i love his expressions. the scat vocals at the end of "boy with the thorn in his side" are glorious. overall, truly fantastic pop music.

I agree about Morrisey, that guy's lyrics are immense. Always enjoy a nice bit of a Noel inetrview too, he talks a lot of sense. I mean I think I own all of their stuff, although can't be sure of that, and I don't think I can think of one song I dislike, Panic is a bit boring, but otherwise they were an awesome band, and simply, nothing either of them have put out since has come anywhere near it.

Viva Hate, Vauxhall and I, and Bona Drag. If you're a Smiths fan I think you'll dig Viva Hate, as it's not too far removed from their sound and some of the lyrical content even deals with the breakup. Vauxhall is my personal favorite but it's much sparser and largely ballad driven. Bona Drag meanwhile is a collection of songs that were for the most part previously unreleased on any album, and in my opinion it's one of his strongest releases. Any of the three would be a great start, but I'd probably suggest Viva Hate.

I'm won't act like I'm an expert on 80s pop culture, but I've been listening to a lot of British bands from that era these past three months, and I really can't find any other band that can convince me that they're better than The Smiths. I've already said why. I've always found a few other 80's bands better than them, I don't claim to know a lot about 80's music, because I don't really like it on a whole, but of the few bands I do enjoy, The Smiths aren't the best. I said that it was good to start with because it was the first Smiths song I ever heard. Maybe I should have clarified the context.
It's all good. It's actually the first one I heard also

I feel like there are definitely Brand New fans out there on this website who don't realize that.
See: Everyone in the Brand New thread ;-)

Does these guys have a particular album that is darker and more brooding, maybe even downright depressing, than their others?

The Queen Is Dead has I Know It's Over...possibly one of the most depressing songs ever.

"Asleep" gives it a good contender

Well, if you see The Smiths as tongue in cheek, none of their songs are actually depressing.

Just trying to get my foot in the door. Already very late to the party.

Heard a song from them once. It was average. It wasn't punk.

Agree'd. Though I cant stand You know it's over, because the chorus is a horrible reflection on life, especially when your in a bad mood anyway

I don't know... Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want is kinda depressing. So is How Soon Is Now. But that's just my opinion.

Uh... where does it say that The Smiths are punk?

Listened to the Smiths earlier this year and just couldnt get into them. Then I tried listening to them again a couple weeks ago and have been hooked ever since.

The Smiths helped influence many different punk, pop punk, and indie bands. If you really don't like that AbsolutePunk honors a great band, then I suggest you get the fuck out.

I would say that those two songs are (mostly Please Please Please) as How Soon Is Now? is a boring song. But those songs may be the exception to the rule.

I love How Soon Is Now, that guitar plus the lyrics make it one of my Top Ten Smiths songs probably.

Nah wasn't a fan of it. Found it somewhat bland compared to the early stuff. Particularly the black metal album they recorded earlier in their career.

How Soon Is JNow does lag on, but it's amazing.
