Any fans? I love her. Her fusion of punk/dub/reggae/indie/new wave/hip hop into a cohesive mess is so damn good and all her own.
If anyone is looking for a fresh listen, go listen to the album NOW. I highly recommend it. One of the best albums of 08 so far. Hands down.

It's rather entertaining to see how, over the last few years, we've seen a semi-eclectic, indie-centric female artist rise to the mainstream.
2006 - Regina Spektor
2007 - MIA
2008 - Santogold
All three are quite good, so it's nice to see them get such recognition.

Love MIA too but Santogold takes the cake.
I've yet to listen to Regina.

Santogold is cool, but it took me forever to realize that her L.E.S. Artistes video was supposed to pixelate and start over and it wasn't my TV. Well, at least I hope it's not my tv.

Good to see ya Craig and you should give it a shot for sure! She's a pretty interesting cat...I was reading an interview with her and she actually use to front a punk band called Stiffed who have a couple albums. She also stated her influences range from the Pixies to A Tribe Called Quest to Bob Marley to James Brown/Arethra Franklin to 80's new wave and its all evident on the album which is pretty cool.
If you want to check out a few songs, I recc: "L.E.S. Artistes", "You'll Find A Way", "My Superman" and "Lights Out"

If you havent listened to the album yet, you might be pleasently suprised...keep an open mind!
As for those Cubbies, how 'bout them! Best team in baseball...kinda makes me worry though. They could be setting us up for a gigantic fail of epic proportions.

I know the big let down is coming, Soriano is already out. But at least Pujols is too.

good to ya too mate. yet another great recc from ya, this was pretty decent. the first time i heard it i instantly enjoyed the first track "l.e.s. artistes" like you mentioned. but as the album went on i got this strange poor mans bjork vibe. then i listened to the album again & laughed at myself for being such an idiot haha, this actually takes on a whole new spin. you can hear the reggae & afrobeat influences (all those who didn't vote fela kuti in the 70's thread, for shame!). it's almost like she mixed fela kuti with fun boy three
with her sound, i just hope she goes down a more experimental path with her next album, cause she could easily go in the opposite direction & become very... "alternative/rebellious mainstream" or lily allen-equse, which would be a tragedy haha. i like the potential this album shows, i just hope it gets put to good use!

Haha, Im glad you like it! All I can say is, spend some more time with it...it's def a grower and get's better with each listen.
And I think she will continue on the experimental path....I was reading an interview with her and she stated that she wanted to make an album that broke boundaries on what the typical *brown girl* music sounded like and that she wanted nothing to do with the mainsteam idea of what *brown girls* sound like - like Ciara and Beyonce.
Which is by all means, a GREAT thing.

"Santogold's style has been compared often to that of M.I.A. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.I.A._%28artist%29).[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-pf-4)[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-village-18) Santogold said of the comparison: "We’ve worked with some of the same people and ... have similar influences. But the way we go around implementing those influences are very different, and I am in no way influenced by what the press are saying."[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-drownedinsound-9) Additionally, some of Santogold's material has been compared to that of the Pixies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixies),[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-village-18) which Santogold agrees with.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-drownedinsound-9) Santogold has also said that she is inspired by 1980s pop music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music). "I felt that a lot of pop music from the '80s had a depth to it, and I hope to bring back some more good pop songs."[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-drownedinsound-9) White also stated her liking for New Wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Wave_%28music%29)[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-drownedinsound-9) and critics named Siouxsie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siouxsie) to describe "My Superman".[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-19) The singer also cites Fela Kuti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fela_Kuti), James Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brown), Aretha Franklin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aretha_Franklin) and reggae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggae) music as influences.[21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-20) Santogold has made a point of not performing R&B (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_R%26B) or rap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapping) like other "brown girls",[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-drownedinsound-9) saying she is "not like Ciara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciara)."[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santogold#cite_note-mtv-7).

Also, interesting factoid...she was in a "punkish/skaish" band called Stiffed before she decided to go solo. Im trying to get a hold of their stuff.

I love M.I.A. but I wouldnt really say they sound TOTALLY alike (just to give ya a warning, Santogold has more of a full on band feel but still experimental) - I think if you can get into M.I.A., you'll def dig Santogold. Give it a shot =)

I LOVE Santogold I am so glad I had listened to her. Creator is my favorite by her. I also love her personality and personal views, she seems really down to earth and very cultured. Musically I think she is better than M.I.A.(she is really good too) just becasue of her versitlity.

Have heard rumors of a new album this summer...much excited! Can't wait to hear what it sounds like. Possibilities are endless.
Also, need to get a mod to change the title of this thread to Santigold since she had to change her name.
