Hey guys,
I've been looking around at colleges, and came across Berklee (in Boston).
Have any of you gone there/going there now? What's it like?
It looks like my freaking dream college, I'm just wondering what other people think of it.
Thanks

I don't know much about Berklee but I do go to a school right next to it. My only real experience with Berklee or its students was a 150 person house party with several kegs and 3 bands playing in the basement, one of which covered Pink Floyd. Needless to say, Berklee seems pretty cool.

Haha awesome, seems like the students have good taste in music!
I'm kinda worried about my audition piece though, I mean, I know I have like 2 years to get
it together, but I just don't know if the school will think I'm good enough.. but O well, just gotta stay
positive I guess.
Anyone else know anything about the school?

I have some friends that graduated from there, they absolutely loved it but it was super intense and can make you question whether music is the correct career path when you're doing it on such a high level, if that makes sense. The ones who stick it out end up with amazing careers because people in the music industry definitely respect the Berklee name and education. What sort of career are you looking to get out of this school, and what do you play?

O awesome. I can totally understand something like that making you realize if music is really what you want to do.
I'm looking to be a producer/audio engineer, but I play guitar and bass too.

Sorry guys, all I want is a little info or something from someone who has attended the school, after that this thread is free to fade away. haha

I went and visited there a couple years ago because I was interested in their Audio Production major. I don't know what you want to do, but for Audio Production you have to apply for it after your first year I believe. Its really competitive and hard to get in, so if you don't you're SOL. Everyone who goes there also has to have an instrument they play and take classes on and whatnot from what I remember. I have a friend who graduated from their Music Business program and I think she liked it alright.
Sorry, thats the best help I can offer. Go visit it if you're serious about attending.

Thanks for that, yeah I hear it's really competitive.
I'm really just relying on the idea that by the time I have to audition (I have like 2 or 3 years)
I'll be good enough to get it. I mean, I can play well now, but it's probably not enough.
Thanks though, I'll keep looking into it.

It's Berklee, almost every musicians dream school if they are considering going into music in university. However, unless you're freakin' amazing, I would forget about it haha.

My guitar teacher went to Berklee and he had difficulty getting in, though he did go for a major in performance.

It is also my dream to go to Berklee and major in Sound Production and Engineering. :]

To get in, you must try out at either the school itself or any of its campuses worldwide on your instrument on choice.

Haha sweet, maybe if we get in we'll have that together.

Yeah, in a few years my grandparents are going to take me up there to audition. I get nervous talking about it. haha

Although I'm not sure why we have to audition if we are going to get a degree in Sound Production, but hey, whatever it takes.

You'll be going for sound production, but you'll still be required to take heavy weighted music courses (Music Theory, Piano, Ear Training). My friend is actually attending Berklee for Film Composition. He's extremely gifted, and he even admitted that EVERYONE is more experienced and more knowledgeable then he currently is.

He's legit:

It's a music college in Boston, John Mayer went there, so it has to be good. haha

Basically if I had one wish, it would be that I got into that college. haha

John Mayer went there for one semester, and then dropped out and went to Atlanta and started just writing/playing music in the coffeehouse scene there.

Give you three guesses which helped him more...

Either way, it doesn't matter. The point is I really want to go to that college.

I remember when I was 15 I wanted to go to Berklee for production. Then I started smoking pot and listening to good music. Now I want to go to a college that pushes...you know...academics.

Thank god for sanity.

Actually, I will say that if you're set on going to music conservatory for college it is definitely a good idea to take music theory and piano in hs (if yours offers it) to get a solid foundation on the matter, because like someone said earlier they're pretty much standard classes there. Also, I'm not saying you should slack off but but Berklee is not competitive in academic means.

O ok cool, I plan on doing that.

Yeah I know, I'll probably go to get a degree in production, then go to an academic college so my life isn't a complete failure. haha

I know a bunch of people going there, or who went there and I also took vocal lessons for a few years down there (not at Berklee, but the studio was affiliated with it). Its incredibly difficult to get in and stay in, and I admire all the people who have stayed in there. It's in a great location, close to the Back Bay and downtown. The people who are in the area are generally nice and accepting and just cool people to be around.

I live in boston, and go by berklee all the time. its a great school, but they ram jazz down your throat, and even if you're doing a major that doesn't involve you playing an instrument, you have to not just play but be "very musically proficcent" to get in, and then take lots of music classes.

Thanks guys, I get it, it's hard to get in. I knew that. I was more going for what the college is like or good/bad feelings towards it.

I know it's hard, but I'm willing to work my ass off to get in.

Oberlin!?! Hahahahahaha.

Well then what we tell you doesn't really matter.

It totally depends on the type of person you are. One of my best friends did a summer thing there, and has looked there once or twice more and loves it. She loves the people she's met, loves the atmosphere, loves the city of Boston. She's a great girl, and hopefully she'll get in.

Another one of my friends, plays drums/keys in my band, is a phenomenal musician (got in, by the way, but isn't going) said that the school had pretty nice facilities, but everyone there is dicks, and the faculty stress certain things, and they love showing off their alumni (especially John Mayer, which is B.S. because it was one semester.). The entire atmosphere just pissed him off, and he said most people there were pretentious assholes who thought they were better than everyone.

So who knows? We can't tell you what you think of a school. People are different.
