Wait, I thought City of God won?
It was nominated for Director, adapted screenplay and a couple of technical things.

Amelie should have won instead of No Man's Land, and I don't understand why City Of God had several nominations but not best FL.
Anyways, I went with Life Is Beautiful. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. It was the first foreign movie I saw (aside from Spanish movies which don't count to me) and I saw it in a theater... three times. Having watched it a bajillion times and taken 7 years of Italian, there's no need for the subtitles. I love this movie oh so much.

The Best Foreign Language Film nomination process is probably the most incongruous selection process ever; several amazing films get snubbed every single year.
Life Is Beautiful. I love that movie more than words can describe.
Surprised Amalie didn't make the cut
I loved Amélie! We watched it in french class in grade nine, and everyone else was saying how weird it was... I was the only one that liked it.

See Live Flesh. Great early Javier Bardem performance. I've yet to see Talk to Her, though, and everyone says that's his best film.

That's actually one of the ones I have wanted to see for a long time that I have had a hard time finding a copy of. I don't know of a current release on dvd, but there's a thin rumour that Criterion has the rights to it, which doesn't mean a lot as they own the rights to dozens of unreleased films, in which case I would be all over it if they release it. From my Spanish film book (Blood Cinema by Marsha Kinder, highly recommended) it seems like a great, complex film, but I haven't seen any of it. However his stuff from just before Atame! is great: Matador, Law of Desire, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown are all pretty impressive considering how early he made them.
