I've heard whispers about this for a while, and didn't find a thread. I just recently checked back on imdb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0875034/) and found that this has been put into motion, and i can hardly contain my excitement
Nine is a musical with a book by Arthur Kopit and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. The story is based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film 81/2. It focuses on film director Guido Contini, savoring his most recent (and greatest) success but facing his fortieth birthday and a midlife crisis blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice
Check out this cast...
Daniel Day Lewis (*Edit*confirmed (http://www.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=28505))
Marion Contillard
Nicole Kidman
Judi Dench
Sofia Loren
Penelope Cruz
can i get a hell yes? for anyone who has not listened to or seen this musical, you must check it out. a glorious production, and Raul Julia's crowning achievement in my opinion. i'm immensely excited to see this adapted for the big screen. My only concern: Rob Marshall is attached to direct. between Chicago & Memoirs Of Geisha, i can't much appreciate his work at all.

To be honest, I have low expectations.

i can see that if only for direction, but when you've snagged the two most recent academy award winners(with one of them being the notoriously choosy day-lewis) and have a budget like Marshall seems to have gotten, i think you can be a little optomistic. granted day-lewis is not in the bag yet...

it will either be a huge hit or a huge flop.

Penelope Cruz could be in a movie with Larry the Cable Guy and I'd still go see it.
Good stuff, though I was excited about Bardem being in there.

i agree. he was a brilliant choice. he reminds me quite a bit of Raul Julia sometimes(who played the original role).

Wow. I just found out about this and don't really know what to think. Trying to base a film on a fucking masterpiece like 8 1/2 is ambitious, but I just don't think Marshall can pull it off. Shit, I don't really think anyone could pull that off.

Damn, I didn't know this was a musical until now. I only knew the name because DDL is going to be in it. I hated Chicago, dammit. But DDL is picky about his roles and anything he does is amazing, so this better turn out well.

My friend showed me the trailer for this the other day.

I saw the play when Antonio Banderas was in it. It was really good. It's going to be weird seeing DDL play Guido, but I'm sure he can do it. I'm looking forward to this adaptation--great female cast.

Agreed. I really liked the first trailer, but then I saw the second one (which I believe premiered on TV, which has everything to do with it) and realized Fergie is in this which decreased my interest tenfold. However, I trust DDL and I still maintain hope that this will be great.

So many Oscar nominations, so little time.
With this being Marshall, the musical itself, and the casting, this is going to be phenomenal.

new trailer is great. can't wait for this.
finally kate hudson steps out of her typical bad romantic comedies. she showed so much potential in almost famous and blew it with bad movie after bad movie.
of course, the main reason why i want to watch this is ddl, but the rest of the cast is just so intimidating, with the exception of fergie.

not bad (or good), but I had no expectations going in other than expecting to see a couple of solid performances (which I did).

Some of the numbers were really bad and poorly executed, it was poorly paced overall, and Marshall made some stylistic choices that were just worthless within the context of the movies. I think after Marshall got certain cast members he made the decision to try and make it more than it was. Tried and failed.

From the sound of it, Marshall just rips himself off a lot (from Chicago), the songs are mediocre, and the much hyped cast/performances generally fall short of expectations.
