On their almost 12-minute long, 11-track full-length debut, these New Jersey hellraisers incorporate some pretty impressive riffs into their metallic mayhem in the vain of Pig Destroyer but with a little bit less of the groove. In fact, the guitar work is almost entrancing, even if the vocalist sounds a lot more like Anal Cunt’s Seth Putnam than he needs to.
You’ve got to admire grindcore bands who actually try to sound musical, especially during a time where joke grindcore is becoming trendy (well, as trendy as that garbage could possible be, which isn’t very much). There are no ridiculous pig squeals or high-to-low pitch-yelling fluctuations, and thank God there are no breakdowns. Why, there’s not one cliché artificial harmonic riff to be found in the whole quarter-hour set. These are basically just death-metal songs sped way-the-fuck-up to the point that they sound like how a hummingbird looks.
Abiding by the laws that Slayer laid down in the 1980’s, Gridlink prove to us once again that the chromatic scale is by far the most evil scale that there is. They prove that to us 11 times, from the title track to “Severance Package,” the latter of which actually makes it to 1:22, making it the longest song on the album. Incredible.
Sloppy, mile-a-minute blast-beats drive the disc from start to finish without a moment of levity and each track is pretty much connected, so the songs all sound the same. But that’s grindcore for you. What matters is that the adrenaline is through the roof, and that there’s no way in hell I could play this on guitar.
