View Full Version : Scott Walker
_jonas turned me onto this guy. The Drift came out in 2006 and is the scariest album I have ever listened to. I extremely recommend it.

He's my best friend in real life and he turns me onto a lot of the stuff I listen to.
Ima give it a go :)
You should. It's fantastic. Listen to it at dark all alone.
Anybody listened to him yet?

Yes, and I kinda like it. Little old times innit, but I agree that was a scary album!

He makes very atmospheric and abstract music.

he's great but like jamie from xiu xiu said in an awkward interview which took place in a van: HE SOUNDS THE SAME ON EVERY SONG
Has anyone seen Scott Walker: 30 Century Man? 'Bout to watch via Netflix Instant.

His voice, yeah, but that's to be expected with the expressive baritone sound. The arrangements themselves vary wildly.

I've had that in my queue for a while now. That and the No Wave documentary that's supposedly shitty.

No Wave documentary is pretty shitty. It was on IFC a couple of years back, the first part is interesting, but then the second half is just about Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the modern New York "no wave scene" which doesn't exist, I don't know, I was planning on re-watching that tonight as well.

Huh. That doesn't sound particularly encouraging. A buddy told me that it started strong with an interview with Martin Rev, but neglected to mention the "contemporary No Wave" noise. They claim that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are headlining some No Wave revival in New York?

i just stumbled upon it the other day and did some browsing, don't get too flattered
Yeah, it was filmed in '03 or something, so YYYs were a tad less formal than I guess, but still out of place. The other modern bands they profiled are kind of relevant, but still weird choices (Black Dice, Liars, Gogogol Bordello, etc).
But it's totally worth it for the first half, some good live footage of DNA, Suicide, Mars, Teenage Jesus and generally good interviews, like that Martin Rev one you mentioned, Thurston Moore, etc.

Liars and Black Dice make sense. He didn't tell me who all was interviewed. That sounds cool. I'll give it a view.

There were tons of noise artists in New York who intermingled with the No Wave artists. Glenn Branca was doing his best to translate those noisey sounds of LaMonte Young to guitar riffs. Dudes from Black Dice constantly jock early No Wave as inspirations among a billion other things. I mean, they started out as Hardcore kids and moved through so many phases. They're not "part of a No Wave movement," and don't really have much common lineage with the early artists but their inclusion on that DVD wouldn't be inappropriate if they're just discussing how dudes from the No New York mix inspired them or whatever.

Scott 3 is my favorite from his Scott albums, mainly because of ¨Sons Of¨

Man, that No Wave doc is horrible. It starts off fine, but the story is "New York City music," with No Wave somehow indicative of the city's sound, as opposed to a small, pocket subgenre that was enabled/inspired by their surroundings. That's dumb. Going in, I assumed they'd just collected some of the underground bands in New York at the time to give their impressions of early No Wave artists, but instead, they were all painted to be the continuation of that sound/scene thirty year later. Like, early Liars and some of Black Dice's stuff had No Wave elements, but most of this shit was inspired by entirely different scenes/sounds. It's a clumsy doc. Lydia Lunch sounds especially bad during the second portion while shittalking the "new scenes." Karen O is a retard. Why did they think it was a good idea to let her talk in front of a camera? She said "like" or "you know" every other word. And the Strokes somehow enabling an NYC underground? Suck.

Wow, I was really surprised by Climate of Hunter. I would´ve have never expected it to sound like Tilt-era material, I just presumed it was just like his pop stuff. Heh, Track 3/From the Host is awsome. Probably the most ¨rocking¨ Scott song there is.

He's 68 now. He looks pretty good for his age. The hair is gone, but oh well
I think 4 is my favorite now. Not as consistent as 3, but its has his best pop songs.
