Self-explantory. Which do you like better? Which do you feel are more commonly associated with good lyrics? Give examples. Discuss.

It is much better to have a mix of both, where some lines are rhymed conveniently and others are free verse but I vote free verse.

Whichever comes out when they are writing, if either sounds natural for the person, then I think it will work out in the end. Alkaline Trio songs rhyme, and it seems to work very well for them, but I also really enjoy the lyrics from Hearts Once Nourished With Hope And Compassion by Shai Hulud, they are more free flowing and don't rhyme.

A discontent for the vile and the wretched
Will bring forth reparations of the most severe degree
Things will change
And I will be the catalyst to
Weed out the weak and beget strength of character
Glorifying minds and souls
Celebrate the spirit while denying breath and life
To those who would choose to live depraved
Depravity, a thing of the past
A life not in vain
I am the end, I am beginning life anew
My soul is free from weakness
Free
Refined as gold
A standard to be met by all
As we embrace righteousness, we embrace life
Purified, united. set aside from the majority
I will serve as an example to man as hope
By defending those I love with my life
I stand here bold and strong
As a testament to my abstinence
My heart is open; this slate is clean.

Rhyming is for people with bad memory.

For me right now, it's musically meh, but lyrically strong.

I'm really digging. One of the better Metalcore releases this year.

I just have to give it some more listens, I am not really sure how much of it I've really absorbed...I would expect nothing less than metalcore perfection, but nothing will top the Chad Gilbert days.

True but its not really fair to compare.

Rhyming really takes a great lyricist to pull off and still be great lyrics. I voted rhymed, but most of the time the best lyrics are free verse obviously.

when I write stuff I wirte free because I'm too stupid and not clever enough to make rhymes, so I enjoy and respect free verse

I think it depends on the band... Some bands can write songs that sound good rhymed, while other bands aren't so great at it. Whenever I think of lyrics, I usually think of ones that rhyme, but that's just me...

Although a good rhyme can sound great, I'd rather the lyrics not be held back by the restriction of having to rhyme.

I kinda like a mix of both. I think CAKE does a really good job of it and the way they John McCrea expresses it in the music is just awesome.

Depends on the context.

Whichever best fits the music or the mood. Rhymes or a lack thereof can dictate the mood just as much as the tone of the music.

I voted for rhymed, though, because I'm listening to "Jude Law And A Semester Abroad" and loving Jesse's angstridden rhymes.

Free verse; not that rhyming is bad in itself, but it gets cheesy really easily.

Some bands can rhyme well, some can't. So I voted free verse because, well, I don't know.
