View Full Version : Cover What You Can (Requests Welcome)

Due to the popularity of my own songs in the Live From The Laptop thread, this is something new I am going to start.
Request as many covers as you like and if I like the song (but not enough to not want to kill it), I will give it the cover treatment. These won't be live covers, they will be tracked which will allow me to add cooler stuff to them and have them overall attain a higher quality.
This was instigated by finding an mp3 on my friends computer that I recorded last year of "Lone Wolf" by Eels.

Hahahahaha I knew you'd get a kick out of that. It is going to be an up tempo acoustic power pop jam by the time I am done

Positively Fourth Street by Bob Dylan

I need to get my capo back and then I will have "The Poison" by PTL nailed. The closing two lines to that song actually gave me the shivers the first time I heard it;
"My old man swore that hell would have no flame, just a front row seat to watch your true love pack her things and drive away"
I will also look into the Dylan track, as I adore that song

You'd be glad to know that thanks to one particularly hilarious and apt episode of "How I Met Your Mother", I love playing "You Give Love A Bad Name"
As for Man Orc songs, I would do either 'Sleeper 1979' or 'I Can Barely Breathe'

I would have to be hooked up with the Tall As Lions songs as I don't have them
Styrofoam, Wilco and Weezer are all great choices and highly likely for me to take a stab at.
I adore "No One's Gonna Love You More" by Band Of Horses (from one of last years best albums), but I just can't cover it due to how high that dudes voice is for the majority of the song. I have tried so many times but I just can't do it any sort of justice.
Josiah has asked me to cover the Carissa's Wierd song before but I couldn't find tab or chords for it anywhere online (another outstanding song)
And I'll look into the Jackson Browne song

As for The Weakerthans, I would probably cover "Virtute the cat explains her departure"

Ahhh I know... That's one of the best lines I've ever heard... It's so solid! Achilles Heel is slowly but steadily becoming my most played album.
Good luck with the Bob Dylan song... I don't think it should be too bad to learn. :-)

This is awesome. I tried to pick artists I know you like.
Bright Eyes - When The President Talks To God (or any BE song, really...but I'd really like to hear you do this one)
Pedro The Lion - Priests & Paramedics
Arcade Fire - Keep The Car Running
Brand New - Untitled 01
Elliott Smith - Twilight
Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway
Pompeii - Miracle Mile
Radiohead - No Surprises
Straylight Run - The First Of The Century
Thursday - Asleep In The Chapel

I'll add another vote for this, too. Would be interesting to see what you do with it.

David Bazan is probably one of the top 5 most underrated lyricists of all time in my book. He blows almost everyone else out of the water.

Brand New - Untitled 01
Elliott Smith - Twilight
Pompeii - Miracle Mile
A skewed and weird version of Brand New's "demo #1" is actually going to be recorded fully by Francis and I for House & Home.
Pompeii and Elliott Smith are both possibilities

Not really hahahahaa
I have learned most of them, even performing a few at acoustic shows and open mic nights in and around my area.
Problem is my social life has flourished in the last month meaning I have had bugger all free time. I promise I will try and get some stuff on the go soon though

haha sweet... nah dude, i wasn't trying to rush you or anything... just kinda checking in.
it's good to see that you're playing open mic nights and such... and flourishing social life is always a plus as well.
but yeah, if you make any sort of progress, i'll be checking here and live from the laptop... perhaps even starting a myspace for my own songs in the near future, if you'd be interested.
Richard Ashcroft - You on my mind in my sleep
The Wombats - Kill the director
Coldplay - Shiver
Willy Mason - Oxegen
The yeah yeah yeahs - Maps
Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia

That's probably one of my favourite songs I've written (along with "You're" and "Concede a Smile"...although the latter has its flaws)
