I loved DGD with Jonny, so when he left I expected them to fail.

I was super wrong.
The new stuff is great.
While i still think the first 2 cd's were better, i love the new shit they're putting out.

because the music they play isn't uncommon and its not innovative. They're a flavor of the week band that got big cause of MySpace. Hence why I don't take them serious.

There is a rumor going around that Jon and Eric left DGD.

I talk to Jonny Craig often via myspace and..

To Me: "there done jon and eric quit"

To Jonny from me: " woahh are you fucking serious?
I just heard from their myspace that it was just a rumor.
Where'd you hear it?"

To Me: eric told me.

But who knows, Jonny could still just be pissed at them, but he says he isn't.
I think it's safe to say its just a rumor though.

Meh, it isn't innovative, but it is different then most of the music getting popular these days.
They just have a certain thing about them.
People can enjoy a bands music even if they aren't "innovative", ya know?

Okay, I see. I think they are a little innovative though, just not the grindcore part of what they do.
I should start a thread about this instead of talking about it in this DGD thread, but all my threads always fail to get more than to get more than two responses (besides that thread I made about norma jean maybe covering nirvana, that had ten)

Haha Yeah, radiohead is original. What a shitty quality to have. You can also hear what the singer is trying to tell you! and better yet, what he's trying to tell you isn't some poem about having a broken heart that sounds like it was written by a 12 year old whos never even had a girlfriend!

Nice post in that thread about the screamo/rap or whatever the fuck it was.
Everybody in DGD plays an instrument and their black guitarist is great.
I don't hate Radiohead, but its all slow and bland.

Get OK Computer. It was the first album that I was truly aware of at the time of it's release and just a great album through and through. If you want something poppier, go with The Bends. And it seems most Radiohead fans would call Kid A their best, but while you might like it, it's probably the least safe bet that you would enjoy.

Uhh, I don't know what your talking about in some screamo/rap thread. Bland? There is no band that has ever accomplished what Radiohead has accomplished. And nice. 1 song has bad lyrics out of almost 1 hundred. Different is not the same as good. Different doesn't mean shit if the the lyrics suck. And I'm not ignorant. I know a lot of people that listen to shit like this and am forced to listen to it all the time. I never degraded you as a person for listening to shit like this. I don't know how I can "keep" doing that when I haven't even started yet. And I guess that your source of excitement in your life is distorting reality by making things up about others and bending the rules and expectations of what is and original.

I actually really enjoy the new album. Some of the melodies they come up with are actually pretty interesting and catchy, such as in Buffalo!

If you haven't listened to it, give it a chance, and although Jon Mess' vocals can be a little hard to bear at times, try to overlook that.

hardpill
08/27/08, 09:45 AM
Mess's vocals grow on you after a while. And his screaming meshes with Travis's vocals a lot better than they did with Jonny Craig's. Not to mention, he makes sense out of the whole, as opposed to Jonny's crooning-for-the-sake-of-crooning. I think Craig has a great voice, but for some reason I always felt that it took you out of the moment the rest of the song sets up.

I prefer the new vocalist too.

I can stand Mess' vocals really, but what really gets me are his horrible lyrics.

Mess' vocals are worse on this album than on any of their other releases. No contest.

I don't know if i'd say they're any better or worse. I think it's more of a matter that they are more prevailant over the subtler spotlight on the clean vocals, as well as not being matched up against the wall of sound from the last two. Plus, he kind of treads off on his own tangents apart from everyone else, as opposed to simply complimenting what's already being told.

Yeah, thats annoying. Like the song with Nick Newsham in it, there's no reason for his completely senseless, and stupid, lines.

I personally can't see THAT much difference in Jonny and Kurt's voices,

Only that Jonny belts a little more and seems to have a bit more of a rasp to his voice, but other than that it's not that much of a change for me,

And they haven't said why Mess left, only that he knew he was going to leave even whilst recording the self titled.

Wahhh what's with the Mess hate?!

I know a lot of people didn't like his screaming, but it did something for me, I liked how it was raw sounding and he wasn't trying to sound like every other heavy vocalist in similar genres,

I personally think it really helped to give DGD a signature sound, the contrast between him and Jonny, and now Kurt, just really worked for me.

It is raw though, if you listen to it it hasn't been effected or anything like that, it's just his pure screaming voice, I dunno, it's more about the energy for me with stuff like that.

I just like that he did his own thing with it, shows he doesn't really care if it isn't the "best scream".

just search "production" in thread titles and see what comes up and if it's relevant. If so, bump that thread

If not, make one entitled "Producers are like lawyers for music" and talk about how they let bad bands get away with things that they shouldn't

see what I did there?

"The Past Should Stay Dead" and "Set it off like Napalm" were both great songs, but I felt that the music suffered for want of the band feeling that they should show off their new singer's voice. Thus Johnny was left pretty much on his own and the album wasn't too well received. Had the rest of the album been as good as those two songs I've already mentioned, the album may've been huge.

I don't understand what everyone's obsession is with liking albums as a whole nowadays. With the digital age, you can just delete everything you don't like and it's all fine

Yeah I agree with that, it is much easier to chop and change between artists and albums and things, so liking a whole album isn't necessary anymore.

I dunno, it's definitely got a tighter feel to it, whereas self titled has that increasingly popular "natural recording" sound to it, if anyone follows? Like, it sounds a lot lighter overall, clearer, when I quite like the more bass driven, tight production of DBM.

i saw them when they were headlining their "The Party Star Tour" with Four Letter Lie, A Static Lullaby, Secret and Whisper and also, LOWER DEFINITION.

Kurt was really good live and watching the band itself was phenomenal. I've always wanted to see them live, since their "Royal Ocean" days. At this time, Jon Mess, Johnny Craig (obviously) and Eric (i forgot his last name, the bassist) had already left the band already. Although I'd love to see the original line-up.

In my personal opinion, the new S/T/The Death Star Album is probably the best work they've ever put out. It just takes a bit to grow on you. I'm glad Johnny left because with him in it, i don't think the new release would suit his style of singing.

no offence to what you just said but i think Uneasy Hearts is the weakest song to ever be released from Dance Gavin Dance. i'm not saying that its not an amazing song and Nic just spices the song up so much. i just think it's really weak for a Dance Gavin Dance song, thats all.

i liked Downtown... better. I can't get into the newer one as much. Having said that, I haven't listened to both equally so i'm not sure i can pass accurate judgement. but from first listen... Downtown seems to have more passion, more of a burning intensity. *shrugs*

When i first listened to "Untited" when it leaked or when the band released the new songs on their myspace even, lets just say i was really disapointed with Kurt joining the band and Jonny leaving. I hated it, but just give it time to grow on you. i think their newer stuff shows the huge stepping stone and progression of the band, give it time, thats all i'm suggusting. but we all have opinions. Downtown might more of "your thing", who knows.

Hey fly_guy, are you hitting up the Dance Gavin Dance show in Denver at the Marquis on the 29th? I'm really fucking stoked for this, although the absence of Jon Mess has me worried. But even the local openers are really fucking good, My Body Sings Electric is badass.

yeah i listened to it again after i wrote that post and i don't mind the new album. It is different and I will say that the vocals just aren't as BIG (i'm tired, i can't think of the words), but you get that. I wouldn't expect the vocals to be exactly the same anyways.

I think the new singer is a bit too good to be honest. He hits all the notes perfectly, exactly how they should be hit.

Jonny had a bit of a raw edge to him. He obviously struggled to hit some notes sometimes, but this really added to his own unique sound and made him sound much more emotional and passionate. I really FELT what he was singing. With Craig, I just don't feel it the same, it all sounds too easy!

Yeah that's pretty much what I was referring to, not that I have anything against swearing but it loses its value when its used over and over like that and it just kind of sounds like a 9th grader wrote the song.

I agree. Jonny's lyrics weren't always the greatest, but atleast it wasn't a huge childish rant. Jon's lyrics are so childish, I mean seriously, we get the point that the relationship between him and Johnny didn't end well, but he doesn't need to write about that in just about every song and add in fuck 80 gazillion times to express his anger, we get the point. It's like that sucky rap but sung in hardcore. It's so good Jon's gone.

Haha perfect example. I remember the first song I listened to off that album was Rock Solid and it was:
"The first thing I say in the morning is fuck that shit
People are offended and tired, so fuck that shit"
I was like wooww, way to start off a song like that. :jawdrop:
