What on the web makes you listen to a new band?

I am trying to figure out the best way to get people to listen to my band.

to be perfectly honest: not threads on ap.net. you are going to either get trolled into oblivion or completely ignored.

also being perfectly honest: play shows, make friends, put out releases on your own. that's really the only way to do it. it's harder work than blowing up via myspace, but you'll be a better band because of it.

i was thinking about doing that but I dont think we sound like Paramore. I like Paramore and I think their fans would like our style but people get pissy if you compare your self to their favorite band.

its hard to ignore a site that gets so much traffic and has been pivotal (sp chk?) in so many bands careers. We do play shows, we do make friends and we do put releases out on our own but it seems like if you get one good post on AP.net everyone and there mom starts talking about you.

Is it wrong to want that?

I like your music but really try doing more shows rather than myspace. It would probably make your band a lot more popular than you would think.

I don't tend to invest time in Myspace bands with demos.

Put out at least an EP and look like you might have a future, and I'll try you on for size.

Play every show you can get your hands on. If you can't find one to play, book your own. Set up free acoustic shows in parks with other sweaty kids. Play as often as possible. Don't worry about linking people to your MySpace. Anybody can get 1000 friends up there. You don't need myspace friends, you need fans.

I have been promoting for bands i've played in for 7 years ( ask anyone who has gone to Chain Reaction) and its pretty wearing to see bands get popular off of myspace plays and not off of flyering and playing shows like we still do.

Oh for your info we do have a EP and its for sale on our webstore and on itunes and we have played many shows with bigger bands including PARAMORE ( OMG !!!! that was for the first reply i got in the thread) and other awesome bands

Its really tough to ignore myspace and purevolume in the music industry today. Can you tell me a successful band in the last 3 years who hasnt embraced myspace/purevolume? I am a still fan of the flyering at a show method and handing out demo cds. Something about human interaction you just cant beat

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. My band does the myspace and the purevolume thing as well. I guess I've found the music industry to be a bit of a lost cause at this point and time becuase of the internet :shrug:

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. My band does the myspace and the purevolume thing as well. I guess I've found the music industry to be a bit of a lost cause at this point and time becuase of the internet :shrug:

I mean, the way I've always done it is playing/recording for pretty much nothing in the way of profit. If you look at it that you are always going to play your ass off, make recordings, maybe tour, and still have to have a dayjob, you'll find it a lot less strenuous. Do it without getting signed. If you can't do all of it without getting signed, do what you can. Just play music. I play tons of shows, most of them in basements of people's houses. I have only played in a place with a stage and/or instrument mic'ing three times. That's not a "sweet brag" either. You'll just feel like you and your music are more cozy and you can just do whatever.

Promo photos? whatever. Press? whatever. Image? whatever.

I mean, of course, that's only one approach. If someone told me I wouldn't have to work if I could scream and thrash around with a bass guitar like I'm doing now, I'd take it (within reason of course.)
