Third is a great album. The overall sound of the record is perfect. The textures and sort of "vintage" sound work so well with the vocals.

I got this on an impulse buy and I am pretty darn happy about it.

Any fans?

I need to get their older albums, which apparently are better than "Third" but I enjoyed it very much. Creeped the hell out of me the first time I listened to it.

Yeah, the older stuff sounds a bit more electronic which I will probably lean more towards.

I've been meaning to pick them up.

Yes. And?

I like Dummy. Wandering Stars is awesome.

Said it before and I'll say it again, Dummy absolutely slaughters Third.

Probably true but it doesn't mean that Third is not a solid album.

especially for being away for 10 years.

I can't sit through it. The band would have been better off stripping the album of vocals entirely.

I wish I had Dummy in something over 128kbps.

My favourite female vocalist of all time, brilliant.

I was underwhelmed by Third, and they're second has never impressed me all that much, either.

As far as Trip-Hop goes, Dummy is (along with Blue Lines/Mezzanine and Maxinquaye) one of the genre's few classics.

Third sucked, people hopped all over that shit nonetheless. Self-titled is far better.

Self-titled vs. Dummy?

Dummy of course.

None.

Wasn't even listenable to me.

Wasn't even listenable to me.

I thought they really uped the ante on the whole disillusioned, dystopic, Blade Runner-esque sound they had going on their first two albums by putting the beats and the music in more of a background role and letting Beth's voice become the thing of children's nightmares. I'd love to discuss this more but I have to head to work. Later, perhaps?

I found they completely squandered that vocal asset. Beth and the music sounded like disparate, clashing entities and it detracted from any semblance of fluid melody to me. Shame too, because I was quite excited for the release.

Surprised to see a Portishead thread on AP.net. I love all three albums.

Yeah, I didn't hate Third, I just haven't really had the urge to listen to it at all after the first few listens, as everyone else says though, Dummy is really good.

Started listening to them the other day, Dummy is top notch. I've also heard the self-titled once, and I liked it. I'm really liking this band, and the genre in general.

I'm going to disagree with Vinh here, I love the contrast between Beth's haunting vocals and the abrasive music on Third. Looking forward to giving Dummy and the self-titled record listens.

Third is very good, definitely worth a listen. We Carry in->Deep Water->Machine Gun is one of the best three track runs I've heard in a long time.

Portishead will be touring this summer, according to some European festival organizers.

Maybe an appearance at Bonnaroo is in the cards?

As I listen to Dummy and Third again, it becomes pretty obvious to me that Third is their best album by a while margin. Its their most ambitious and engaging album, plus The Rip is a masterpiece
