View Full Version : Music from the past

Although I'm new, it seems to me that people either don't say anything or don't acknowledge bands from the past. There have been so many great bands that have influenced, and in most cases are better than today's bands. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or make anyone angry, because I'm very open-minded, I'm just trying to get people to recognize things.
Operation Ivy basically created ska/punk, and are two of my favorite bands of all time, they only made one album, but it was enough to change music for the genre.
Minor Threat is a great hardcore band, and accidently started a lifestyle, "straight-edge", which means you do not use any drugs or alcohol or have promiscious sex, (which I follow, abbreviation is in my sn)
There are too many other bands to go in depth, (Bad Religion, Misfits, Ramones, etc.) but I just want people to recognize these bands, and learn from them, without half of these bands, today's bands wouldn't exist.

Bon Jovi, Metallica, Pantera, The Who, Operation Ivy, Ramones, Judas Priest, Led Zepplin...yummy.
Did this morph into the "What 'old stuff' are you into thread?" ...
I could so play that game, good times. :)

Hell yeah. I hear ya there.
I don't particularly see marcy playground as being an influential band...but I do however really enjoy them. I think people don't really give them any credit or know any of their albums. I have all three and love them!
I wish more people knew more about them.

I really don't think Operation Ivy started anything, they suck if you ask me.
And here are some good oldies..
Bowie, Billy Idol, The Undertones, Buzzcocks, The Beatles and ton's others. But there are tons and tons of Ska bands before Operation Ivy, that was a little silly of you to say .. have you ever heard ot The English Beat? Hmm.
The Bled 13
03/15/04, 03:11 PM
Or Madness or The B-52's?

No one asked you.
old school shit? hmm i'll probably just do as aurora did and list some old stuff i like:
The Clash, Dag Nasty, Descendents, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, AC/DC, Beach Boys, Beatles, CCR, Bob Marley, Cheap Trick, James Brown, Guns and Roses, Police, The Cure, etc etc etc
The Bled 13

Yeah cause you obviously have your head up your ass saying that they didn't start anything.

03/15/04, 05:20 PM
Whoa hoe hoe hoe .. I guess I do, why don't you "enlighten" me to what they started?
Trainsaw
03/15/04, 05:21 PM
because they were very influential in the whole ska/punk wave.
The Bled 13
03/15/04, 05:23 PM
Okay, I could see how they were influential, but I don't really believe that they had started anything since bands such as The English Beat and Madness and ton's others had came before them. But I'm sure they didn't influence Reel Big Fish, I'm sure it was more bands like Leftover Crack and Choking Victim.
Trainsaw
03/15/04, 05:26 PM
Yeah and seeing as how Choking Victim is better than RBF i'd say we have ourselves a winner with Op Ivy

03/15/04, 05:30 PM
Reel Big Fish is just terrible, I made the mistake of seeing them live and I started to understand why all the "good" SKA bands fucking hate them. I was watching a video for .. Choking Victim?? I think .. and they made some comments about that band, it was pretty funny, what is also funny is how much weed they smoke, that is funny.
Trainsaw
03/15/04, 05:34 PM
Choking Victim broke up a long time ago. Leftover Crack resulted from C.V., where did you see this video at?

My s/n is from a band that formed in like 1988. My favorite music is from the early 90's. I listen to a decent amount of 80's bands though. Not much from the 70's really.

I never meant that Operation Ivy was influential and all...I just like them. I am not some huge fan, but I listen to it every so often.

Finally someone who knows something. Most of these people (no offense guys) wouldnt know good old stuff if it hit them in the face. It just seems like bands such as the Early November or Yellowcard are more intriging to them than Rancid or Op Ivy.

Actually, I hate all 4 of those bands. I'd rather just listen to Fugazi or Indian Summer.
