This is probably my favorite Grand Slam to watch for tennis. The tournament is so prestigious, it's great to watch. I love how there is a 'dress code' (how the wear all white)

I remember that was the case, I'm not sure if they changed it not, but I don't believe so. I was kind of upset when they allowed men to wear sleeveless shirts. I know they are much easier to play in (I play collegiate tennis) but I like the tradition.

Anyways, I believe Federer will win this, considering he has always owned on grass.

Who do you think will win?

nfggc10

I think Nadal will finally win this. Federer's shots just aren't going through the court as well as in the past. I still think Roger will best Djokovic and get to the finals but as slow as the courts are playing now I think Nadal can dominate him from the baseline.

I'm hoping Roddick's shoulder holds up so we can get a Nadal/Roddick semi.

Federer is going to win. He only got 4 games from Nadal in the french open finals, which is pathetic. He's gonna get focused and come in and own. If he doesn't beat Nadal on grass, then he can beat him anywhere.

If he doesn't beat Nadal on grass, then he can beat him anywhere.Eh, grass really isn't that big of an advantage for guys like Federer anymore. They're much more comfortable on hard courts which play much faster. Ever since Wimbledon has slowed down the grass and changed balls it's given clay court baseliners a better chance to compete and get through to the 2nd week. Apart from the serve it's basically just an extremely fast clay court.

I think Sharapova is going to winI do as well. The only thing she has to worry about his her serve going off but with Venus coming in out of form she's definitely the favorite. Ivanovic is probably the worst player to be ranked #1 in a long time and I don't expect her to make it to the final or beat Serena for that matter.

i feel like no matter what happens this year, Tennis as a whole wins out.

in years past, its just been "Federer wins again and everyone yawns" with the hopes of an upset victory lurking in everyones mind.

but this year its "the person we think is best player really is the best!" (federer winning), "we have a new best player!" (nadal), or "upset city, no one predicted this!" (djokovic, roddick).

either way, it's fairly exciting.

I still think the best tennis match that I have ever seen was Pete Sampras vs. Andre Aggasi. All 4 sets went into a tiebreaker and no one lost their sever the whole match.

Next in line would have to be Andy Roddick defeated Younes el Aynaoui 4-6, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 21-19 in the semis of the Australian Open.

As far as best matches go I don't see anything topping Sampras beating Agassi in his last ever match as a pro in the US Open finals.

By the way, Djokovic is down 2 sets and a break in the 3rd!! Also, Ivanovic is in deep trouble late in the 2nd set. This could be a huge day in opening up the draw for Federer and a whole half of the draw on the womens side.

trust it to be my two favourite players struggling early. i think maybe the pressures of Ivanovic being the number one seed are starting to show a bit in this match. shes just trying to force it too much, she doesnt have that control and composure she showed throughout Roland Garros. i also think she may have underestimated Dechy a bit. still, fingers crossed she can pull it back

so much for my Sharapova as winner pick. she has really slipped in the past year or so. apart from her absolute domination in Australia, shes gone out in the fourth round or earlier in four of the last five grand slams. thats just not good enough for a player of her calibre

blake lost too, very dissapointing for himYeah and he was up a break I believe early in the 5th. For some reason he has trouble in slams outside of the US Open. His game sets up great for grass where it helps his average serve and then makes his flat forehand even better. I think he relies too much on energy from the fans and if he's not getting it like he does here it seems like he can't dig deep enough by himself.

Wimbledon - tournament of upsetsSharapova's problem is two fold. First, she's still a headcase which contributes to her inconsistent serving and tendency to double fault on key points. Second, her power doesn't seem to be as overwhelming as it once was and if she's just a little off on her timing she can't change her game on the fly.

nfggc10
06/26/08, 12:16 PM
Roddick is so pathetic. I don't think it's possible to play any more defensive than he just did. I mean he was stepping around to hit a backhand on every return. He's just one of the best forehands but he chooses to play that weak topspin crap with it instead of just flattening it out and imposing his power. I would be curious to know the percentage of +4 shot rallies that he actually wins. He only has himself to blame especially since Janko's first serve went to hell the latter part of that 4th set.

Also sad to see US mens tennis in its current recessionPathetic is a relative term in this case but it annoys me to see a guy with so much power on the forehand yet hitting the weaker play with it and even running around it to hit backhands. The shots they showed of his brother during the match were evident that he didn't know what Andy was doing either. I can give him a little break considering his preparation wasn't very good but if he flames out of New York early then he really needs to think about what he's doing. I'd like to see him go back to Brad Gilbert since this defensive approach started right after he dumped him. His brother just doesn't seem to be getting through to him often enough.

He looked like a grand slam contender tonight. That guy's got a future, and I am officially on the bandwagon. If he doesn't win the Most Improved Player award at the ATF awards, it will be a travesty.

This was a very fun match to watch and to, like most, cheer on Britain's son. While Murray has improved much it seems, I don't believe his game is quite ready to be highlighted during grand slam events. If Murray can play like he did during the latter part of the match all the way through, he will be close to being ready. Gasquet made a boatload of mistakes during his eventual fall so it will be interesting to see how much Murray can get under Nadal's skin before his likely fall to the Spaniard.

yeah, in a few years, but i highly doubt she'd beat her as a wild card in one of the first few round next year.

I hate it when the Williams' play each other because afterwards it's like "aww I feel so bad I beat my sister, wah wah wah"

Just everything about those two pisses me right off. Like how they are too lazy, old and occupied by other things like fashion to play tour events but still win Wimbledon every fucking year. I am so ready for them to fuck off and retire.

They won the ladies doubles tournament, as well, I just saw.Well Serena's body takes up half the court so I would've been surprised at the start if they didn't win.

I don't like the Williams because they don't have skill and technique, they are just much bigger and stronger than everyone else.Which is why I wish Henin hadn't retired so soon. She was the only player in the women's game that was worth watching. Now all that's left are the Williams sisters and a bunch of headcases who dominate one day and then get shelled the next while throwing in 15 double faults a match. It's so depleted right now that's it not even interesting.

Such a great final. I'm a little worried for Federer going forward though because this is the worst I've ever seen his backhand look. Not only was he making too many unforced errors on it but it wasn't going through the court well enough. I can't write him off though like many probably will and in my opinion the fast hard courts of the US Open is by far his best surface which is good news. The grass still plays way too slow and even though I'm a Nadal fan he wouldn't make it to the 2nd week had they not changed it after 2001.

I have to say that after Agassi I think Nadal is the best baseline player ever. The things he can do from way off the court and the so few errors he makes it's incredible.

One of the best matches I've ever seen.

I still think Federer is the best and will win the U.S. Open and will probably win the gold medal at the Olympics.

I don't like Nadal or Federer, but I was going for Nadal in this match. He really should have won it earlier though. 5-2 in the tiebreaker and goes on to lose that set.

I agree, Nadal's game from behind the baseline was pretty amazing.

think djokovic will step up for the end of the season.Tough to tell with as much as he's played the last year and a half. He's got a lot of points to defend with his Masters series win and then runner up at the Open so he'll be feeling that pressure. It's such a tough schedule for the guys playing the Olympics since there's back to back Masters series events and then Beijing and then only a week off before the Open.

I think Federer's the huge favorite but other than it's wide open. I'd love to see Roddick make another run and as long as he's not on Fed's half of the draw he should be able to. Skipping the Olympics is a great move and I think anyone going over there is making a mistake.

are there rankings points for olympics?Yea as of this year. I don't get why some players put so much emphasis on it. I'd much rather get the proper rest for the US Open. I guess it would be cool the first time or when it goes to London in 2012 but I'd be avoiding Beijing, especially with the travel seeing as though you couldn't get further away from NYC.

Edit: I don't get why they're awarding points though since you won't be able to defend those points the following year.

Murray is a decent prospect but he's a year younger than Nadal who has won 4 french opens already.
he's not going to be the best player in the world for five years straight, no. he's not that good.

could he win a grand slam? yes.
he'sproven he can beat the best out there. and when he matures a bit more i reckon theres something big to come from him.

He's got no chance on clay, the slow hard court at the Aussie Open, or the fast hard court in New York. The now slower grass is perfect especially for that drop shot which he overplays. I wouldn't be surprised if he won there 2 or 3 years from now once Federer really starts going backwards and he'll only contend with Nadal/Djokovic.

As for Nadal, he really needs to stop playing every clay court tourney leading up to the French. He needs to play Rome and Hamburg and stop going to Monte Carlo and the one in Spain. I know his camp wants him to play more on clay rather than hard courts but he's never gonna make a run in NY unless he cuts down his heavy May/June schedule.

Haha he was supposed to be. He flew to the tournament this morning and told them he was pulling out due to knee soreness. I can't believe he scheduled it regardless though. I also don't understand why he played in Queens right after winning the French. I'd love to see him make it to at least the semis of the Open though since having him in some marquee night matches there would be an incredible scene.

Nadal and Federer are just better than everyone else with Djokovich in third. I'd be very suprised if one of those didn't win it. America is suprisingly weak in the mens game right now.

As for the women's...well who cares?

The only two women I care about in the game are Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova. If they lose then I don't care what happens.
