View Full Version : Worst Screaming You've Heard

I saw a thread where people would post who they thought was the best at it, I'd like to see who people think is the worst screamer. So post the screamers who you think are not so good. Hah.
I don't know who it is, but I think that the OLD Bury Your Dead stuff like the 2002 demo had some of the worst screaming I have ever heard.

I know, its sad. Its going extremely well actually. We've stepped it up and ditched a few of the elements that were lame. We've all but dropped the singing, threw in some blast beats, and ditched cliche' breakdowns. We also got into a pretty big festival around the area, and we are hoping to record a full length in august.

I have a pretty bad fever (idling between 101-102)
sore throat (not strep)
nasal drip (caused the sore throat)
fatigue like crazy (pretty happy I am at the computer for more than 30 min. without going "oh god I have to go lay down")
I literally could not play a show/scream if I wanted to.

I always have a nasal drip, it can help with some of the really weird screaming styles. On the other side, its also probably why I get pneumonia so often.

He wails like a prepubescent child being raped. Again, it fits the tone of the band's music perfectly and I could never imagine anyone else's voice dueling with Jordan's in a Blood Brothers song, but he certainly doesn't possess a good voice in the conventional sense and I love it for that.

I think you could make the argument with the way he sings, but not the way he screams. There are, like I said before, a lot more terrible screamers that fit that discription than he does. In all honesty though, its been a while since I've listened to the Blood Brothers, so I suppose my memory could be fuzzy on it.

He transitions from screaming to singing on a whim, in fact, the only difference it would seem is how loud it is. Furthermore, "there are a lot more terrible screamers" is not a potent argument for his inclusion in this thread. Sure, there's many horrendous screamers that are far worse than Whitney, but that doesn't negate the fact that his voice, singer and screaming, sounds like, to quote Alt Press, "a child being tortured." Again, it's a very good thing. It gives the band a distinct sound and the vocals are perfect for the aural ambiance the band strives for. I love his voice, not despite how bad it is, but because of it.
Regardless, this is a subjective argument. You disagree.

being 15 you should know that the things you say can still seem close minded and offensive. I do vocals (and also play guitar) in a hardcore band. You are saying that a project that I'd say I put more than a considerable amount of effort into is rendered illegitimate because of the style of vocals. Now, I'm not offended by this opinion and I'm not about to go cry as if I was 5 and just dropped my ice cream cone on the sidewalk, but think about the nature of your statement. You don't like screaming. That's a-okay. I listen to a good deal of hardcore and it can get taxing after a while.
However, in terms of music theory, screamed vocals are indeed entirely sound. They also take a good deal of talent, especially to do it right. Seriously, try screaming at the top of your lungs without thinking about how to do it. I bet your throat'll like someone just rammed a porcupine down it. To do long-term screaming as a form of vocals in music, one has to either learn how to take advantage of the diaphragm (I think it's somewhere square above the stomach,) or else find some other magical way to yell and holler without trashing their vocal chords. While some of the poppier bands who employ screaming simply choose to turn the screamer's mic up really really loud so he can just make screaming noises and/or simply "gargle" into the mic, the majority of bands who use screaming have someone who really knows how to manipulate their vocal chords. While I will concede that learning to do this consists of a whooole lot fewer steps than being able to manipulate the pitch of your voice and sing stepwise note melodies, it is by no means something one can do right away.
Lastly, back to theory. Screaming isn't "just noise." It simply takes the stepwise note melody out of the vocals and leaves them as a rhythmic "instrument and a device to get the lyrics across. Since there is still rhythmic "melody", the vocals can still be used to evoke emotion, and even be catchy. Essentially, screamed vocal lines are the same as sung ones, except they only go in rhythm as opposed to rhythm and melody.
...I'm done being encyclopedia britannica now. Hope that shed some light on the other side of the wall for ya :-)

why is that.
i can stand screaming if the band also actualy sings.. but when its all scream then it just becomes annoying.
See the below post.
being 15 you should know that the things you say can still seem close minded and offensive.

Me and a friend were discussing this for a while a few months ago, he didn't have very much experience with screaming but was a vocal performance major and I was pretty much vice versa. I think the conclusion we both came to was that you could do melodies with it, but it would take more practice and time than most people were willing and still sound distinctly harsh (There are multiple random notes floating all over the place, but there is a distinct note that is something of the core of it). I'd disagree with the whoole lot fewer steps as well, the reason for this is that people who scream don't typically change pitch, which plays into the other part of this. Learning one specific method of screaming and note is not the easiest task to accomplish, but as you noted it has far fewer steps than traditional singing. However, this does somewhat ignore the fact that you can produce more than one pitch, but it requires slight variance in technique to produce slightly different notes easily rather than being able to use the same technique and hit every note. To truly master all of the possible sounds you can accomplish probably takes longer than standard singing, although many of them are either too painful, too quiet, or too harsh to be useful. However, all of these qualities are subjective to everyone, so it should probably be judged for everyone themself.
To demonstrate some of the noises I classify under screaming, I'm going to name off a few of the varied techniques and the bands you could hear such a technique under. I may post some youtube videos in a minute. I'm also going to list a short description of the methods I personally use. This post is going to be insanely long, but I'd like to trade information/disagreements about methods anyways. This should also show how complex some of these can be. Keep in mind that everyone has their own ways of doing these, and their own specific scream that suits them best, however almost any of them can be learned by anyone.
Whistle-Register (Jerome's Dream, Deadseraphim)
Probably the most dangerous of all the vocal styles, I find it easiest to produce by basically pointing your voice directly at the roof of your throat. Exceptionally loud, inhuman sounding, and has an odd... robotic harmony about it, similar to guitar feedback. That Jeff of Jerome's Dream blew out his throat from this vocal style is a myth, what actually occurred is he blacked out from the pain involved. He did however consistently throw up blood, despite them only playing 5-10 minute sets. If doing this style, be aware that you will not actually feel the pain and damage it is inflicting upon your vocal cords frequently due to the adrenaline released. This caveat is true of other types of screaming frequently, but nowhere else is it so pronounced as here.
Diaphragm Screaming (Most screamo bands, your "generic scream".)
If you know vocal projection, it is just forcing the air out during this process. If you don't know it, you already do, you just aren't aware of it. It's a fairly easy thing to learn : Try and talk to something on the other side of a room from you and you've projected. That's the easiest way to describe it, but its a bit more intuitive than I make it sound. Once you've figured this out, study the way your diaphragm is moving. The diaphragm is the muscle that allows you to breathe, if you hyperventilate you can easily locate the spot on your body that it is located at. If not, it is located directly beneath your ribcage (if you can see your ribs) wrapping around the bottom of the lungs. Some forms of mystical meditation are also based on this region, I believe. Onto the methodology, once you've realized the location, try projecting a specific note across the room. Now gradually force more air into it from the diaphragm, and you'll eventually reach a "breaking point", where your voice starts to crackle and any more air past this point simply makes your scream more intense and pronounced. It is probably the least painful of all the types of screaming, and the least harmful to your voice. The emotional part Bob was talking about, I can't really describe the technique of that, other than that all types of screaming are somewhat cathartic, and the specific emotion you are attempting to release will likely shape your sound. Angry, Sad, etc. all do have highly different sounds, and I can't describe why. (Some advise trying to sound like you do when you are angry to get to this, and while that does show you how to do it while angry, this style can also be used for sadness or any strong emotion, really). Long, long description.
Throat screaming - (Some members of Pg. 99 on certain songs. Try the unremastered version of Ballad of Circling Vultures if you really wish to hear it done well)
Bad idea, its really quiet and painful. However you can't beat it for harsh sounds and dry raspyness. This is what people do when they have no idea what they are doing, but as you see from the band I have listed, even those who know what they are doing may use it for a different effect. I don't know how to do this one well, but any long , drawn out screams (as in 10 seconds +) are typically going to be this, as it takes far less air. A lot of technique variation in noise comes from capability to mix this and diaphragm together. They are probably the two "normal kinds"
Cauterwailing [screaming, different from the singing]- (Portraits of Past backup on the demos, In Loving Memory)
The most vicious and wet sounding, descriptions vary from drowning in their own blood to old lady being attacked by crows. Its actually quite simple: gargle while screaming. Difficult to do unless you have a certain physiology, though.
Pig Squealing : (bands? I'm unknowledgeable)
Very low pitched, hard to control. I don't know this one
Inhale Screaming : (Nothing good)
Misnomer, this is just breathing wrong. It can make high pitched sounds easily but if used for ordinary sounding things it just sounds weak.
I'm sure I'm missing some, though, if anyone else wishes to share some or how to do the others I didn't (IE pigsquealing). Sorry to cut the last few short, but I have to run something to my idiot of a brother.

Haha, it would take loads of research and wouldn't be a bad biology project, but I'm only a chemistry minor. Screaming and vocals are some of the least understood parts of human vocalization, with most people *thinking* that false cords (two extra large vocal cords used for no other reason) are used for them. Whistle Register you get into the oddity of kids use it but adults don't, so its somewhat nascent but even after they record the interior of the human throat making the noise they have no idea how it is made.

Yeah, it was the one that took me the longest to even come close to figuring out. You never can build up stamina for it though. First time I did it I know it made me bleed from the throat, and it was mostly an accident to find it. Haha, yeah, those screams are dire. I've got to admit that the clean vocals are good though - though I believe that they're done by the guitarist.

He's just too young to be screaming. I'm sure by the time his voice fully changes it should get better with time.
BTW, the first two times I saw them, they were terrible. I saw them last night as this small beat up venue and they sounded awesome. I'm not sure what happened.

I agree. I think it sounds like something that could get better. But right now it's just... not.

He probably grew some bawlz.
At least you can tell when he is screaming... a lot of people can't and assme it is feedback.
Haha that cracked me up.
The clean vocals are pretty good, but the screaming is horrible. I'm sure he'll screw his voice up for life if he keeps on screaming at that age.

How the hell did a 14 year old get into a fairly major touring band anyway? Hell, even blessthefall weren't that young when they started out.

Its all a matter of techinque. If he's doing it right he'll be fine, if not, then I'll be laughing hard when he's 18.

It doesn't sound like he's doing it right. That's what I sound like when I'm out of practice and I know from experience that it just doesn't feel right.

I haven't been able to scream properly for a while now, mainly through lack of practice =/ However, my pterodactyl scream is still spot on haha - and it's fine for my throat too. Still not great for music though, only impressions.

Because it's hardcore to wreck shit, I guess. Like, they would play these billiards halls, and have kids like ripping down the lights and ripping the felt off of the tables. And they lit one place on fire, because they turned off their power, because their singer was punching all these girls in the face.
