I'm going to go ahead and predict this will be up for best picture next year. Micheal Mann is an amazing director whose only bad film was Miami Vice, and it wasn't necessarely bad he just went in the wrong direction with it.

What an amazing cast and story though.

They shot for this movie around my neighborhood a couple months ago since Dillinger's infamous escape was here.

The town went crazy over Depp and I would've gone if I knew Bale was in this.:-(

While I love most of Mann's work, I really hope he switches up his style a bit for this film; I don't see his usual technique translating well to this type of film.

Yea, a lot of girls got to meet Johnny Depp. He seems like a real cool guy though, he took a lot of time to talk with the fans and stuff.

Funny story, my girlfriends Uncle dressed like Jack Sparrow and made a big scene attractin attention to his Travelin Agency. He was arrested and we all laughed, haha.

Yeah its just something I noticed.

Yeah probably, I was kinda dissapointed the trailer didn't show more of him. But the scene where him and Dillinger talk in jail seemed really cool.

I also think the trailer might be misleading, I could be wrong but I thought this movie was mainly suppose to focus on Bales character tracking down Dillinger and less on Dillinger himself. I guess it will try to balance the 2 storylines, hopefully it succeeds.

I just watched the tralier and realized that it will most likely be playing before Watchmen tonight, so I ruined that for myself. Haha. Anyways, I have mixed feelings about the trailer after viewing it once and I don't know why. It has too much of a "modern" feel to it to me. But, I know I will be seeing this because Johnny Depp and Christian Bale are two of my favorite actors and I've only seen one Michael Mann movie I didn't enjoy, any guess what that was? Lol.

bstthngunvrhd7
06/14/09, 12:01 AM
Did anyone else get to see them film or something like that?

I went the first day they were filming in Crown Point, Ind., and stood outside for 9 hrs from a little after 5 a.m. to 2:30ish when I had to go to work. I didn't get to see them flim because they were doing all inside shooting at the old jail where Dillinger escaped when I was there (wow I hope that wasn't a spoiler for people but really it's history so I don't think it should be) so it was neat because people on the crew would come out and tell us that they were going to start filming and needed our cooperation in keeping quiet so it wouldn't show up on the tape, so I think it'll be neat to try and figure out if I was there when they were filming certain scenes.

I didn't get to meet Depp or anything but I got to see him twice when they brought him to film scenes in the old jail and when he left after he was in the jail. I wasn't superclose but I could see him smile and it was just wonderful :) You could tell that he really appreciates his fans :)

But it was neat because where I was standing (and my friend came over later) we got to see a lot of the extras in their costumes and they were really cool--a lot of reporters, some inmates and a few police.

Just a really really neat thing that I'm glad I got to experience.

I know where I'll be on July 1st..I'm crossing my finger for a midnight showing. Especially since I live really close to Northwest Indiana.

You stood out there for that long? Wow..

Yup from 5:15-30ish to 2:30p.m. ish. I had one restroom break and that was only because we knew Johnny Depp had left for that time begin when he and his security guard got into a waiting vehichle and my friend who had shown up an hour or two earlier said she'd save my spot. I stood pretty much the entire time except when I was able to squat down for a few or to shuffle back and forth. I had a pretty good spot close to and occassionally right on the security fence. So had he come out to meet people along that line that day (he did a few of the days he was out there from what I can remember from reading in the paper) I would have got to meet him. But it was a really cool day that I'll never forget :)

But the adreneline kinda wore off by the time I got to work so I was just eh, lol. but peppy but drained. but it was worth it.

Saw this last night. It's a very good film, and Depp is excellent. It's not great, but it's a very sold 2.5 hours, and some of the shootouts are just edge-of-your-seat awesome. I definitely don't understand the lukewarm critical response, because it's definitely a high quality, well made film.

jbaseball44
07/02/09, 09:33 AM

I left the theater thinking "that was really good but I am underwhelmed by it". While it had things I really enjoyed it, it also had it's fair share of things I felt could have been done better.

The acting was hit-and-miss. Johnny Depp delivered a solid performance as Christine Bale yet put in a sub-par performance. Billy Crudup did a nice job and Marion Cotillard probably delivered the best performance. It was nice to see Giovini Rabasi (sp?) again even if it was for very little time. The rest of the cast was mostly pretty 'meh'.

I enjoyed the feel of the movie and the way it was shot - the mix of a hand-held camera and the HD camera was something I liked and I felt like it was done well.

The back-story/history/development of the main characters was quite lacking and left quite a bit to desire and I also know the movie isn't 100% accurate (essp. the ending), which you'll have with any movie "based" on a true story. A more development on the characters would have been nice.

Overall, I really didi it enjoy and I'd like to see it again. For now I give it a 7-8/10

It looks overdone. There were definately scenes where the way the film had been shot had a detrimental effect on the film in my opinion, not massively but enough to make you think a scene wasn't quite right.

I'd agree with most of this. I thought there were too many random mobsters introduced for about 10 seconds only to get guuned down later on with no filling of the characters. I'd have prefered to have had the film concentrate on a smaller group but actually flesh the characters out a bit.

I was really looking forward to this movie, now, not so much considering the bad reviews I have seen and from people telling me it wasn't that good.

For now I give it a 7-8/10
Christine Bale? shut the fuck up Bruce

I thought Bale was good, I don't get why Billie liked Johnny-he was a dick who didn't say anything of substance to her, was she that dumb? I'm also not entirely sure on the historical details but Bale and Depp were like fucking superheroes, I'm pretty sure someone shot point black at Bale and he wasn't touched at all-what the fuck

mm I liked the overall movie, johnny was hot as well as Bale. It made me want to rob a bank.

I wish there was a bit more oomf, there were some parts that were lacking.

Okay, that sounds about like what I was expecting. Good, but could've been better. I'll probably check it out.

Really enjoyed this film, but why on Earth would they change the "lady in red?" It's one of the most famous parts of the story!

Exactly what I thought! I enjoyed the movie though. It kept me interested. Though the whole time I was watching I couldn't get over the HD over film. It just looked wierd to me. I agree that they should have had better character development. I would forget constantly who everyone was and didn't care because they would just die a minute later.

Really enjoyed this film, but why on Earth would they change the "lady in red?" It's one of the most famous parts of the story!"Mann is fearless with his research. If I mention the Lady in Red, Anna Sage (Branka Katic), who betrayed Dillinger outside the Biograph when the movie was over, how do you picture her? I do too. We are wrong. In real life she was wearing a white blouse and an orange skirt, and she does in the movie. John Ford once said, When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. This may be a case where he was right. Mann might have been wise to decide against the orange and white and just break down and give Anna Sage a red dress."

The shoot out scenes were he only thing going for this movie. The acting was very plain. I found some scenes were to short. Not enough justice done for Christian Bales character, he was a very disturbed individual and it just seemed like the audience really does not get to see this. I was very disappointed. 5/10

This was pretty average. Nothing great performance wise. I enjoyed it but would not watch it again. The characterization on Melvin Purxis was non-existant.

Where is that quote from? I'd like to know so I can research further.

I thought Depp and Cotillard were both excellent. I agree that neither Bale, nor the script he was given to work with, did anything for his character though.

They were good, but I expected a lot better. and yeah, Bale wasn't a character at all, just an antagonist for Depp. They really could have beefed up his character.

I really enjoyed watching Depp actually play a character straight for once. It feels like he hasn't done it in awhile. His most notable recent roles have been quite over the top and theatrical, and he really struck me as good in this film.

Yeah I can definitely agree with you there. Best part of the film IMO was when he walked into the Dillinger investigation room and asked the guys what the score of the baseball game was. He seemed so reckless and suave at the same time there, I loved it. I agree with you, I hope Depp gets into some meatier stuff.

Haha, yeah I loved that part. It definitely wasn't the greatest movie ever, but I definitely enjoyed it for what it was. I wasn't really disappointed either, so I guess I got more or less what I expect to.

I work at a movie theatre and this was the first time I've had to pay for a movie in awhile, my boss took away our free movie privileges. First thing I said to my friend was "that wasn't worth 7.50"

Yeah, one of my friends didn't like it much either. And few movies are actually worth that much, but I don't go to the theatre that often, so it didnt bug me much.

The characters are really shallow, there is little character development, and the bank robbing scenes are played so randomly that they're just shoot-em scenes that don't explain at all what's going on or where it is. I read the book before watching the movie, and the movie just hops around each scene without any real transition.

Just watched and completely dug it. Mann always has beautiful cinematography and this one was no different. People are saying Bale didn't do much or have much to work with but I think that was sort of the point. He is almost a robot in the way he approached his job and the more he's involved, the more he's sees how dirty he's becoming to get Dillinger. You see a shift in his performance as the film moves forward and the last time we see him on screen.

It did take me awhile to feel invested in a lot of the characters, but I thought the movie built up tension well and that's probably what I left with when it was over.
