i would definitely like to see them move odom. his contract coming off the books after next season makes him a pretty valuable player on the trade market.
i read that there was a potential odom for richard jefferson in place last offseason, and the deal was shelved. i wouldn't mind them revisiting that.
wallace would be interesting, but i'm a little concerned about how his game would work alongside kobe. same goes for jefferson in a sense. there's also talk of them picking up ron artest for the mid-level exception, and while artest is a lunatic, i think his game would mesh well with kobe, gasol and bynum, and give them some much needed toughness.

a) yes. i think they'll be great next year. they're young, bynum and ariza will be healthy, and kobe's gonna be that much hungrier. shaq should focus on getting in shape and trying to make the last few years of his career as good as they can possibly be, instead of dissing kobe. kobe's moved on. why can't shaq? because he knows he's slipping. he needs to realize it's not 2000 anymore. his day has come and gone. kobe has rings in his future. shaq doesn't. unless he gravy trains his way to another one.

The real first question: Do you judge pitcher's values on the number of wins they accumulate or their other numbers like strikeouts/walks/ground ball rates?
k/9, bb/9, whip, era, gb rates, etc.
wins are an overvalued stat.

let's hear your take on the angels outfield situation, all the massive contracts, and what the future of the team holds for the next 3-5 years.
i'm definitely worried. the matthews contract is brutal and hunter's contract is brutal as well. vlad is beginning his decline (despite his june numbers), GA is done (i hope they don't extend him), and they don't have many solid OF prospects in the minors outside of peter bourjos who is still a ways away.
i like the outlook for this year and the next, and then things start to get a little scary.

Whats your stance on sabermetrics vs. scouting?
i could write an essay on this, but i'll keep it short.
i think sabermetrics are incredibly valuable, and that ignoring them or writing them off as "stat geek garbage" is incredibly closed-minded. i also think scouting is incredibly valuable too.
i think the huge problem with the "old guard", is that they feel that the two are mutually exclusive. i just can't understand why anyone who would want to be as educated as possible on a subject would refuse to learn about new ways to evaluate players and teams.
it seems like old school scouts and coaches are afraid they'll lose their jobs to a computer (which will never happen).
it also frustrates me to no end that people automatically think that if you value sabermetrics that you don't "watch games".

'Italy is beast' is not a reason for them not winning the game, haha. I'm an Italian fan also but watching the game, Spain set the rhythm for the whole game. Camoranesi's chance was the only real shot they had to score. Toni might have had a chance too I can't remember.
It was the first thing that came to mind :].
Spain was really good, yes. They kept it 0-0 the whole time, which meant they were equally as good. Spain's penalty kicks took Italy by storm. Their keeper is too good ( i mentioned him too many times ) and their kickers had too much going. By the end i knew italy was out, i just didn't want to believe it.

ya he's basically nothing but a trade piece now.
Any trade rumor in the past two years has had Reyes's name attached to it. You are absolutely correct. I love the guy but its time for him to go.

It doesn't matter anyway. Podolski is just going to thrash everyone.
Ah...polish Podolski...if he underestimates Turkey, he's done for. Otherwise, he's probably going to be the king of Euro2008.

yeah they needed to do something, but it just seemed like they wanted to get it to pks and trust in buffon
Bad strategy.
Buffon is great, but I find that entire strategy flawed.

Wrong. And I know, I played the goddamn game for 15 years...

whats harder? pitching or hitting?
Pitchers have the advantage of knowing what they're going to throw, but many fail at command or stuff and end up journey men or relief men.
Hitters seem to be able to make it more at league average since there is more chances for them than pitchers, but as above, do not have the benefit of knowing whats being thrown at them.
Riley, what are your thoughts on the Angels being known as Los Angeles of Anaheim?
On a side note both Paul Loduca and Vlad have left the game w/ the flu.

me too, no matter how good your keeper is, its still basically a coin flip if your keeper dives in the right dirrection. after that he still needs to make the save

What position did you play. I looked up the Pepperdine media guide and see you only played in 95.
i redshirted in 94, and was working at ss.
i had 10 AB's in 95, working at 3b, didn't get along with my coach, had 3 friends die in a car accident (one was my best friend and freshman roommate at pepperdine in 94), and got frustrated and bailed.
played a year at a jc after that and quit after transferring to long beach state.

The way Spain played against Italy will not work against Russia who will crush them if they don't shape up. So no, I don't think so, not yet anyway.

i don't care what they're called. they could be called the Angels Stadium Gene Autry Way 57 Freeway Adjacent Orange County/Los Angeles California Angels of the United States on Earth, and i'd still love them.
i just can't see them fitting that on a t-shirt though.
