i checked them out a while ago, and i don't remember hating them. still haven't gotten around to getting an album though.
The album is nothing spectacular, the only time I've ever spun it was during a house party. Their really at their best live, so much fun with a room of people dancing.

Also their lead singer has to be a complete drug addict, the dude looks so incredibly unhealthy.

We had a great time :shrug: It's clear they're drugged out of their mind on stage, so really gives a fuck? We threw a large plastic frog around the audience, and he sang the last verse of kids while mouthing the words on a puppet. It was stupid but... who cares, their shows are about having a good time and it would be ridiculous to expect these kids to be serious about anything when they're willing to just play the backing tracks on an iPod and sing over them.

why talk about something you have no idea about? smoking pot does not mean you're a 'hippie', and definitely does not mean you are part of any type of movement whatsoever. and anyway, the way they live their lives shouldn't affect whether or not you listen to their music or enjoy their shows. it's about the music, not how entertaining they are or aren't.

Weekend Warrior - is "Hotel California" but so much worse.
The Youth - would be cool if someone else played it. the whole thing sounds like it was mixed mastered than ran through a compressor.
Time To Pretend - is a really good pop song and the melody is great. but this is the best this band will probably be able to do.
Pieces of What - awful lyrics. like Animal Collective doing an improvised impression of David Bowie when they were recording Sung Tongs.

ive read about this band and the word Psychedelic comes up way too often. this band is in no way psychedelic from what i can tell.

but if you like this and want to listen to something much better, check out Empire of the Sun or the Animal Collective album's Sun Tongs and Feels

I went to the Treasure Island Music Festival on Saturday and they were headlining. To be completely honest, I wasn't too impressed. I listened to the record a lot this year and it definitely grew on me so I was interested in seeing how it would translate in an outdoor setting. They seemed very bored and didn't get the crowd as amped up as they should have considering they were the headliners AND their show followed MSTRKRFT's. It was a huge disappointment and the vast majority left after they played (and butchered) "Kids." The first two songs were strong but it went downhill from there.

Here's video proof (http://www.spinearth.tv/report/mgmt-electrify-treasure-island-music-festival) of them performing "Kids" from Saturday night. You can decide for yourself but in my opinion, they definitely don't live up to their hype.

The only song I can really enjoy of theirs is "Pursuit of Happiness," their collaboration with Kid Cudi from his album, and that's because black people have awesome voices. Racial stereotypes are cool if they're compliments, right? I'm not looking forward to my friends dropping their Vampire Weekend obsession to hype up Congratulations.

I don't know. Maybe it is better than some of the songs from last album. Honestly, the only songs I remember from my few listens are "Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel," and "Kids." This just feels like more of the same, in a roundabout sort of way. Sure, it sounds different in some ways, but they still just feel like another boring "indie" band with less depth than something like Boxer and weaker hooks than something like Kelly Clarkson, and also not enough to personally relate to for me to care. Songs like "Time to Pretend" were at least catchier, and at least they remind me of certain friends of mine that love this band and times we had last spring and summer. The fact that I'm hearing this song right in the midst of a new Gorillaz album certainly doesn't help, as I can get from them everything I actually enjoy about MGMT and more.

i listened to it a bunch of times and i like a few songs but overall it just feels like they tried too hard to not make another "kids" or "electric feel" that they lost most of what makes them enjoyable.
All of the tracks sound pretty alike.

But neither of the things I just said apply to me/are true. Heh. Just because language is flawed and we can never accurately transcribe how we feel doesn't mean language is all that bad, I suppose.

I guess this applies more for the liberal arts but I just sort of read/listen/discuss stuff and "get it," I don't know how else to explain. Maybe it's the intro classes right now that are killing me, school will probably get less boring as the subject matter becomes more advanced.

Anyway, music, haha.
