another wonderful talent from the depths of nz. hollie can sing, damn she can really sing. sing big, high, deep, long, loud, you name it, beautiful vocal range. for years now, she's worked with some of nz's greatest roots names, like trinity roots, (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=295793)& john mcglashan & the mt raskil preservation society on this wonderful number (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8QGY494V)
her album long player was released last year which featured a lot of guest appearances from her very talented friends such as lisa tomlins (fat freddy's drop (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=281192)), rio hemopo (trinity roots (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=295793)& breaks co-op). an album full of wonderful vocal gusto & clever arrangements, full of jazz-blues-soul-funk prowess & the good old-fashioned roots music values
this is the beginning of something special. check some tunes (http://www.myspace.com/holliesmithmusic)
any fans, share some love & discussion?

roots music enthusiasts who would truly appreciate what hollie is doing & has set out to do with her music. that's not a bad album, little celtic, but she was only 16 when she recorded that. the growth between then & now (working with some of the countries greatest roots artists probably helped haha) is crazy
i was an hour-ish, then i came home to make some dinner, came online & the internet everywhere was dead

i only have a few songs i've found from her so far. the only albums i know of are the ones on last.fm. there's really nothing on the wikipedia page for her or anything, and she's not big here but she should be... don't find a voice like that too often.
and i'm about to make some coffee and wake up haha, but i don't want to call and knock you offline/get a busy tone or anything.

she only has a couple & the odd ep. but between then & now she focused more on performing live with soo many greats, she's pretty respected. her performances with this (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=281732) live only band are so captivating
haha fair cop, i'm (well should be) on my way to the haystack, but i can't stop reading paul caffyn's thrilling journey detailed in his book "dreamtime voyage"

holy crap! i've been trying to find their albums for what seems like FOREVER haha. you need a faster internet connection, i'm serious. does she have any live albums as well?
haha i felt bad, it just kind of cut off and then the recording was like 'hang up, you have no time left!'.

nah just the material with fly my pretties. she recorded with trinity roots on their best album, home, land & sea & now just tours alone. & by alone i mean supporting her own material, while members of all your favourite kiwi roots/ska bands ask her if they can play with her as her on tour band
haha not to worry, i thought that'd be the case & the subsequent bath (with beethoven in my ear) was very relaxing

long player has such a great... i'd probably say organic, rather than live, feel to it anyway. that supplemented with actually seeing her live makes for one hell of a listening pleasure haha. but yea i'm one of probably 4 people on ap that is a huge fan of live recordings
that tune "bathe in the river" was once played live with soo many awesome nz musicians. it started on a pitch black stage, only a small light shone on hollie on vocals & who else but timbo on piano, then the lights kicked in the mt rascal preservation society maori choir joint in, with the legendary don mcglashan, the boys from fat freddy's drop, trinity roots, the black seeds, katchafire, salmonella dub & soo many more. one of the most spectacular live events ever
it was a cold winters day, can't blame a fella

live music is what it's about! anyone that doesn't prefer live music to studio versions has no idea what they're missing. it's absolutely mindblowing the amount of people i hear tell me they'll never go to a show because it's 'too loud' or 'boring'. if you think a show by a band you like is boring, you're listening to the wrong kinds of music haha.
i would love to be able to see her.. and fat freddy's drop... and the black seeds hahah. i've only heard the version you posted though.
whatever you say!

completely agree, live music is music in it's purist form, it's so natural & beautiful. you're actually experiencing art, love it. seeing people like hollie live is one of today's greatest exemplars
that version was recorded somewhere, but never released on any album, there was like 40 people on stage performing that number
last time i saw the black seeds that started at about 9:30-10pm & finished at about 1:50 am. i love to groove, but damn i was shattered after that haha

light from a distant shore came today, and i'm absolutely loving it. i'm only about halfway through but it's definitely so good, especially for her being so young while recording this. it's really beautiful, and i love the celtic sound to it.

good stuff, but nothing on her last album, long player. which also leaves sooo much room to develop & experiment. hopefully she'll be back in the studio sooner rather than later

so good, hollie was only 16 when she recorded that. her more recent long player is even better, but apparently pretty tricky to track down over there
i can't wait to see where she goes with a new album. i could see a number of big players in roots music being interested in playing on it (if she'll let them haha)

Guess who's now working with the same people in the studio that Erykah Badu, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Common etc... also use... Let's see what happens.

New song "Mamma" can be heard in the latest video over at mofresh (http://www.mofresh.co.nz/). This is perhaps my most highly anticipated albums to come out later this year. You guys really need to get in on this, for your own musical enjoyment & benefit, this is one talent you don't want to ignore & miss. Once the new album comes, expect to hear a lot about her from me all the time haha.

A couple new tunes from the new album, Humour & the Misfortune of Others , can now be heard on Hollie's myspace.

The album was released on the 15th, & is one I've been really looking forward to. So no doubt I'll be back in here soon with some thoughts on it once it begins to digest.

I don't care that it's only me talking to myself over & over in this thread at this point. The new album is sooo damn good, & become a staple listen in my music rotations since it's release. The more I listen, the more it opens up to me.
Definitely check it out guys.
