there's two ways to look at this.
Studio Albums:
- Mayer's latest was outstanding
- 2 of Matthews last 3 albums have been subpar/atrocious. (excluding Some Devil)
*the best DMB is better than the best JM
Live Performances:
- Mayer seems to have a tough time switching up setlists from show to show, but is incredibly gifted on the guitar and certainly a better musican than Matthews (plus Mayer is very funny)
- Matthews (don't get me wrong) is very good at what he does, but it is the rest of the band that sets this concert apart from a John Mayer concert. If you flat-out love music you will find these guys are incredible (each other member of the band is as talented at what they do as Mayer is on the guitar) And Dave Matthews might just be the weirdest man i have ever heard speak, but its only the best kind of wierd... the quirky, peculiar kind; and in the end, i find more entertaining than Mayer simply based on him being totally unpredictable. Also, set lists change every single night. And when it comes to improvisation, Dave Matthews is as good as it gets
i prefer Dave Matthews, but i like both very much.
(i was at the free virginia tech concert last year when Mayer came on stage to play with DMB, he took the mic and said "I would not be who I am today if it were not for Dave Matthews")

I pretty much agree with all that. Stand Up and Everyday were not good at all, they had a few decent songs, but overall the albums were poor. Mayer has had three great albums, however they don't match up to DMB's best albums (Crash and UTTAD).
I haven't seen Mayer live, so I can't judge him based upon that. I've seen DMB three times, with each time being better than the previous. I just saw them in Scranton and it was the best I've seen them. They have so much energy and skill, they just keep the crowd wanting more. They also play at least 2-hour sets, so to keep up that energy throughout the whole show is a great feat. Their set-list changes with each show, which I love, and they are just incredible musicians. They appeal to such a wide-range of ages; I've seen 7-year olds and I've seen 60-year olds attending their shows. I just have such a good time attending one of their concerts.
So, yes I choose Dave Matthews.
I never really liked Dave Matthews. John Mayer all the way.

as far as live goes, the last two John Mayer live records (Try!, and Where the Light is) have both been fantastic.
I think John Mayer is really coming into his own. His first records weren't that great but he has really written some great songs in the last few years.

I grew up listening to Dave Matthews, and his music is like burned in my soul. So I'll go with him.
However, John Mayer is freaking awesome, so much talent.

My dad likes Dave Matthews, and I spent many a car trip listening to him, but I just couldn't ever get into it. But John Mayer, on the other hand, I like him. I actually recommended him to my father and now instead of listening to DMB we can listen to John Mayer, haha.

i didnt really think about anything except for what they are like on their own. i have a bunch of live acoustic albums from both of them (just themselves) and they are all insane.. but i think dave beats him out

I find it pretty sad that there is such a lack of Dave love here. I love John, don't get me wrong. But when it comes down to it, Dave's overplayed songs are still above John's overplayed songs (Crash Into Me is epic. Still waiting for a John song to hit me harder than that song did.)
Plus, I grew up listening to Dave. In retrospect, John's a baby. He's got the potential to be as great as Dave, but he's just not there yet.

Honestly, I'm pretty surprised Dave got that many votes. Dave gets so much hate here and most of it is not justified. John is extremely talented, one of the best guitarists of our time, but I think Dave is the better songwriter, performer, and just more seasoned.

I find it hard to compare them. John is an individual artist, Dave comes with a family. If you go to a DMB concert, you'll see that Dave lets the rest of his crew shine in the spotlight with solo's...Boyd, Carter, LeRoi, all of them...
Hands down I'd go with Matthews. I've been to JM and DMB live both a few times, and I prefer DMB over JM any day. He's probably the weirdest guy on the face of the planet. But he's brilliant. Maybe Dave's recent stuff hasn't been as great as "Crash" or JM's recent album, but at least it shut up the people that said DMB plays the same type of music over and over again..

John mayer has a handful of musicians that tour with him and also the other 2/3 of the John Mayer trio so neither performer is really an individual artist.
