View Full Version : Will Weezer Ever Make A Good Album Again

Im talking head to toe...top to bottom...Track 1 to Track 10.... a good solid album all the way through?
It has been almost 12 years since Pinkerton, the last real solid CD from Weezer. The Red Album, although featured probably 2 or 3 really solid/good songs, for the most part left me feeling flat and dissapointed.
So...haha will Weezer ever be good again?

No.
Isn't it a bit obvious that they'll never after a load of mediocre/bad albums?

Weezer could have thrown in the towel the day they finished production on the Blue Album and I would be a much happier guy. Every other song after that is just another song, just more songs by Weezer. Like, thanks for more songs that I won't listen to, guys! Really!

Pinkerton is so misguided and confused, even Wikipedia can't determine which Rolling Stone review to display. Had Maladroit come out in its place, I guarantee it would be the "gateway breakthrough album" with darker, more brooding tones (if they were that good of musicians) and introspective candid confessions as lyrics (if Rivers were that good of a lyricist). Suffice it to say I never bought into the Pinkerton hype.

I wish after pinkerton they stopped making music. They need to give up, it's overkill.

Why.. so.. serious? You're an idiot if you can't appreciate perfectly written pop music. To all you haters: Jump OFF the "Weezer-sucks-after-pinkerton" bandwagon and form an opinion yourself! If the post-pinkerton albums were released by any other pop/rock group, they would be considered exceptional, if not amazing. And as for the claim that they aren't good musicians...melody my friend! melody! In terms of music theory, these songs are perfect. And god are they catchy. You should praise Rivers for writing this music. He has influenced hoards of people to learn music and be analytical about pop music. You wouldn't have heard of half the bands you listen to if it were not for Weezer (this including post-pinkerton albums). Have a little loyalty and for Joe Pesci's sake, take a leap of faith off the bandwagon and admit these albums are at least enjoyable. "You either die a hero [pinkerton] or live long enough to become the villian [red album]."
No, I don't think they will. I think they could, but I don't think they care about it that much anymore.

I mean hey, they have two really great records, a lot of bands don't even get one. They probably won't make another good album, but I don't consider it a total loss when the majority of acts can't even come up with anything good, ever.

If you can't tell the difference in quality between the Blue and Pinkerton with the post-Pinkerton albums then you obviously don't fully understand the first two. Yeah, maybe Green, Maladroit, and Make Believe would've been better if they were from another band. In fact, if some random band had debuted with Red, I'm sure it would've been a huge hit. But Weezer isn't some random band. Their first two albums are, arguably, two of the very best discs of the 90's and there's nothing wrong with expecting better from a band.
Now, to answer the thread question, maybe. Red was a big step up from Make Believe so they could be on their way back to form. Or, maybe they're mediocre for good.

Wrong. The immaturity of Pinkerton is one of the best things about it. The emotions and feelings of adolescence and young adulthood are captured perfectly on Pinkerton. I love that. In trying to create a more introspective album, Rivers made one EVERYONE could relate to. [/pinkerton hype].

Count me in. I am the most vocal Pinkerton-hater on this site. And it's really just because Blue is my favorite album of all time (not necessarily best, just favorite).
But it's weird. When I talk to my friends, roommates, people in real life etc. the Blue Album is highly revered and hardly anyone even considers Pinkerton a credible release. However, when I see all of the kids on the internetz that praise Pinkerton I feel like Ed Norton in Fight Club when everyone's saying "His name is Robert Paulsen..."

I like the Red Album. You're right, it's very experimental compared to the other Weezer records but different doesn't equal better. Honestly, I would trade ten "experimental" Weezer records just to get one more album as good as Pinkerton, which not only defines it's genre, but defines an entire period of life for many of the fans of that genre. With that in mind, no, I've decided that I don't think Weezer will ever make another record as good as Blue or Pinkerton. Most of us here and young and right now, those two albums perfectly describe the place where we are in our lives right now. Maybe in twenty or thirty years, we'll give Red another spin and be able to relate to it more and find it more enjoyable but for now, Pinkerton easily goes down as the greatest album this genre has ever put out.
i think it's great how experimental Red was. To me it feels like a warm up for something truly grand.
Yeah, it's tentatively named the Rainbow Album. It's about Rivers' struggle with coming out of the closet and trying to keep his moustache in line along the way. By far the most epic thing he has and will ever write.

Wrong. Their first two albums are solid, end to end. They began faltering once they released Green, which is a pop record with some stale tunes on it. Maladroit, in my opinion, is their next best record - not one song is bad on there. The b-sides are even better.
Make Believe isn't as bad as many claim it to be, but their last two releases have left me less than enthused.

I'm guessing because they were either too young to appreciate the Green album when it was released or they rightly associate it with the beginning of the end. In my book, it's their third best album, behind Pinkerton and Blue.

why does everybody hate the green album? nobody can honestly tell me they don't tap their feet to at least a few of those songs. if you say you don't, you're a fucking liar. it may be more 'poppy', or whatever, but i'll listen to the green album before any other trash on the radio or any other degrading "rock" created in the past 10+ years.
I never said I hate it. There are simply a few tracks I didn't really like. "Smile," "O Girlfriend" and "Island in the Sun" are pop numbers I'm not particularly fond of, but I enjoy the rest a great deal. And even then, I don't dislike those three songs that much even.
If you recognized my Weezer fandom, you would know how I feel about this band, and how they are not only one of my absolute all-time favorites, but that until Red came out, there were really no songs I hated. I will say I am more of an admirer of their b-sides than much of their album material.
I'm guessing because they were either too young to appreciate the Green album when it was released or they rightly associate it with the beginning of the end. In my book, it's their third best album, behind Pinkerton and Blue.
I think it's a fair assumption to say after Blue and Pinkerton, the lines become blurry to each individual Weezer fan as to where each album falls.

I can understand that, but yet it still boggles my mind. I can appreciate a few songs off of each of the other releases, but Green was filled with solid, short, punchy pop songs.

Part of the problem for me is, it just seemed almost too poppy. I don't hate it or even dislike it at any length - it just doesn't hit me like others have.
"Knock-Down Drag-Out" and "Simple Pages" are awesome though - I still have an affection for those songs.

I don't really listen to any Weezer. I tried getting into both Blue and Pinkerton, but none of them really had any lasting value with me... in my opinion both of those are extremely overrated.

Getting into Pinkerton for the first time was so awesome. Across the Sea immediately shattered everything I thought I knew about the band and made me a fan right there. Ah, memories.

One word: No.
Shitty band releases two good albums, then falls down into, well, shity-ness.

thinking about it I think I agree with you. Most people look at it as good band released 2 good albums, and is now past their prime, but i guess both points could be right. But I've never heard someone phrase it the way you did.
Cryptopsy did pretty much the same thing Weezer did, release about 2 good albums, then went back to being shitty.
Pinkerton and Blue are complete flukes, like Crytopsys None So Vile and Whisper Conspiracy.

I got the Red Album today for some reason. Let down, why am I not surprised?
Everybody Get Dangerous maybe the worst Weezer song ever.

Greatest Man Who ever Lived is their best song since Pinkerton

Will Weezer Ever Make A Good Album Again?
Sadly I doubt it.

Lets all just keep bitching about how Pinkerton was sooo good. The irony is you all keep saying weezer is beating a dead horse by releasing mediocre albums but really you all are beating a dead horse by repeatedly bitching about how the release mediocre albums. Weezer has changed. If you don't like the material after Pinkerton, don't listen to it. They're not the same band. Accept it, buy yourself a nice dress and move on.

= lyrics to my next ballad "Pinkerton Blues" about star crossed lovers who need to find the love they have for each other before their differing tastes in Weezer tear them apart.
I'll get started on that now.
