The Constitution does not permit "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home," Scalia said. The court also struck down Washington's requirement that firearms be equipped with trigger locks or kept disassembled, but left intact the licensing of guns.
Scalia noted that the handgun is Americans' preferred weapon of self-defense in part because "it can be pointed at a burglar with one hand while the other hand dials the police."

I dont know whether to laugh or cry at that last line. This is just another example in a long list of them that EVERYONE running this country is out of touch with the general public.

Scalia opinions are always entertaining.

70 years is far to long of a gap for the court to take up such an important issue. Its a shame the ruling was so close, though.

I will never understand how 'Militia' is explained away, or how the security of the state makes a gigantic leap to the security of the individual.

Merriam Webster entry:

1 a: a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency b: a body of citizens organized for military service

2: the whole body of able-bodied male citizens declared by law as being subject to call to military service.

Apparently women are not allowed to own guns.

Cambridge entry:

a military force which only operates for some of the time and whose members often have other jobs.

Encarta entry:

1. soldiers who are also civilians: an army of soldiers who are civilians but take military training and can serve full-time during emergencies

2. reserve military force: a reserve army that is not part of the regular armed forces but can be called up in an emergency

3. unauthorized quasi-military group: an unauthorized group of people who arm themselves and conduct quasi-military training. This being the most liberal definition of the word I have found

I don't understand how guns make a person feel safe. They do the opposite for me.

I wasn't talking about the ruling itself, I was talking about the last line of the quote. Because, I don't know about you, but when my house is robbed, I'm really worried about multi-tasking, i.e. scaring a robber with my gun, dialing the cops, and making sure the robber doesn't attack me/run away. And I'm supposed to do this with a cool and logical reason.

Does Scalia this is like a B movie, where the robber isn't armed himself, and then when caught by someone at home, the thief goes "Oh, Drat! Foiled again!" and they just freeze and willingly let the cops come?

If that is somehow a "normal" scenario, then haul me off to the psych ward, because I've never seen/heard anything ever like that.

They don't particularly make me feel safe, but it makes me feel less than safe when I look around and only the police have guns.
note : I don't own a gun, and the only thing I know how to use is a bow, and even that I haven't done in probably 8 years.

http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=343&sid=1429208 EVERYONE running this country is out of touch with the general public.

Are you implying that the general public is against gun ownership and individual freedoms? Pot. Kettle. Black. I think you are the one out of touch.

EDIT: Sorry, I guess I responded without reading any further. Ironically, dialing 911 if you have opportunity while confronting an intruder is taught in all basic CPL classes. It is a bit ridiculous.
