Also, it acts as a noun. For example, "He likes riding his bike," where "riding" is the object of the sentence, rather than the verb.

Yeah a gerund is not a verb as a larger part of a sentence. For example "I was walking when I saw a dog". In this case "walking" is the gerund and it acts as a noun where "saw" is the the verb. The gerund may look like the verb, but it is not. It usually ends in -ing.

In that sentence, "walking" might actually be a verb (part of "was walking"), but I'm not entirely sure. I thought gerunds were only when it's the subject ("Walking the dog is fun") or object ("He likes walking the dog") of the sentence. Maybe?

You're correct. "Was walking" is the past progressive (I'm taking that term from my high school Spanish classes) form of "to walk". Gerunds basically function as nouns.

"When I saw a dog" is unnecessary to the complete thought of the sentence, so it can be overlooked. The other guys were right in gerunds being words formed from verbs acting as subjects or objects. "Was walking" is the verb of the sentence. It is telling what "I" did.

We have bigger issues, you only needed ONE exclamation mark in the title. And 'probs' isn't a word. And no need for ellipses...

After high school? After grade school you never have to worry about this stuff again. I think the last time I did anything related to grammar was in like 7th grade.
