you can accept two definitions of punk. if you want to go for a broader one it defines the songwriting with integrity and originality, where it's about the artistic merit of the music, which is not molded to fit the melody, or marketability. it also defines a mostly DIY ethic and a mentality which really doesnt hold money in high regard in comparison to the passion of writing music intrinsically. it is not punk as a genre, it is punk in the way by which this site is called absolutepunk.net, and is used to basically describe the aesthetic of most underground music.
