Robot Love Story - Remember the Way You Used to Be
Record Label: Action City Records
Release Date: May 27, 2008
Summer evenings are perfect for driving with windows down, music turned up loud, singing along raucously and out of tune with friends. Robot Love Story wrote the perfect record for this activity, as the hooks and power-pop are just what the doctor ordered for a sunburn recovery drive. This Chicago five-piece are ready to embrace the pop-rock roots of their hometown and are ready to be embraced by teens everywhere.
The first song off the free EP (available on their myspace), "Picture Frames," starts off with a well-blended intro until the vocals kick in and you know you’re in for a fun little ride. Once the chorus starts up, you can almost hear the crowd singing along as the words flow "Just let go / C’mon and give her up / 'Cause you know / That love was meant for us."
"Drowning" is a typical pop-rock song in that it is in response to a failed relationship, however, when the dual-vocals overlap in the third verse it is easily the highlight of the EP as one vocalist sings "My skin is growing cold / The water’s swallowing me whole," as the other intones, "I’d rather sink than swim / Like loving arms, you draw me in."
The final song, as a whole, is the best song as a whole on the EP. "North By Northwest" starts with an intro that reminds me immediately of The Spill Canvas, and when the song kicks into full gear midway through the verse, one can just feel their hand out the window, singing along. The chorus begs to be sung out loud as "Goodnight sweet lover / I will hold you close / Even when you’re not around / I’ve got some memories / They’re of you and me” rolls out the speakers and into the night sky.
Robot Love Story are begging to break out into the pop-rock saturated crowd with their brand of power-pop. This Chicago five-piece has a bright future, especially with their hometown’s prowess in launching their hometown bands into the big scene. If you enjoy long drives listening to music loudly, this is the debut EP for you.
