What are your favorites? What makes you think they had a long and successful career? Do you see any similiar characteristics between these artists? Which artists who have been around for ten years or so do you think could last that long?

A willingness to change their music with the times without changing their character or selling out. And then, when it's all done and over with, a willingness to return to their roots and still deliver.

What a good way of putting it. This what we all sort of wish for with the artists we like and their new releases.

So a lot of people are posting people who are still making music now (still qualifiies) but would you say that some of these artists have already hit their peak and are on a decrease now? Would you still consider a solid 20 years of their career to be all successful?

DQed. They were hardly successful until 1994. I wouldn't count them.
They were successful in the Gilman scene when they started, they just weren't nationally successful until '94. If they have to start off with a certain amount of sucess to qualify then a lot of bands that are being mentioned here wouldn't count. I'd still count them.

My best friend saw Clapton in concert a little while ago, all while various tornadoes had touched down across the state. Apparently the show had to be cut short by a little bit, and there were roadies running around trying to catch alot of gear that was starting to blow offstage.
Bands that will make it to 20 succesful years:
Opeth (18 years) - even if they don't put out another record before 2010, i think they have been a success enough
Incubus (17 years) - They are on hiatus but if they come back with one more good album that will be 20 good years
Converge (18 years) - duh...

I wanted to see him so badly. What sucks is that when my dad and I heard about it he said, "Well we could have gone had we not got the Tom Petty tickets." As much as I love Tom Petty I would have much rather have seen Clapton.

Okay the title of this thread is successful careers over 20 years, what i meant by that is that at least 20 years of their career was successful. So i don't think Green Day would really count.

Green Day has only been successful for 14 years of their career. Pearl Jam will be at 20 in a few more years.

So I guess if you want to take the thread title to it's literal points (which is fine), then Green Day does not count. If you feel like letting it be stretched, they do count.

Key word: successful
Green Day has been around since 88-89, but they found success in 94. I think it's fair to be specific because otherwise, too many other bands fall into this category. As much as I like Green Day, let's not shove them in this thread quite yet.

You could argue that they had a different level of success (local success, their our in Europe could be considered successful). But I really don't have an issue with not putting them in this catagory yet. It's only a few more years.
underthetalking
07/01/08, 03:41 PM
I think that also depends on how you merit success. Some can argue that Green Day was successful for the first few years of their career.
SanePsychotic
07/01/08, 03:43 PM
It all really depends on how you want to argue it. I really could care less one way or another as I know that they're a solid band and that they'll make the 20 "successful" years easily.

According to Wiki and iTunes they released Dizzy Up The Girl in '98 and I remember hearing songs from that album ("Slide" and "Iris") on the radio when I was a kid. So probably about half of their career is "sucessful".

yeah, they released A Boy Named Goo in 1995, which 3 or 4 singles, which did become huge hits i believe. i wasn't sure if the thread meant bands who have had 20 successful years, or bands that have been around for 20 years and are successful.
so yeah, they're still doing well, their last cd, Let Love In. "Better Days," "Let Love In," and "Stay with You" were from that album and did pretty well.
