Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is their only great album. Being There and A Ghost Is Born are also good. The rest isn't worth your time.
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is probably their best, But Summerteeth and Being There are fantastic as well. A Ghost Is Born is just a failed attempt at further experimentation and thank God they bounced back with the pretty good Sky Blue Sky.

It's better than A.M.
I like the overall style of music that they were making on AGIB but I don't really feel the overall songwritting is up to par with their other releases and I end up finding myself skipping to the next song more often then not. While I'm not a fan of SBS's particular sound, I can at least make it through the record without getting totally frustrated.

Krautrock i'm assuming referrs to some sort of German-influence music, but I'm not familiar with it...Yep, experimental music that appeared in Germany toward the late 60's. Neu!, Can, and Faust are probably the best known bands in the genre if any of those ring a bell.

Mmm gotcha. Same here too actually.
Being There is their trying to escape their roots record. It's awesome.
Summerteeth is their pop record. It's fantastic.
A Ghost is Born is their "experimental" record. It's good but inconsistent.
Sky Blue Sky is their "dad rock" record (coined by pitchfork). It's pretty good too. It's probably the most far removed from the rest of their discography though.
Summerteeth and Being There are great. The other two are worth the listen as well.
I'll give you that. I usually listen to one half at a time as if the other didn't exist. I'm surprised you didn't beat me for not liking AGIB that much. Was it you that enjoyed it a lot more than the others? Other than YHF of course.

With Wilco you're basically talking two different bands/eras. Pre- and Post- SummerTeeth. Being There, while being an unquestionably better (and more enjoyable) album then Yankee, has an entirely different style, sound and feel. You never mistake the two.
If Yankee was your introduction to Wilco, chances are you might not like Being There's more Americana, Uncle Tupelo, vibe. It sounds nothing like Yankee, and for me that's a good thing. I haven't liked anything, except Sky, since Summerteeth.

I think you'll really dig Being There. Oh, if you've heard the Sky Blue Sky b-side The Thanks I Get, there's an acoustic Jeff Tweedy version out there which is stellar and right up your alley as well.

As already mentioned, they had to live up to impossible standards. Personally, I'd say it's right in the middle of Wilco's discography ahead of Sky Blue Sky and behind Summerteeth.
The version of The Thanks I Get I alluded to earlier is from this.
Right, I know what you're saying. I think Sky Blue Sky is pretty solid. I don't like it as much as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I don't think, but still, I think it's good.

You guys ever hear about Tweedy's response to the Entertainment Weekly's reveiw (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20038384,00.html) of Blue Sky Blue? Particularly the last line:
This may be the best Eagles album the Eagles never made.

Such a great album, I wish I was listening to it for the first time haha. It's got some really great rock songs (Monday, Outtasite) along with the usual Wilco musical-awesomeness. You can definitely hear the transition from A.M.'s country rock stylings to their more melodic-indie-folk-rock of their later career.

Eh, who cares what fans say -- you like what you like. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is my favorite, but I can just as easily enjoy A.M. or Sky Blue Sky or any of their other albums. I like them all for different reasons, Jeff Tweedy is just an all around great songwriter no matter what he's writing.
And as far as their last two albums go, they are definitely a far step from their original sound but I think after seeing Jeff Tweedy play solo a couple times...with sets that stretched throughout wilco's entire catalogue ...I just feel like at the core of most of their songs is something that began as a simple folk/country/rock song.

True dat. There's definitely a distinct feel to each album, which I like. And don't get me wrong. YHF is great album, I just dig A.M. more. And judging by this first listen I've given it, Being There, too.

You can't go wrong with any Uncle Tupelo record, though March 16 - 20, 1992 is probably my favorite. Its their take on a traditional Folk album, and was kind of an f-u to their record label which was tring to force them into being the next 'alternative' hit-maker.
Son Volt is really or hit or miss, Traces is probably the only album that holds weight to Wilco discography. I've always thought Farrar had a better voice then Tweedy, but he wasn't as strong a musician. None of his post-Tupelo stuff is exactly 'wowing'.

I'm going into this album with caution. I enjoyed Happy Hollow and I was quite pleased that Kasher wrote exterior to himself after releasing an ambitious meta album that lampooned his proclivity toward personal politics (namely, his failure of a lovelife), but it wasn't necessarily a strong album and actually accentuated just how good Kasher's songwriting is when penning tales of humble, nuanced people. I'm incredibly excited, as Kasher has to be my favorite lyricist beyond Dylan (though he certainly isn't the best contemporary lyricist by any stretch and shares many of the same flaws as Obert), but The Good Life has become the outlet where his best songwriting is had, so I'm weary.
I'm much more excited to hear whatever subtle reinvention Tweedy and co. goes through with this album.

The cautious attitude is probably the best regarding the new Cursive album. Have you heard the two songs posted or not? In my opinion i think this new album will probably be in the same realm of Happy Hollow.
When i tried The Good Life it didn't grab me, but since the talk of the new Cursive album has been up The Good Life has been popping up also. I think i'll try it again.
So am i, Wilco has a knack for putting out solid albums. Even A Ghost Is Born following up Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a solid release as it was shadowed by YHF.

I don't think Blue Sky Blue compared to their earlier stuff, but it was an entertaining change of pace after two rather boring albums.
I'm interested to see where they go next, Jeff wasn't exactly impressed with the response Sky got in the media.

The cautious attitude is probably the best regarding the new Cursive album. Have you heard the two songs posted or not? In my opinion i think this new album will probably be in the same realm of Happy Hollow.
I've heard one of the new tracks, which I enjoyed. If they do something similar to Happy Hollow, that's fine, as long as it's more refined, the compositions become more disciplined if they're going to make such grandiose pieces of four minute music (in comparison to the sound of Domestica) and Kasher writes lyrics that are more meaningful and profound. Again, Happy Hollow was good, but it followed up The Ugly Organ, a near perfect (as far as Kasher's potential) album insofar as what Kasher's capable of. His best work is restrained and personal. Happy Hollow was neither, and the result was a capable but disappointing LP, and if he can refine the ambition, it may be good, but I remain spectical.
When i tried The Good Life it didn't grab me, but since the talk of the new Cursive album has been up The Good Life has been popping up also. I think i'll try it again.
The Good Life, lyrically, is the culmination of Kasher's strenghts: songs about humble, relatable yet engaging people and their personal strife. Help Wanted Nights, their last album, featured Kasher's best writing other than Ugly Organ, without the Post-Hardcore/Midwestern Emo instrumentals. If you don't like a certain blend of Indie Rock/Pop and contemporary Folk, it won't appeal to you, but the thing that's always drawn me to Kasher's work was the songwriting, so I'm able to make the transition between either act seemlessly.
So am i, Wilco has a knack for putting out solid albums. Even A Ghost Is Born following up Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a solid release as it was shadowed by YHF.
I enjoyed A Ghost is Born qutie a bit. I wasn't partial to Sky Blue Sky, but, again, with Wilco, there's always a subtle reinvention of their sound, ensuring that we'll be treated to something that isn't necessarily the same as the last release, which always gets me excited for new Wilco albums.

Well we'll see. It's really just a waiting game, and that wait is just over a week. Out of curiousity, do you think that the use of strings rather than horns on The Ugly Organ seperates it from Happy Hollow at all? It's one of the reasons why i enjoy it better personally.

I see, well i suppose it's worth another listen, i don't see why i wouldn't enjoy it. But the bolded explains the connection between the two for me. I didn't quite get a clear perception before.

Exactly. They know the balance of how to keep the old sound fresh with tweaks on each release.

I think Gretta's strings complimented the album's ambiance just as the horns perfectly accentuated the sound and musical milieu Happy Hollow was attempting. Both aid their respective albums. They aren't the reason I prefer one over the other, personally.

I'd go one further. They completely annihilate a particular sound in some instances and build something entirely new. YHF sounds virtually nothing like A.M. sounds virtually nothing like Sky Blue Sky, and so on.

I still consider The Ugly Organ on the abrasive side of things, but i get what you mean by the album's ambiance, and yes Gretta does a fantasic job of working with it. Happy Hollow with the horns seems to accentuate the sound, absolutely, but sometimes the chaotic-ness of things won't pull me in the same way the The Ugly Organ does with the strings. That's just my take on things.

It was bold to re-raise me like that but i like it. I call.
It wasn't until that last comment that I remembered I was in the Wilco thread, not the Cursive one. To avoid bringing in too much non Wilco discussion I'll try to keep it brief. I always felt that Domestica was Tim Kasher's masterpiece, although The Ugly Organ, Happy Hollow, and The Storms of Early Summer are all understandably interchangeable in their placements after it. Album of the Year, Help Wanted Nights, and select songs from Blackout and Novena are great as well.
But back to Wilco. I really enjoy almost everything they've put out except for A Ghost Is Born. It really just comes off as a failed experiment to me. Some songs are great, but others either drag on too long or aren't very memorable to me. I enjoyed Sky Blue Sky quite a bit, although it doesn't feel like a Wilco record to me like the others.

I'm with you there in liking Sky Blue Sky more, although i wouldn't consider it a failed experiment. It was just a bit unrefined.

Yeah I can definately see why someone wouldn't dig it for that reason. I always saw it's angst as its strength though, after listening to it in it's entirety, that final scream of I LOST THE WILL TO FIGHT hits so hard man. The Ugly Organ and Happy Hollow are much more mature though.

Yeah, he does a great job of demonstrating angst in that album, but i guess to me it isn't as strong as the mature lashes he makes at himself in The Ugly Organ, and other things in Happy Hollow.

Domestica's fantastic in it's depiction of a marriage dissolving, but Album of the Year, by my estimation, does this much better and in a way that's more relatable and mature (it's far more impartial - both male and female protagonists are painted in a morally amibugous light). Domestia worked on pure aggressive emotion - it was clearly cathartic for Kasher, set to Cursive's Post-Hardcore by way of mid-western indie scene sound, he could bark and scream his concept album for everyone to hear.
Album of the Year is a much more restrained and fully-realized take on such a relationship. I would hesitate to call Domestica "Kasher's masterpiece."
If anything, The Ugly Organ is the most self-aware, poingnant, self-conscious and, at times, humorous album Kasher's ever written and recorded. See my review at Sun on the Sand for the reasons why I believe this.

I really enjoyed A Ghost is Born, but I agree that it's inconsistent.

The Ugly Organ wasn't a "version" of Domestica but a meta-musical treatise on Kasher's lyrics, music and, to a lesser extent, a self-involved commentary on his life that transcended the introspective and ultimately self-indulgent nature of his older work. It's self-deprecating; he's chastising himself for the formula he's created that's so evident in works like Domestica. It's night and day between those two albums in relation to their themes.

I didn't say I liked Sky Blue Sky. On the contrary, I don't like Sky Blue Sky. I'm just saying, it sounds nothing like, say A.M, just as YHF sounds nothing like Summerteeth. They make a nearly complete reinvention for each album.

Kasher's a songwriter who's clearly shown signs of progression in his songwriting as he's hit his thirties. There's angst in his Good Life work (Album of the Year is saturated with it), but there's also a wide-spectrum of emotion and nuance that's a visceral part of the human experience. The best thing he's done lyrically that isn't The Ugly Organ, in my humble opinion, is Help Wanted Nights, insofar as he's crafted a living, breathing small town filled with interesting, everyday people, and documents the very different circumstances that define their lives and and existence, not all of it being the easily made angst found in "end of relationship" lyric fodder. It's Kasher becoming more Springsteen-ian, if you will.

I see, i see. Which makes The Ugly Organ all that much better to me. It takes a really good musician to pull that off.

I really enjoyed Tweedy's composed guitar solos and the pro-tools manipulation. The electronic flourishes and the fantastic production by Jim O'Rourke made it very enjoyable. They could have easily devolved into a jam band, but they didn't. It's nowhere near YHF, but it's good, nonetheless.
