View Full Version : Is the NL West the worst division in MLB History?

- Arizona is 41-41, and has a 2.5 game lead.
- The overall record of the division is 179 - 231.
- All 3 of the worst teams, by record, in the NL, are in the NL West
- All 5 teams have losing records in interleague play.
Can anybody think of an instance where a division was this bad?

if it finishes like this, no.
but the 2006 NL Central was pretty horrific.

2006 NL Central W/L%: .467
2008 NL West W/L %: .437
Not even close right now.

the 1997 NL Central was pretty horrifying, too:
Houston 84 78
Pittsburgh 79 83
Cincinnati 76 86
St. Louis 73 89
Chicago 68 94

2005 NL West (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Major_League_Baseball_season) was awful, but still a .459 %.

oh, right. i'm not arguing that this division isn't the worst i can remember right now .. but i don't think the chances are very good that it finishes this bad.

.469 - better than the 2006 NL Central.
I remain unconvinced...

.437...but only sort of counts because it was shortened by the strike.

This is funny because everyone looked at the competition in the NL West and said 'wow' but no one has put it together yet....or maybe we all just over hyped the division in the first place.
The common factor is no one has an offense. The pitching is still strong in the division, but it'll be hard to win outside of it when you're facing more a more potent line-up.

still, it was a month and a half later when they went on strike. if the NL west is as bad come mid-August, they take the cake, otherwise that 94 season was epic-bad.

It may be, I don't know. There's no doubt it's utter garbage though.

i think it'll finish better, just because most of the rest of the season is divisional games (combined winning percentage of .500!!!) and they don't have to play any more NL teams. i don't have much faith in my Dodgers though, now that we've lost Furcal and can't hit at all.
