What does everyone do here to stay in shape and stay healthy? Feel free to dive into your exercise schedules, food guides, and anything else you see fit (no pun intended). I've been trying to shed some pounds and live a little healthier as of late, so tips or suggestions are welcome, as well.

I tried to start a workout routine again now that I'm out of college and have a job. Trying to get a routine to my life. Problem is I fucked up my arm first day and I'm waiting til after the holiday to start again.

I usually go running a few times a week (anywhere from 2.5-5km), competitive soccer twice a week (usually 1hr+), and hiking on weekends. I tried working out and I just didn't have the motivation.

I usually work out an hour a day, on week days. 30 minutes on lifting, another 30 on cardio.
When well, I play basketball 4 times a week for 30 minutes to 3 hours.
I do nothing. I should definitely do something. What a sick thread to start. Maybe I'll get some good ideas.

moderation is actually the best longterm diet out there, starving yourself will help you lose weight quickly but isn't at all good for you

i hit the weights about 6 times a week, everyday focusing on a different muscle region [monday chest, tuesday back, wednesday shoulders, thursday legs, friday chest/back, saturday arms]. i also try to hit the track or play basketball a couple days a week.
diet wise stay away from pop and try to limit the amount of fast food you eat. also lots of healthy protein foods if you lift, make sure you have a post-workout meal too.
the whole trick to exercising is develop a routine. [as in what time of day you go, not the lifts]
good luck ;-)

i eat about a plate of veggies, maybe half a plate of fruit a day, i try to eat fish and chicken instead of pork and beef when i can, i drink a soda maybe once a week, and i quit drinking alcohol.
in terms of exercise i lift weights every other day, and either go for a bike ride or walk every day.

Usually just the elliptical for 45 minutes in the morning and a hour at night. I try not to eat much before the morning workout so I use fat instead of stored carbohydrates. The night workout is just so I can take my mind off of everything before I go to bed. If the gym is too boring you can always try one of the weirder programs or do interval training on the machines. See how fast you can go, how much resistance you can handle, etc.
As for diet tips...the whole calorie in/calorie out concept is true but if you want to lose weight it is really good not to eat a few hours before going to bed. Unless you train or work off the calories of what you consume before bed within 24 hrs it will be stored as fat, instead of just being used to get you through the day.
It may sound girly but you can use a site like fitday.com to track which nutrients you are getting. It helps cut down on cravings a little because you won't be starved for (as an example) vitamin A or K

I was 154 in march (I'm 5'3) and now I am 135. I eat like crap (but try to eat better)... I do 1 mile on the treadmill (burn around 100 or so calories) then I do this weird elliptical thingie with an incline on it and burn around 100 or so calories Then I bike 3 miles and burn about 100 or so calories.
I do this 3 to 4 times a week depending on my schedule. I think I will remain the same weight I currently am until I change my diet but I am really picky eater so that will be hard!

lifting doesnt mean you are fit, it just means you have more muscle. Bodybuilders who don't do much cardio generally die younger of a heart attack because their heart doesnt grow along with their body.

I realized what a slob I've become so lately my brother and I have been getting back in the gym, but only three times a week because work is nutso. Abs are an everyday thing, with upper body, lower body, and then a day of miscellaneous stuff coming on different days. It somewhat corresponds to the workouts we had been doing for lacrosse at school three days a week, so I know it's legitimate enough to work since I got so much stronger and healthier in school. I gotta get rid of this beergut somehow. I need to get back on Advair and start doing cardio again, but I'm scared to run since I havent in forever haha

Yes I know I'm not retarded thank you very much. You might think that you know how the human body works for everyone, but I hate to break it to you: you don't. You have no idea who I am, what I look like, or what my daily habits are. I would tell you to fuck off, but that sounds like I'm admitting defeat. I know my body very well seeing as I've been following this routine since I was about thirteen. If my metabolism was going to slow down from lack of exercise and excessive consumption of fat, it would have done so probably when I was sixteen. You just noticed it last year? That's fantastic. Go exercise or something. I'm going to keep to my routine because I have yet to see consequences and I doubt I will throughout college.

You have got to be kidding me. Thanks for generalizing the entire female population and assuming that I'm on my period because I responded to an internet post I disagree with.
What I said (or maybe I was not clear enough, so now I'm clarifying) was that if I had gone from a routine of somewhat exercising and not eating a lot of junk food to one that involves zero exercise and more junk food, it would have been quite detrimental to my metabolism and I would have noticed that within a few years of the beginning. As it has been a little over five years since the beginning of my lovely regimen, I see no need to worry about the consequences of eating what I like whenever I want. This is, of course, also including the heavy drinking and consumption of beer in the past three years as well. I'm not worried about my body because of my relatives being thin and appearing to be in shape when in reality they don't and haven't exercised in years. DNA and heredity should keep me okay at least until I'm out of college, if not for many years after that. Also, if I start seeing changes in my body type (read: getting fat) obviously I would do something about it.
And please, next time you post, figure out the difference between "your" and "you're."

You don't understand why I got offended? I posted in the thread as a JOKE, first of all, because clearly what I had to say was going to be of no real use to anyone who was looking for help in this thread. You decided to come in and talk shit about me and my lifestyle for no apparent reason, and then continue on to tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about? Okay that's cool.
You're right though, I have no reason to post in this thread.

Thanks! I did go (and I am still going) to the meetings. The meetings aren't always the most informative, but they help remind you of the little things you start to forget to do (like eating all of my fruits and vegetables for the day before I use any points on ice cream). I've been lucky to have an internship this summer that is at a place that has it's own gym. Since I'm unpaid they let me leave whenever I want to (early) and go work out.
At this point I've completely changed the way I eat (I hardly touch bread any more and my idea of a really good snack is caramel rice cakes), plus with the incentive of going to weigh in each Tuesday night makes me pay a little more attention to what I eat.
I highly recommend using the program. I can PM you the formula thing that tells you how many points you are supposed to eat each day to lose weight, if you want.

That is so nice of you! I was reading the WW Magazine at the gym and the point system seems really cool, like calorie counting but emphasizing healthy calories over empty ones.
During the school year I eat mostly fruits, veggies and rice...it sounds so nutritionally deficient but my stomach is useless if I eat really complex or processed foods. My real downfall is when I go home for a month over breaks, I have all these "bad" foods available, no will power and no gym. I'm definitely going to consider meetings after I graduate and am living at home full time.

So this said Health and Fitness, not everyone act like a douche bag.
My routine is cutting out Soda completely. I've cut back on fast food a lot. I also have been riding my bike about 7-10 miles a day. I'm not talking like just riding, I mean really pushing it. At the end of high school and my first year of college, I weighed about 155. Then I went to a Military Academy for my first year of school and gained some muscle and was around 160. I'm 172-175 now. Over 4 years of not being completely active, bad sleeping habits, drinking beer, the internet and just eating junk food really did me in. I just want to stop muffin topping haha.

You can get humus at pretty much any food market or convinent store. I suggest the organic brand because it's just better for you. My favorite flavor is roasted red peper. They have orignal, cheese and other flavors. You can put it on more then pita though. Like cold veggies and crackers. It depends on what you like.

I run on the treadmill 3-4 times a week in the mornings for about 1.5 - 2 miles. It started out being something to get rid of excess adrenaline, but I've become addicted to it. It makes me feel so much better even if I am running for a short time. I also started biking and usually bike for about 40 minutes to an hour.
As for the food, I don't really watch what I eat. I'd say I am generally a healthy eater because I don't eat much candy or sugar, but I am horrible at getting enough fruits and vegetables in my diet.

Every other season I've been able to pretend I've been going to gym in the off season, because I've naturally gotten bigger. But for some reason, I feel as though I should take a precaution this time in case it doesn't happen.

Oh it's not that, I mean, I'm not the biggest guy, but I can hold my own.
It's more the fact that I wouldn't know how to use the equipment, other then the treadmill and the bike. I don't want to be getting in some fitness fanatic's way and have them get annoyed at me. 'Cause I got a discount at the gym I'm going to be going to 'cause they sponsor my team, and it's for 'elite' athletes, at least that is how it promotes itself.

i used to weigh 210 lbs... and i'm only 5'9". i'm now back to my normal weight of about 140. i gained most of the weight during my 2 year relationship with my ex, and lost it all in about a year.
everyone asks my "secret", and then is disappointed to find out there isn't one. it just takes time/dedication, excercise and being aware of what you put into your body.

I work out at least 5 days a week. I try to do at least an hour of cardio each session, and I do weights every other day after doing cardio. If you are trying to lose weight, don't drink your calories (starbucks, gatorade, soda, vitamin water); stick with water. Cut out red meat and stick with lean meat, and don't eat fried foods. I really don't pay attention to carbs, but I will recommend that you switch to whole grains for everything (bread, pasta, pretzels) because white flour turns right into sugar.
day one, three, five= run (a little bit of walking too) 3 miles
two, four, six= lunges, squats, crunches, reverse crunches and pushups with a 20 minute bike session
seven= rest just like god.
i cut soda and fast food completely out of my life. I try to limit the amount of snacks. Other than that I usually eat whatever I want, I jsut try not to go overboard. So far since starting this routine I went from 247lbs. to 228lbs. that was three months ago, granted sometimes i do skip.

I usually lift four times a week with free weights as I have for the past four years
I box 2-3 times a week
I submission wrestle once or twice a week
I try to run once or twice a week as well
And, during the months preceding an athletic season, I partake in my patented explosiveness routine
Back in my day, I could bench over 160% of my bodyweight and run a nasty 400 meters but, recently, with my enhanced diet of cigarettes and alcohol, I'm not quite on my game: actually I've been pretty fucking inactive lately.

Just started about a week ago. Running anywhere between 4-5 miles each time out, biking 10-15 minutes, and swimming for an half hour to 45 minutes. I know building muscle is key for losing weight but I really have no interest at all in lifting weights at this point. I'm trying to lose somewhere around 15 lbs. Hopefully this routine (practically running myself into the ground) along with a solid diet will be enough to chop some of my extra fat off.
How long am I looking at? Is it going to work at all?

I would suggest building up mileage a bit slower. Last year I began training for some races and "ran myself into the ground". I started having knee pains a few months into it and after going to the doctor, it tuned out to be "runner's knee". It's basically an overuse injury. I stopped running for 2.5, which is no fun when you're in the middle of training.
Basic increase in mileage should be 10-15% per week. It seems really slow, but it's worth it if you don't want to run the risk of injury.

I think I'm going to stick for 3.5-4 miles at this point in time. I guess my biggest question is that is it enough? Can I eat well while running that distance each day, biking for a little bit, and swimming and lose the weight I want to?
I'm about 164 now, I figured I wouldn't even consider any real weight training until I slimmed myself down to 150-155 - but if that's too lofty of a goal then I need to know what I should do.

If you were sedentary before this, you could probably drop 10lbs in a couple weeks, as long as you're eating healthy (or at least not worse than you were before). You will probably wear yourself out before you stop losing weight with that schedule. Make sure you have at least 1 day of rest per week.
As far as weight training... more muscle = faster metabolism = more fat is burned. It's basically that simple. This is why you don't see many weight lifters doing much cardio, as it breaks down their muscle. I'd say the sooner you start lifting, the faster you will see results.
Just remember that if you keep your current schedule the same, your body will get used to the routine and it won't have to work as hard, thus burning less calories. Don't forget to switch things up if you start to plateau.

I've let myself go for the last couple of months, but I'm making a serious effort to start living a healthier life again. When I focused myself last time, I managed to drop 88 pounds in a little over three months, and I was pretty proud of that. I'm sitting at about 345 right now (that makes me sound like a wrecking ball I'm sure, but I'm 6'4", so it's not quite as bad as it sounds, haha), and I'd like to get down to about 250.

Just start walking anywhere at any time. Whenever you find yourself with time to kill, go for a walk. After you get accustomed to doing so, increase your speed and the length of the walk slowly. If you're eating decently to go along with the walks, and only drinking water, you'll look great in no time. It worked just fine for me. :-)

If you want a kick ass workout, join a gym with a pool. Honestly a half hour to an hour in the pool every other day and your upper body gets toned in no time. I do an ab workout, swim or run 2 miles every single day. It helps big time.
That and I have invisalign (the invisible braces) so eating is a pain in the ass to take them out, brush, put them back in which has curbed my eating big time. Also I can only drink water while they're in (I drank water before them, but this doesnt hurt)

I've always struggled with weight but ever since the summer something motivated me and I have pushed myself harder than I ever have to work out. Whenever I don't workout for a couple of days my body feels gross. One thing that I've noticed is that stretching really helps when it comes to cardio. I never stretched a lot before but when I started to I found that it was easier to increase the cardio intensity. My workouts now usually consist of a 15-20 jogging warm up, triceps and bicep weight lifts, one other machine for shoulders and back that I do not know the name of and then back to cardio for another 15-30 minutes.

Yeah, I definitely think you're lying. But even still, I can't imagine a much worse decision than starting a regimented exercise program at that age. Best case scenario, you do nothing but avoid doing major and long-lasting damage to your body.

I was raised around people who were either super/morbidly obese, or skinny, fasting for 90 days, underweight people. There was no medium. As a child I was very muscular which already made me heavy, but when I was about 7 or 8, I stopped riding my bike and my mom was a single parent working full time and going to school full time, and every meal I had was fast food, my tummy stopped being flat and the little hint of a six pack i had went away, and people kept saying "oh you have to lose weight ashley, you cant get fat" there was a lot of pressure, and i did diet, and I did go to the gym. I remember being on prism, atkins, and the south beach diet from the ages of 8/9-12/13. Did it help? Absolutely not, I still have problems with food. But who was I surrounded by? I had a lot of grown women with very bad self esteem issues who were either starving themselves and pretending they were just fasting or gorging themselves, and I loved fashion, so I idolized emaciated models, and for a while, everyone was preparing me to be a model. Food was a sin, and eating wasnt meant to be fun, but at the same time nobody could control their eating habits.
So no I'm not fucking lying, if you really want to continue believing that, then you can go on thinking that school children arent vicious little monsters who will tear you apart if you have a pouchy belly, and you can go on thinking that 9 year olds dont know anything about self esteem. Keep being in denial about the fact that there are fat kids who are miserable and who are willing to do anything to lose the weight. Have fun in your little happy go lucky everyone's healthy land, and when you have daughters maybe you'll clue in and realize that there are a lot of girls in elementary school who do diets.

No no actually when I began swimming in September I was a horrendous swimmer...my girlfriend actually made fun of me for it (she swims competitively) but yeah, maybe take a lesson?
That's the problem. I've taken lessons, and never got any results. I don't know what's wrong with me. It's not even that I'm a bad swimmer, it's that I can't even float for a second to save my life.

I'm motivated only because of how awesome you feel after. It's awesome to lift and run in between sets that way you get in cardio and whatever else you would choose to work on that day.

I used to do gymnastics and worked out 20+ hours a week, but about a year and a half ago I got hurt and eventually had to quit. I don't really do any type of exercise now besides teach gymnastics, which doesn't count. I have a gym membership, so I've considered going to the gym to do some cardio since a lot of exercises with weights irritate my back. I really just can't get the motivation to get up and go to the gym though. I haven't gained any weight over the past few years, so I'm not too concerned, but if I did start to put on some weight, then I'd definitely start going to the gym regularly.

there was this girl in my class in high school in gymnastics that broke her legs i swear like at least once a year. if she didnt have some sort of cast on something was wrong haha. gymnasts are probably some of the most fit people when it comes to sports IMO. she's like 4' 6" or so but goddamn is her upper body ripped. what kind of events did you do? is events the correct term?

Yeah, gymnasts are really in shape and muscular. I did beam, vault, floor, and uneven bars.
