This is my first review on this site and while this is not even really a review, I thought I would try and give my thoughts on The Dark Knight, without ruining too much of the movie. While I have only watched it once, and plan to watch it again opening night, these are my thoughts after one time in.
After watching the movie one week ago, and letting it all settle in, I thought that this movie was a pretty good, entertaining, but not the masterpiece that everyone is calling it out to be. Sure the cinematography, directing, and acting were amazing, but where it felt short, IN MY OPINION, was the story. As a fan of comic book movies, I know that what makes or breaks a comic book movie is the storyline. Sure any, and most, comic movies can have fun action sequences, but the storyline is the difference to making a comic movie stand out as a masterpiece, i.e. Batman Begins. One reason I felt that the storyline was weak was that for the casual watcher, they would have trouble understanding what was going on. There are so many side comments and little conversations that I felt that people might have trouble understanding what is going on during the movie. Another weakness was that instead of elaborating on one storyline, it seemed to have too many side stories that took away from the main storyline, of Batman struggling with his inner demons. And finally another reason I didn't like the storyline was because I felt like this whole movie they were trying to go for action, action, action. It seemed like the movie couldn't go 10 mins without another action sequence. That is great, for casual watchers that want a fun summer movie to watch, but with an ensemble cast like this movie there is no need to have that much action.
While this movie was pretty good the first time around, I will need to watch it again to let it fully soak in. I felt like the first time around I was too FOCUSED on the storyline and now that I have watched it, I will just learn to enjoy myself the second time around, and maybe my opinion will be a little different.....
P.S. It is true what all the reviews say, Heath Ledger does AMAZING in this movie. Half the time I was just waiting for scenes with him in it, just to hear him speak. My favorite scene is the hospital scene, and I think that really defies his character.
