View Full Version : Offer made by an angel investor!

Hey,

This is weird. A guy came and saw a show that my band was playing. We've been getting a great response from the middle-aged crowd, as well as teenagers, younger kids, etc. We pretty much span across the age groups without much trouble. Anyway, the guy is pretty wealthy, lots of clout in this area, blah blah. He's extended an offer to function as an angel investor for us, giving us the funds to record our album, tour, get our stuff together and all that jazz. The deal would be that he'd get a 10% return on our profits. That's profit, which only exists once we've broken even, of course. I've known the fellow for many years, so I know he's an upstanding guy. It's an interesting offer to have made.

Just looking to see what people think of the scenario. Obviously, he's hoping we get famous, returning his investment and making a great deal of money on it. 10% isn't much if we make 100$, but it is if we make a million, or more, over time. I can see WHY he'd do it, despite the high risk, etc, etc. There really aren't any loopholes or fine print attached, it sort of just is what it is. It's a shot in the dark taken with a whole lot of hope and confidence on his part. If it doesn't work, the money's lost, but at least the chance was taken, is where he stands. Input?

have a talk with him and make sure he knows it might not work. Then get yourself a solicitor to look over the contract on your behalf

is his name carter evans? he ruined the band tysen (now holyfiend) and he ruined the band vendetta red (now sirens sister). if you plan on signing any record contract with any label, do not sign a side contract with anyone.

Initially it seems like a good deal but after that it feels kind of sketchy. What if hypothetically, you become the next U2 or something? The idea that you could make millions and then would still be bound to owe this guy 10% just sort of sucks.

With the music industry in the shambles it is now, I wouldn't be thinking about becoming bigger than you are. This guy is cutting you a huge deal for any smaller/local band.

Take it.

That's sort of how I feel. I don't really anticipate taking a label deal with anyone all too large, if anyone at all. I don't even listen to them, but Dispatch managed to remain successfully independent. I think it's definitely do-able. It just takes away some convenience regarding distribution, etc. We'd, hopefully, start our own label for distribution purposes once we got rolling. I have a connection with a lawyer (I feel like I know all the right people at the moment), so I was thinking I'd have him sit and determine the legitimacy and good-ness of the whole thing.

And no, it's not that guy someone mentioned. I have no idea who that is!

If this guy is willing to invest in recording time, and pressing an album then he is basically taking the place of a label, and taking a much smaller cut of the dough. Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me... You've also got to worry about distribution, advertising, etc though...
