3OH!3 – Want
Record Label: Photo Finish Records
Release Date: July 8, 2008

Back when my brother was in high school and still in shape, he used to insist on walking around the house shirtless. Eating dinner: shirtless. Watching television: shirtless. Entertaining grandparents and various law firm partners: shirtless. Naturally, this drove my mother absolutely bonkers. She would decry his bare chest as a sign of the apocalypse, but he would stubbornly rip off his Texas Tech Red Raiders wifebeater as soon as possible each day. I could never do this because, quite embarrassingly, my chest actually indents due to a lack of any muscular development. I digress, though, as the true purpose of this is a particular occasion in which my endearing and all-knowing mother set out to teach my brother a lesson. One seemingly normal night at the dinner table we all sat down and dug in. My father, in a move never seen before, stops eating. He's laughing. He’s laughing so hard I think his mustache might fall off. We follow his gaze only to find my mother in an old lady silk bra. Her new rule was simple: if he could do it, she could do it. I haven't seen him unclothed since.

Parenting is a hard and fickle thing to master. But alas, I digress again (and again and again). Seeing my mother essentially hanging out in all her glory had me, a veritable chatterbox of nonsense, speechless. I didn’t sleep for weeks. I didn’t think I would ever feel normal again. After thousands of dollars of therapy with a certain Dr. Ronstadt, things started to look up. I went to high school. I started listening to emo. I looked at lots of porn. You know, man stuff. Then, just recently, I heard 3OH!3’s album Want. Everything I had worked so hard for was gone in a flash. I’m typing this in the fetal position. My ears have self-imposed claw marks. I will never look at a moog, synthesizer or hipster in a New Era cap the same way again. Want is going to be a bitch to repress.

It’s not that I can’t appreciate the tongue-in-cheek ridiculousness of Want. What I can't/won’t forgive is the constant fuzzy-fart beats. “I’m Not Your Boyfriend, Baby” and “Chokechain” throw in some interesting soundbites and electronic doo-dadding (like the latter’s middle eastern vibe), but each bass pound sounds more and more like a dirty bowel movement with every passing moment. Another point of contention comes in the screamy nature of Sean Foreman and Nathanial Motte’s vocals. “I Can’t Do It Alone” feigns at intelligence, but there is just far too much hasty yelling.

Still, overlooking obvious production touch-ups and magic button pushing, these guys can, umm, sing. They just choose not to. “Still Around” sounds completely out of place on Want as it downplays the hip-hop suburbia vibe for one of electro-emo angst (much like Forever The Sickest Kids’ “Coffee Break”). And hey, the song actually sounds good. Don’t pay attention to the lyrics, though. They’ll make your head explode. (“Go ahead and burn it down / I’m drunk and so is everyone else / In this devil town / They won’t let me turn around / To get one last look at my baby / While she’s still around”.) Maybe they’ll make some radio money off this song.

3OH!3 is learning, slowly. “Richman” showcases vocal distortions and quite the nifty horn beat; the vocals sound more like Gym Class Heroes than a Saosin breakdown. It’s a nifty jab at the gangster rags-to-riches ideology, but this sort of buried sarcasm happens much too infrequently. "Colorado Sunrise" revels in diversity with acoustic guitars, pianos and buzzing electronics. Its take on house DJ-style beats will have awkward kids everywhere playing with glowsticks. There's hope buried beneath Want. A bit of tweaking and some self-editing would really help these dudes achieve their dream of parody-ridden bliss. But until then, stay far far away.

Very funny review but I disagree, I really enjoy this album man. Would've at least given it's a 6 on vocals. To each his own, the fact is that they're a fun band and trying to take them seriously will ruin them, embrace the hillariousness.

this is the best 4th of july present ever. Jason Tate fighting for my rights to be a jackass. Abe Lincoln would be so proud of what you've built.

The most telling thing about this band is the fact that so many people say that, "they're fun, but I agree." If they were that fun, I'd like them and give them a good score. Barely half the songs are redeemable in any way. Stop making excuses.

Shit, that's the band I would have linked you to. Haha, they're an Albuquerque local. Plus I know for a fact that all their shit they're wearing in their wearing in their promotional pictures, they got in clearance at the local mall.

But hey, I've been a fan of 3oh!3 since warped last year when I was waiting for a different band to play and I saw them on the stage right next to the stage I was waiting at. I had no idea who they were, but their "anti-fun" must have been what won me over. I mean everybody in the crowd obviously was having a terrible time considering how lively it was. It was a travesty, even a year ago they were one of the biggest hits of the Denver warped.

Although, I'll admit they've changed a lot since then. They got signed, their sound has changed, and about a zillion "dance party" bands have gotten popular. So I can see where you're coming from. 3oh!3 is just a band I'm willing to stand up for, because they don't take themselves too seriously.

I'm judging the hell out of you right now.

Haha, oh god. I love you. Have my babies.

Actually I could argue that this album proves that America is more free than at it was at it's founding. Someone would have been at least chased out of town for uttering the lines: Shoosh girl, shut your lips/Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips.

I couldnt disagree with this review more. Unfortunately, there are some pretty horrid tracks on this album ('Still Around', 'Photofinnish', and 'Colorado Sunrise') but the good tracks make up for it ten fold. Personally, I really like the deep moog tones and half time head bobbing beats. It's so fun to just get into and bob your head and laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. I mean, they're two suburban white scene dudes making gangster ass rap.

I'd say it like a mix of The Faint's beefy moog tones, Young Love's dancey, 16th note hi-hat grooves, and DMX's rough vocal styling. I think 41% is far too harsh. No where near an A or even a B at that, but some of the tracks are outstanding.

i completely disagree with everything in this review except the intro. i don't know how true that is. but, i love this ablum, and i love 3oh!3. maybe you have to hear their old stuff to really appreciate it, but it is definitely a good album with a lot of excellent songs. maybe it just depends on your personal preference. There are plenty of clever lyrics as well. I really love "Don't Trust Me", especially the lines "Hush girl, shut your lips. Do the hellen keller and talk with your hips". If that's not clever, i don't know what is.

I hate it how people try to justify an album by saying it's "fun". An album can still be absolute shite even though it's fun. Either way, I haven't heard this album and I don't intend on hearing it either! Entertaining review Blake. This review merely confirmed my suspicions of this album!

That story is awesome! I can so imagine that happening in my household. Partly because my brother used to walk around topless everywhere; "is it me or is hot in here?" haha those were the days.

I love 3OH!3 and I really love this album. It makes me laugh a lot. And it is pretty much making fun of all the annoying gangsta music...haha. Plus its adding awesome technoy stuff. Not to mention these guys have great voices. I really love I'm Not Your Boyfriend...especially the part that goes "These children learn form cigarette burns, fast cars, fast women and cheap drinks..." And Still Around is a great song. And Colorado Sunrise. And I Can't Do This Alone is freaking amazing.

This review was entertaining...but I disagree with it when he says this album wasn't too good.

Oh and why didn't he mention Don't Trust Me...it is the single...and its really funny and a good song.

in a musical sense, this album leaves much to be desired.
in a comedic sense, it leaves little to be desired.
its fun factor? fairly high.
I'll leave it on my ipod in case i get stuck with musical duty at a tool's house.
Kid Cudi will get plays first, though

And "Colorado Sunrise" is a respectable song, stand alone

i actually like the part of "i'm not your boyfriend baby"
when it actually stops rapping and it slows down.

i also like "Don't trust me."
the rest of the album's a joke.

I kind of enjoyed the album, some songs I had difficulty sitting and listening to but, I'm going to check
them out on Warped and try to get a better understanding of their music.

I must say, upon reading this back, I realized that this is probably my favourite review on the site.
Nicely done Blake.

But I must also add that I do not like this band. Still Around gives me hope... but they won't change up their entire style and make an entire album of songs like that.

I know so many people in my school that love them. The only reason I don't hate them completely is because I'm sure they don't take themselves seriously

I really liked Don't Trust Me for a period last summer, but it's grown boring, and the rest of the album is mediocre

I'm not a huge fan, but 'Don't Trust Me' features one of the best lyrics ever! A-hem, "And tell your boyfriend, if he says he's got beef/that I'm a vegetarian and I ain't f*cking scared of him." Bellissimo! And is insanely catchy. Normally I don't give into my guilty pleasures, but I had to for 30H!3

Wow I can't believe this came out in July 2008. I started listening to them late last year and now they are touring New Zealand with Basshunter so thought I'd give the album another listen. Still irresistibly catchy, hope they put on a good show.

This album is good if you like this type of music, simple as that. If you are biased and dont even like this genre, dont bother making a review, this is a solid album
