Day One.
I arrived about 2 or so and it took me a very long time to get in almost 2 hours. The first abnd I actually found that I wanted to see was Fear Before the March of Flames... Fucking intense is the only way to describe their set. The wind coming off the ocean didn't have an effect and the small crowd their was gathered around was really into it.
Then I spent about an hour in line waiting to get back in because well... Concertseast sucks at organizing concerts and this caused me to miss Funeral for a Friend... THANK YOU!
Andrew WK was amazing I swear, I only know a limited number of his songs, but I enjoy him... Even if you don't like him, seeing him live is an experience and one everyone should give a chance to, he just makes you wanna kick back and dance and... Party?!?!
I headed out towards the end of his set to catch Relient K on the Paramount stage and they were good, my only problem being that they lacked alot of energy, but I also wasn't expecting alot of energy from them anyway. Oh the other disappointment being that they didn't "I'm Lion-o".
I walked back into the main stage area to check out Coheed, this was my first time getting to see them and if I wasn't biased, like I am, I think I'd have a hard time saying they didn't play the tighest set. They opened with In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3!!! Who plays an 8 minute song when you have maybe a 45 minute set? But they did. The sound, the energy, Claudio's voice, and crowd involvement were all there especially during Blood Red Summer.
I needed to take a breath so stepped to the back for the Starting Line, who I am not a huge fan of, but Mae's set was pretty much half over and JamisonParker(I think they were also playing I don't remember) isn't much better. Kenny came out with his hair dyed jet black, which just made me shake my head... Total fashionwhore. I guess if you were into them, you could enjoy their set more then I did... I'll give it to Kenny he had alot of energy, but their lead guitarist really lacks presence, if he showed half the energy Kenny did I probably would've shown alot more interest because even though the rhythym guiatrist showed alot of energy he got lost alot in the shuffle... On a sidenote Kenny was very grateful to the fans for their support something, which warrants major kudos especially given what was to follow.
I went back down for Brand New, who always live up to their billing. They opened with Tommy Gun, which drove the crowd nuts. Their set was tight still lacking Shower Scene though, which is very disappointing. My biggest problem came when Jessie did Tautou and No Seatbelt Song back to back, which is cool because enjoy them both, but along with those two and a jam session sort of they had to waste 10 minutes of set time besides the actual length of songs... Now I read in an article earlier in the day about something the drummer said, which was that they viewed the whole emo-pop-punk deal as a sort of fad, which they were looking to rise above. This is fine with me, but the way they acted on stage particularly Jessie I found poor because I think success is going to his/their heads to some degree... I mean why waste that time and why show only secondhand gratitude to your fans... "I'd like to thank my band members for putting up with me for four years seriously....... Oh thanks to you too", I mean Kenny was showing thanks after every song and so were most the acts... Brand New's show was great, their attitude was a major turn off, plus they closed with Sic Transit... CLOSE WITH SEVENTY TIMES 7!
Day two
Arrived and walked basically right in because they were tearing tickets for wristbands that would let you walk right in, which worked out perfect because I got in, in plenty of time to see Northstar on the Arcade Stage. They were great live and really humble, they seemed almost surprised by the response they got. The guitar-playing was on point and I think the singer's voice is actually better and clearer live then it is on CD. They also had a nice setlist with a good mix of old and new stuff... On a sidenote they were selling the new CD too, which I picked up immediately following their set.
Hazen St. was a band I remember seeing alot of stuff posted about on this site and they always seemed to coincide with SOTY so I figured I'd check them out... FUCKING HUGE WASTE OF LIFE. They were like REALLY BAD Cypress Hill meets nu metal meets shit... They had two lead singers and the fat thugged out bass player, the most stereotypical radio band you'd ever see. "Whether you like us or not we're gonna be everywhere in a couple of months"... That just proves they didn't get it, why they were on the main stage over bands like Moneen and Northstar... Or even on this tour or MENTIONED ON THIS SITE, I have trouble fathoming...
Senses Fail and their Bitchcore act was next. I hate their lyrics and their stuff on CD and its not really much better live, but the crowd's reaction kinda drew you in. Alot of people went nuts for them and I must admit if I didn't care so much about their shitty lyrics I probably would've enjoyed them. They also used the support of DLing deal for cheap praise in part because they "don't know when the album will be out, but its out of our hands, we're sorry"... Wonder why?
At this point having gone through this I needed saving and I finally was by My Chemical Romance. The energy for their set was unreal, it almost seemed like the crowd tired itself out in the beginning, regained its breath and geared up towards the end. Pits hard a hard time staying open because people would rush into them so quickly they dissolved. The new songs are awesome, I'm Not Okay, which I heard the snippet of the other day and wasn't impressed with is much tighter live.
Midtown came on next and I was real pumped to see them because I never got to see them prior to this. They played like a veteran act, which I thought was cool because they were one of the only bands with consistent experience in being one of the leaders in the genre. A nice mix of old and new, nice commentary and interaction inbetween the songs. All in all, it helped me understand why I like them and why some people actually love them.
Joan Jett... Scary... Just plain scary.
Story Of The Year, another band I hadn't seen live. I like them enough and I understand why people don't. But I heard so much hype about their live show and now I understand why. The stage presence was excellent, sound was great, and awesome interaction with the crowd. Plus a nice setlist, which set it up to give the crowd a little bit of a breather with Anthem Of Our Dying Day... Plus I was pleased they didn't end with Until The Day Die and did with my personal fav In The Shadows.
Finally, what came for... TBS. The energy was unbelievable and having seen the reincarnated TBS a number of times, I believe that they are really seeming less and less like patchwork and more and more like cohesive unit. The new songs were straight-out in your face rock, which will surprise a number of people, who thought they were going to go really poppy. Adam was funny inbetween songs and very intense on stage especially during Your Own Disaster, in which I seen him stray from the basic formula of the song and make it into an awesome live version. I started a chant for one more song after their set was done, but no good.
Overall Skate And Surf Days One and Two, as I stated when I first read the line-up very TOP HEAVY. The third day probably was the best day from top to bottom with Fall Out Boy, Matchbook, Straylight, A Static Lullaby, Boys Night Out and Less Then Jake all playing, I thought they could've put one of those bands onto Day One or Day Two because they were lacking until they hit the end.
Plus Concertseast sucks... Shitty organization and shitty planning, how are you gonna have Moneen play opposite TBS? I wouldn've put them opposite Hazen St., so that way people who don't wanna see the next crappy radio band thats gonna be all over the place despite the fact that they SUCK and did JACKSHIT to get there can see a hardworking and deserving band like Moneen, instead of having them play to a practically empty crowd inbetween SOTY and TBS.
