View Full Version : The "correct" way to write bands/albums

Since I've pretty much come to the conclusion that many APer's have OCD, I made a poll a few days ago about whether Hellogoodbye should be capitalized or lowercased. It came out that it was about half and half as far as which people preferred, so I figured I would ask if there were any other spellings that you guys specifically make sure to write in your iTunes. Here are a few examples for me:

mewithoutYou
eels
The pAper chAse
At The Drive-In's - in/CASINO/OUT

So I just wanted to see what other bands or albums that you guys specifically make sure to spell a certain way, and agree/disagree towards other posters opinions of how they do things.

I never use ampersands. They screw me up when I'm trying to search for bands.

Hamlet
07/03/08, 07:34 PM
For artist names and album titles, I strip off the stylistic lower cases (a band name is a proper noun and should be capitalised), as well as any preceding punctuation ("...Of a Revolution" just looks dumb), then follow standard capitalisation rules in a similar fashion to song titles (lowercase articles, coordinating conjunctions, prepositions four letters or shorter).

I am more forgiving with song titles, and usually write them as stated in album covers - "crushcrushcrush", "...Because I Spot Hot Fire".

I use ampersands if the band uses them in their official publicity (website, album cover) eg This Day & Age, Angels & Airwaves.

I hate how iTunes ignores the article in a band name. The article is part of the band name, and should be included in alphabetisation. They're not Beatles, they're The Beatles. I don't want to find A Perfect Circle in the "P" section when their full name, specifically chosen by the band members, was "A Perfect Circle". It's an atrocity.

1. There is a new Mars Volta album coming out.

OR

2. There is a new The Mars Volta album coming out. I'd go with the first one. Similarly, bands with names in the plural that are not preceeded by a "the", I would include "the" in front of regardless. Ie; "I like the Horrorpops".

CellarGhosts
07/03/08, 09:15 PM
I've always written it "blink-182". I don't really care either way though.

Oh, and because they're my second favorite band ever, I feel compelled to say that it is not "THE Alkaline Trio" it's simply "Alkaline Trio".

Anthony Lutz
07/03/08, 09:16 PM
so u would say, there is a new the horrorpops album, but u wouldnt say there is a new the mars volta album?

The example he used was, "I like the Horrorpops" So if he were to say, "I'm going to buy the new Horrorpops album" That would mean the same thing. It's kind of confusing, but I get what he means depending on the context it's used in.

Yes. And?
07/03/08, 09:17 PM
Billy said it's The Smashing Pumpkins, but I prefer to say it without 'the'.

CellarGhosts
07/03/08, 09:19 PM
Oh and to add to the discussion up there; it sounds really awkward, and probably grammatically incorrect, to say "I'm going to buy the new the Smashing Pumpkins album"

In such cases, "the" has to be eliminated.

Yeah, I've never put a the in front of Alkaline Trio, it feels to me that it's the equivalent of putting an 's' at the end of Fall Out Boy.

Haha, agreed. I used to hear people do that constantly, when FOB were blowing up with From Under the Cork Tree. Every time I turned around it was "ZOMGZOMG HAVE U HERD DA FALL OUT BOYS!?!?!"

Same goes for Dropkick Murphys, alot of people put "the" before their name but technically there isn't one. I sometimes even do it myself, haha.

I know that these aren't the right way to do these but this is how I like it.

-I capitalize everything. "The," "a," "of," or any other word that's not normally capitalized is capitalized.

-I use "&" instead of "and" all the time, except when the "and" is at the beginning of the song title, ie "...And Redemption Fills The Emptiest Of Hearts."

-I also use "&" instead of "and" in all band names, even if the band intends their name to be written with an "and"

-Whenever a song has multiple parts with different subtitles for each part, I write it like this:
"Story Of A Free Man: Chapter One (The End Of Innocence)"
"The Willing Well: Part I (Fuel For The Feeding End)"
Except when there's only one part and it's called "Part __", ie "Bonus Mosh, Pt. 2" where there's only one "Bonus Mosh" by Taking Back Sunday and the "Part 2" is part of the title

-Acoustics, remixes, etc: "Chicago Is So Two Years Ago (Remix)"

-Double disc albums: "...In Defense Of The Genre (Disc 1)"

-Demos: if there's more than one demo in the same session (ie Elliott Smith has 33 Either/Or demos) then it looks like this: "Either/Or (Demo)"
But if it's just one demo then the album will be "Miscellaneous" (like most of my other acoustics/remixes) and the song title would be "Keep Your Voices Down (Demo)"

-Also, Matt Pryor's new album: the artist is "Matt Pryor" but I make the album artist "The New Amsterdams" so the album will appear grouped together with The New Amsterdams but it'll still say the artist is Matt Pryor, since there's really very little distinction between his solo stuff and The New Amsterdams

You can change the disc numbers so you don't have to do that, you know. For example, in disc 1 of In Defense Of The Genre, select all of the songs and right-click > get info, then change the disc numbers to Disc 1 of 2 and number the tracks regularly. Change the second disc to disc 2 of 2 and number the tracks regularly. Make both discs' album names the same and you'll have regularly numbered/titled discs.

I think it does just boil down to this. I find both movies very entertaining, and while I see what you mean about Hot Fuzz seeming really long (it does feel that way), I just don't really have a problem with it. Plus I just like Pegg and Frost's characters better in it, a bit.

No. Articles are not included in alphabetization, they just aren't. Nevertheless, the "A" I can kind of agree with, but all bands beginning with "The" should not be grouped together.

I can see why that could get annoying, with some aspects, but I can also see the reasoning as to bands like A Perfect Circle would show up in the "a's". I like having the number bands show up after the z's though, I think that makes it easier to find them, that's just my opinion though.
