Factor Followup Segment
Saddam Hussein's oil bribes
Iraqi newspaper Al-Mada is reporting that roughly 300 individuals from 46 countries were bribed by Saddam Hussein who used oil contracts approved by the UN oil-for-food program. Recipients of the bribes were requred to support Saddam. Bill discusses this with Congressman Chris Shays (R-CT), the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on National Security.)
anyway, this has the possiblity to be one of the biggest scandals the world has ever seen, there are questions as to who it involves, names mentioned were kofi anan (his son in particular), one of chirac's most trusted aids who admited he recieved money but claims it wasn't illegal, the UN person in charge of the program, who last year went on 60 minutes and was asked if his program was corrupt and said absolutley not and welcomed investigation...there was even possible american involvment, along with germany, russia, and china among others. this is a huge story that has recieved almost no press, and has the potential to cripple the UN, making it more uselss that it already is.
