Alkaline Trio - Agony & Irony
Record Label: Epic Records
Release Date: July 1, 2008

Agony & Irony is the sixth studio album of Chicago’s darkly loveable pop-punk group Alkaline Trio. The songs on the record contain traces of all the bands’ previous work while having a more polished feel thanks to the production of Josh Abraham. The album brings the focus back on the respective instruments of singer/guitarist Matt Skiba, singer/bassist Dan Andriano, and drummer Derek Grant, a noticeable contrast to the auxiliary instrumentation that turned some off to 2005’s Crimson.

The record begins with “Calling All Skeletons,” with Skiba belting out over handclaps and a dancey chord progression. Though the change in the Alkaline Trio’s sound is immediately evident, there’s so much to even the first track that it is undoubtedly them. Once you hear Skiba sing, “I’ve grown to love your disappearing acts / Do one more pretty please,“ you’ll realize you’re still listening to the Alkaline Trio you’ve grown to love. The first single, “Help Me,” is a perfect mix of old and new school Alkaline Trio and shows the band hasn’t forgotten how to write huge hooks and memorable lyrics. “In Vein” is the first Andriano-fronted track on the album and will remind you how well the two frontmen compliment each other.

Andriano's "Do You Wanna Know?" begins with a riff that wouldn’t be out of place on 2001’s From Here to Infirmary and contains one of the catchiest choruses the band has ever written. “Lost and Rendered” is one of the darkest and fastest songs on the record, as it contains haunting sound effects and frantic guitars. Though there are handclaps and gang vocal "heys," the song brings to mind the Alkaline Trio you’ve heard in the past. “Into the Night” closes the album and while it is a very solid (and very old school Alkaline Trio) song, it's not as satisfying as poignant album closers such as "Crawl," "Blue in the Face" and "Smoke," which respectively finished off the last three Alkaline Trio records.

The album’s production is big but isn’t cluttered with extra instrumentation like 2005's Crimson. It seems the band has gone back to their roots while simultaneously writing some of the most mature and refined songs of their career. Grant's drum work is as impressive as ever, as he always manages to come up with dynamic rhythms for the Skiba and Andriano's dark pop gems.

Agony & Irony might not be Alkaline Trio’s best album, but it showcases the growth of a veteran punk band. Within seconds of hearing Skiba and Andriano’s voices in standout tracks such as “Calling All Skeletons” and “Do You Wanna Know?,” you will realize that even with their maturity as songwriters, this is still the Alkaline Trio you first fell in love with. At this point in their careers, Skiba and Andriano are true pop-punk artists and, together with Grant, possess a sound that is undeniably theirs.

This album is fun to listen to.
Too bad I couldn't get my hands on a limited edition copy before settling for the regular package.
Highly recommended to any fan of the trio.

Without a doubt my all time favourite band.

I could not agree more with this review. I feel as though there's something in this record for the new & old fans.

If Dan Andriano wasn't in this band, I wouldn't listen to them.

He is such an integral part, it is a shame none of his songs have never been persued as singles.

I hope Love Love Kiss Kiss gets pushed as a single along with a big video

I should really give this a listen. I didn't care for Crimson, but Good Mourning had some decent songs, and their earlier stuff is top-notch, so we'll see.

They've been saying a lot about that song, I think it'll be a single. Either that or "In Vein"

How about showing some love to Derek for busting his ass yet again and continuing to be the best and most influential drummer in modern music.

Calling alkaline trio "pop-punk" just shows your ignorance. Great job. Epic.

True that. Mad props to D.Grant. His drumming skills are among the best in rock music.

um, they very much are....sorry to burst your bubble. just listen to.....Help Me, Mercy Me, Fall Victim, Stupid Kid, Bloodied Up, Steamer Trunk, Cringe, Message From Kathlene, One Hundred Stories, Emma, Fatally Yours, Keep Em Coming, Maybe I'll Catch Fire, Hell Yes, Jacked On Green Beers, etc. etc. etc.

calling them "pop-punk" doesn't mean they have to sound just like New Found Glory or All Time Low or Blink-182 or Sum 41, it just means they play punk music with pop influence, nothing wrong with that, Alkaline Trio does it better than most bands.

"The album brings the focus back on the respective instruments of singer/guitarist Matt Skiba, singer/bassist Dan Andriano, and drummer Derek Grant, a noticeable contrast to the auxiliary instrumentation that turned some off to 2005’s Crimson."

I think there's just as many effects & synth on this album as "crimson", "i found away" and "lost and rendered" especially go overboard on effects. I also find very few elements of "old school" ALK3 on this album other than "do you wanna know?" is pretty straight forward and "into the night" has a bit of a "good mourning" era feel to it, other than that, this is ALK3 V.2.0, they're in their 30's now, happy, successful, Dan has kids,, they're not the drunk/depressed early 20's guys that wrote "from here to infirmiry" and that is fine, but I'm not feeling their evolution so much.

The first half of the album is ok, the second half more or less sucks other than "into the night". "ruin it" and "lost and rendered" are filler, "live young die fast" is a cornball ballad and "love love kiss kiss" is probably the worst Andriano song I've ever heard. "into the night" is classic Trio but nothing special. "calling all skeletons" and "help me" are the obvious bright spots of the album, very catchy, but waaaay more poppy and glossy than their back cataloge. "in vein" is pretty interesting, a variation on the Trio forumula with a strong chorus. "over and out" is a bit over-wrought during the vereses but the chorus is one of the better on the ablum and if it wasn't for the rediculous synth and disco beats and effects in "i found away" it would be the best Trio song I've heard since "mercy me"...but its not. "do you wanna know" is soft and tame, but Dan sings very well on it and it has a memorable chorus.

overall, it's a 6/10 at best, probably their worst album and hardly worth the 3 year wait. as usual, Derek's drumming is off the chain but almost too complex for the music Dan and Matt write.

Alkaline Trio are pop punk, make no mistake, especially their old stuff. "help me" is pretty much just Pop...not so much punk.

based on the member ratings, most are disapointed with the creativity and lyrics. Their lyrics now pale in comparison to their back catalog, much more generic and basic now...not nearly as personal sounding and much more metaphorical.

and it does lack creativity, I think ALK3 can do better than this, especially considering the wait between Crimson and this...I was expecting to be blown away.
