View Full Version : Do I hear draft?

A senior Republican senator has said that the deteriorating security in Iraq could force the United States to reinstate the compulsory military draft, reports the AFP Worldwide news service. "There's not an American...that doesn't understand what we are engaged in today and what the prospects are for the future," Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq. "Why shouldn't we ask all of our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price?"
Sen. Hagel's argument: Restoring the draft would force "our citizens to understand the intensity and depth of challenges we face." Hagel believes compulsory military service would spread the burden more equitably among all social strata. "Those who are serving today and dying today are the middle class and lower middle class," he said. The military draft ended in the early 1970s just before the end of the Viet Nam War.
Hagel cites two reasons why the country may need a draft: The military is stretched too thin in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, the war on terrorism could last 20 years or more. In an interview with NBC's "Today," Hagel stopped short of calling for a resumption of the draft and instead urged that some sort of "mandatory national service" be considered for all citizens. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.), who is also member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told NBC that while America's standing army isn't large enough, he doesn't think a draft is necessary now.

i doubt it would pass, unless there was a serious threat from N. Korea or China, in which case i would imagine the draft would be nessesary. but there are plenty of ways out of it, so i wouldn't worry too much.

I'm not going to take responsibility for an unjust war I was against. I doubt any of those senators would be talking about responsibility if their children were in any danger of getting drafted.

the draft won't be reinstated as far as I see it. We have so much military that we aren't even using right now that they could send before they even thought about the draft. Bush wouldn't instate the draft until after the election anyways because otherwise he would not get re-elected. This is why we all need to vote for Ralph Nader...lol. We need to put an end to all this Republican and Democrat bullshit and get some guys who actually care about what they are doing for a change.

After 9/11 when draft talk was at a high what was your feelings about the draft then?
I was still against it. I refuse to give my right to decide who my enemy is to the government.

I told Ralph Nader personally not to run, all he is doing is taking away votes from John Kerry(who I met today in H-Town) and giving Bush the election.
I respect the man and his views, but he is too arrogant...look at Bush.

I'm voting for Nader. Bush is a horrible president and I do not trust John Kerry. Besides that I don't vote for lesser evils because that is what gets us presidents like Bush. I am not so naive to think that third parties are going to rise up and take elections but they will promote change. The major parties will adopt the third party policies in order to get the votes of those who are independent. This makes for better candidates in the major parties that are actually worth voting for.

I know some old man who was in vietnam...he's always saying he knows Colin Powells son and shit like that. The other day he told me they are reinstating the draft...he had secret info from the pentagon. And 1500 young men from New Jersey would be called. I thought he was crazy but maybe he isnt.

What is so diffrent between the policies of Nader and Kerry specifically?
I was speaking of third parties in general. Historically their policies have been co-opted by the major parties in order to get the independent votes.
It is true that as far as Iraq he and Kerry have similar policies but I believe Nader actually wants to help the Iraqi's instead of just trying to win an election. The thing is I trust Nader. I do not trust John Kerry. He has flip flopped on many important issues. He voted for both the Patriot Act and the war which I was adamantly against and is now speaking out against them. He even retracted the statements he made about Vietname and taking part in atrocities. He and the rest of the democrats allowed Bush to go to war and create oppressive laws and I refuse to vote for a man that allowed that.

We have like a little over 2 million people in the armed services, and we have what like 130,000 men stationed in iraq?
Dude we got soldiers in Hondura's, Iraq, Afghanistan, some in africa, korea, south america, ALL OVER THE PLACE.
It takes 4 support soldiers to keep 1 soldier fighting.
If you guys don't know anything about the military then don't speak about it. I'm in it, I know.
And all you draft dodgers.......sick sad individuals.
This country has to much freedom.

Actually he condemned both the Patriot Act and the way the war is going.

He thinks the Patriot Act should be looked at again, but he doesnt want to abolish it. He might condemn the way the war is going but he's not condeming the war itself. If he was why is his plan for Iraq pretty much the same as Bush.

So you agree with have enough soliders as it is?
No I don't think we have enough soldiers, the point of my post was we are worn very thin in our cause and we need more soldiers. All of america wants to sit around on its ass while a small population fights its wars. Think of the family's who suffer because there father is deployed for a year, comes home for 6 months, then is deployed again for a year.
Those children won't know their father. I think we need more soldiers.
It would overall help the morale of the army. We get tired of fighting just like anyone else.

think of the families who suffer and are categorised as 'collateral damage'. their father/mother/son/daughter etc will never come home, ever. those children will never know their father/mother/brother/sister etc and will forever foster within themselves anti-western/american attitudes.
i'm not doubting the sentiment of your post, just pointing out that that argument works both ways or none at all.

In 2001 I was looking into joining the military...some of the info they gave me said that no one is allowed to have braces. So I wonder if you had braces would that keep you safe from being drafted?

or just say you are a consciencous objector
You have to write an explanation of why you're an objector. It can't be because of political reasons, either. It has to be religious or moral...
Or you can do what a friend of my Dad's did during Vietnam. He received his letter saying he was being called for duty, and he sent a reply just saying "I don't understand." The government sent him a longer letter explaining what he needed to do, and again he replied with an "I don't understand." Again, the government sent an even LONGER letter, and AGAIN he sent one back saying "I don't understand." The government then sent him a 10-page letter instructing him on exactly what he had to do. Again..."I don't understand." The government then sent him a letter saying he no longer needed to join.
I hope big brother isn't watching.

i would say it should probably be an equal share, but i suppose every piece of legislation has people pressuring others to vote for or against it, so it shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary, and it shouldnt' be an excuse not to research and fully understand what it is you are voting for or against. if they are that casual about their votes, then i think we are all in trouble.
