View Full Version : The Influences Thread

People often end up discussing how different bands/artists influence other bands/artists, and I thought it would be cool to have a thread in which people can post their opinions as to who influenced who and from there we could get some decent discussion from it.

Also, it would be interesting to question whether some bands go past the 'influence' label and begin to rip off other artists musical styles; where do you think that boundary lies?

As an example, The Alchemy Index.
Obviously influenced by Radiohead, but did it go too far, and lose all traces of original creativity?

Discuss.

The only Alchemy Index disc influenced by Radiohead was Water (influenced by Kid A.)

Also this is a terrible idea for a thread as there is simply too much to discuss. You need to narrow the field a bit.

I think Radiohead gets too much credit for the Kid A style, as Kid A sounds incredibly similar to Pink Floyd to me...

Narrowing the field in the Music Forum often results in little/no discussion, the best way to invite it in is to generalize the subjects.

pretty much every current pop/punk band today is influenced by Blink-182. Examples: All Time Low, Cartel, Houstan Calls...

and I could be wrong, but I thought Blink once said they were influenced by the likes of Fugazi and Black Flag.

Anthony Green was influenced by Bjork. If they were to get it on, imagine the combined orgasmic wailing that would be coming from that bedroom. Truly epic.

A) Those bands are not pop-punk
B) I'd say Blink was more influenced by the Descendents than the Flag or Fugazi

I think it'd be cool to find the basic influence, from which all music began. It's still there somewhere, in all of our heads, but it's buried under all the tons of music tossed on our bodies everyday.

yeah i'm not sure that's possible, especially if you want the word "influence" to mean something.

drugs.
sex.
stupid governments.
religion.
the Disney Channel.

Go ahead, try to find a band that wasn't influenced by one of those. I probably wouldn't listen to them anyway.

Are you sure they don't do drugs? They always struck me as kinda druggy sounding. But yeah you're right, good band.

I came in here to say "some caveman singing and/or hitting shit influenced everything." Although they may have even been influenced by bird songs. Who knows.

I'm not sure. I'd want to say they don't, but Iceland is crazy.

Birds influencing everything sounds cool. Probably a combo of something like that with trees rustling and other natural sounds.

Iceland actually has a pretty good indie rock scene. I used to date a girl who had family there and everytime she went to visit she'd come back with a ton of new CD's. I never understood a word they were saying, but musically they were all pretty great.
