I am wondering what you guys think will happen this year. Will the US dollar stabilize, the euro get weaker, or the US dollar continue sinking and the Euro continue rising? If anyone has some good links to some information about this, I'd appreciate some links or info. I've search a little, but only came up with old stuff.

So, I am planning a trip to Europe next year(which is the reason for my question). Do you think I should switch my saved amount into Euros while I am saving? The upside is if the Euro continues to go up, the downside of course being if the US dollar goes up instead.

Um, I'd do it and switch back only if it starts going up after Bush is out of office, merely due to public perception, I don't think Bush is capable of influencing the economy in a positive way in the next year.

The US dollar died a long time ago.

I said stabilize, but I don't know why.

I wish it would, because I'll be in Europe for nine months come August.

I voted stabilize just to be different.

Why are you going to be in Europe for nine months?

Loonie ftw.

haha yes.

European banks could have more writedowns coming up. If that is the case, they won't be able to raise interest rates over there for a while which could give the dollar a chance to rebound. Even though who knows if the Fed would raise interest rates here to help curb inflation and help the dollar. Especially if the US banks are still having trouble.

anyway, loonie ftw.

the dollar is going to weaken for a while. even if we do raise interest rates, the ecb is a few steps ahead of us. i'd say switch now if you can.

there's a slight reason to believe a turnaround is on the way.

If you don't mind me asking, around what amount of cash did you drop on the trip?

I was in Europe for fourteen days from June 19-July 2. I stayed in hostels, bought a Eurail ticket, etc. The only thing I didn't do that was completely on my own was that I ate dinner with a couple of friends I know two nights in their apartment, so I saved a couple Euro a day on that. Anyway, I ended up dropping 800 Euro + plane ticket for the trip. But I was being pretty cheap.

Actually I would go ahead and exchange as much as you can. Worse case future senario is that you exchange it back to the USD when you can't buy bread with it. With the government wanting to bail out fannie and freddie there going to have to print more money and cause more inflaition. When the senate and house pass Obama's S2340 Global Poverty Act giving 845 billion dollars to the UN the dollar will spiral downward.
