View Full Version : Ambient Music
Very soft music, almost always with no vocals, great to sleep to, just kind of backround music. This doesn't mean any old instrumental music or anything. Usually electronic or acoustic. Treefingers is a great example.
I need reccomendations.

a masterpiece, r. carlos nakai is one of the greats. he was originally trained as a classical jazz saxophone player, but traded his skills in for those of his ancestry. playing the native american flute & has since crafted some of the most beautiful & pure music i've ever had the pleasure of hearing. preserving the past to benefit the future

lol @ everyone giving him post-rock and post-metal bands. All great bands, but EITS, GYBE, Red Sparowes, and Pelican are definitely NOT ambient or "background music".
Don't know if they've been mentioned yet but STARS OF THE LID... essential listening, very ambient. Listen to 'And Their Refinement of the Decline'. Also for darker/more droney stuff Sunn O)))'s 'Monoliths & Dimensions' and their collaboration album with Boris, 'Altar'.

Knive is pretty decent, though he transitioned from eerie to simply boring dark ambient on later releases. Deaf Center is definitely better. Didn't they put out a live record too? I think I might have missed that one.

This whole German electronic period, or ¨Berlin School¨ has really been ¨doing it¨ for me. This particular Tangerine Dream album and Klaus Schuzle´s Irrilicht are really impressive albums of this type of immersive and space-y ambient
Still need to listen to Popol Vuh, Harmonia, and the such
IWasaCamera

Where Popol Vuh is concerned, definitely go for In Den Garden Pharaos over Hosianna Mantra. The latter's more renowned but also far less engrossing.

this list is seriously phoenomenal. i haven't seen anybody mention troum on this site. that made me very, very happy.
i'm not too well rehearsed on ambient really but i really like maeror tri, bad sector, les joyaux de la princesse, gas, manifesto, etc. and of course brian eno...huge brian eno fan. i've always wanted to check out tangerine dream as i guess they're pretty much essential but never got around to it or knew where to start. also love stars of the lid. i'm definitely going to check out a couple others mentioned in this thread though, for sure.

Go with Rubycon, or Zeit which FullCollapse posted on the previous page. Some of Tangerine Dream's stuff -- including their most celebrated record Phaedra -- verges on cheese though.
Metavari is sweet. I suggest you check out "Studies Vol 1." It's a 17 minutes composition in which they recorded sound clips while on tour and then added music to it. It's very good, but so is the entire discography.
