I'm rebuilding my itunes library from scratch and I'm taking the oppurtunity to get some essential emo albums I haven't heard yet. I've already got Pinkerton, Relationship of Command, and Nothing Feels Good. Suggest an album or maybe a band I should get, please.

As far as Sunny Day goes, is Diary their only good album or should I get others?

Thanks for the suggestions. Been digging through the list.
Wood/Water was alright. Not as good as Nothing Feels Good though. Clarity was awesome though. I still haven't listening to the Get Up Kids disc but I downloaded it yesterday so I'll definitely be getting around to it.
OMG. How could I forget it
Saves the Day - Stay What You Are
This is a great thread. You might like Jawbox too

Ha, that album is actually on mu itunes because my little brother likes them but I've never bothered to listen beyond At Your Funeral.
Get on that.
Amazon has a lot of great lists created by users. Search for like Mineral or something, and the lists will be there. They usually cover the essentials

Read Nothing Feels Good by Andy Greenwald. It deconstructs the history of emo music. It name drops tons of bands (mostly all the bands mentioned in this thread) and a bunch of essential CDs.

I've skimmed through it a few times. Seems really nice.

I'm late, but, everything the others said about Mineral is true. The Gloria Record is pretty different and I wouldn't really consider them emo, but great nonetheless.
How about some Moss Icon? The lyrics are kinda odd at times, but I like his voice and the music is great.
And again not really emo per se, but I've seen a lot of people talk about how Zen Arcade by Husker Du was really influential on the DC scene. Whether this is true or not, and no matter how you categorize it, it's essential listening, along with the rest of their stuff.

This is a genre I know very little about. That said, I love the mid-period Dischord stuff which I guess qualifies as emo, as well as a few other records.
Shudder to Think-Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot
Jawbox-Novelty and For your Own Special Sweetheart
Dismemberment Plan-Emergency and I
Fugazi-In on the Kill Taker
Far-Water & Solutions and Tin Can with Strings to You
Drive Like Jehu-S/T and Yank Crimes

I don't know if I'd count the others, but I've always considered Jawbox and Drive Like Jehu to be emo bands. And I've always considered Shudder To Think to be awesomeness.
