Never played the original. The sequal is my second favourite game of all-time. The newer episodic games are equally badass.

Complicated = Metal Gear.
Kickass = Half-Life 2.
Realistic and engrossing = GTA.

The graphics in the first one aren't good at all compared to HL2, but just imagine it's '98 or whatever it came out and then play it. What an amazing game.

CS from beta 7.0 up until retail (and perhaps a little bit past that) was the shit.

I died a bit inside when the APC was removed.
